Plants for Bogs & Wet Areas

These plants can take wet feet and never complain making them the perfect choice for bogs and consistently moist to wet areas.

Up to 6" wide, fragrant, slightly rounded, white flower clusters arch away from their structure on semi-lax stems showing off numerous small white flowers that attract bees and butterflies. The dark green glossy foliage creates a strong contrast to the brilliant white flowers. This native Climbing Hydrangea is typically found growing where soils are consistently moist in shaded to filtered shade conditions. It is a hardy deciduous woody vine that uses a multitude of rootlets along its stems to grab onto structures for support and may be used as a groundcover as well. Only mature vertical growing stems produce the new growth that creates the early to midsummer flowering stems. A west central Louisiana selection. Item# 12066

Copper Iris

Iris fulva

Coppery colored falls and standards are overlaid with darker colored veining and lighten toward their bases and are produced in early to midsesaon on sturdy 18-24" high stalks. The red toned flowers are hummingbird pollinated where most other species of the Louisiana Iris group are pollinated by larger bees. The Copper Iris, Iris fulva, is smaller in all regards to most Louisiana Iris species and cultivars in that it produces 3-4" wide flowers with drooping petals, the rhizomes are consistently in the 3/4" diameter range, the foliage is typically less than 1" wide, and the plants top out at around 18-24" high. The Copper Iris is most commonly found in the southern half of the Mississippi River basin and along the Louisiana portion of the Red River in consistently wet to moist areas but not submerged. It has been used widely to develop red flowering crosses and is a parent of Nelson's Louisiana Iris, a.k.a. the Abbeyville Red Iris. Like the Louisiana Irises, the Copper Iris is an easy and adaptable, rhizomatous perennial with fans of medium green, narrow sword-like foliage and seems as at home near standing water as they do in average moist garden soils. Dragon Lady Crossvine

Bignonia capreolata atrosanguinea 'Dragon Lady'

Masses of deep brick red trumpet shaped flowers nearly cover up this vine in spring or early summer just in time for arriving hummingbirds. It's almost like the two coordinate it or something! The red Dragon Lady Crossvine is a vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen clinging vine(it does so via pads on the end of its tendrils and so is not destructive to brickwork and masonry) that can easily clamber up or along masonry, tree bark, fences, or other structural supports on its own. Crossvines are a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. The deep red trumpet shaped flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The foliage takes on purple and burgundy coloration throughout the cooler months when grown in full to mostly sunny conditions. Dragon Lady Crossvine is reported to be a slightly more cold hardy selection and was chosen as the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's Gold Medal Award winner in 2003. Item# 391

In summer arching spikes of showy green, flattened seed heads, reminiscent of fish hanging on a fishing pole, are produced which eventually fade to tan and remain showy until late winter or early spring. The seed heads flutter even in the slightest of breezes providing motion and interest for months. One of our most recognizable, useful, and adaptable native grasses, Inland Sea Oats, Chasmanthium latifolium, is a deciduous, small to medium-sized perennial that readily develops into a groundcover via both rhizomes and seed. Its shade and moisture tolerance lend it to use as a tallish groundcover in both full sun to lightly shaded, wet to average moist, naturalistic garden and landscape settings. The decorative seedheads are used both fresh and dried in cut flower arrangements and the foliage is utilized by the Northern Pearly-Eye, Salt and Pepper Skipper, Bell's Roadside Skipper, and the Bronzed Roadside Skipper butterflies. This rhizomatous native grass is widely distributed throughout the central and eastern US from near central and eastern Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas to Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvannia.
