Seaside Goldenrod

Solidago sempervirens

Dense spikes of golden yellow flowers cover the upper 2/3's of this plant for an extended period beginning in mid to late summer and continuing into fall. Seaside Goldenrod is a clump forming native perennial common in coastal areas whose nectar rich flowers provide a much needed food source to fall migrating Monarch butterflies along with other butterflies, bees, and many garden beneficials. Deep green smooth foliage adorns the stems. This is a salt tolerant species that is more compact in poor and salt laden soils but in rich garden soil it is known to reach 6-8' high. Pinching out the growing tips in late spring will help to create a fuller more compact plant. Provide a full to mostly sunny location but it is otherwise adaptable to a wide variety of soil types from wet clay to sand. Item# 11627

Grows To: 3-6'+H, space at about 12-18

Shamrock Dwarf Inkberry Holly

Ilex glabra 'Shamrock'

In spring, tiny greenish-white flowers are produced in the leaf axils attracting a variety of bees and those that are pollinated will produce large 3/8" diameter shiny black berries. Beyond its value to wildlife, the Shamrock Dwarf Inkberry Holly, a selection of Ilex glabra, was selected for its compact 3-4' size, its adaptability to a variety of soil and sun conditions, and for the fact that it suckers less than the species. Its main requirement is acidic soils ranging from average moist to wet. Inkberry Holly is native to all states along the eastern seaboard and the Gulf Coast. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a moist soil for optimum vigor and the densest growth habit. Caterpillar host: Holly Blue. Item# 13287

Shiryukyo Pseudata Iris

Shiryukyo Pseudata Iris is an exceptionally vigorous free flowering producing numerous flowers on sturdy 48-54"H stems in mid to late season. Shiryukyo translates to Purple Dragon's Valley.  The Pseudata Iris is hybrid of the Japanese Iris, Iris ensata, and the Yellow Flag Iris, Iris pseudocorus, combining the vigor, adaptability, and yellow pigmentation of the Yellow Flag with the elegance and refinement of the Japanese Irises. These Irises will do best in a moist to average moist, fertile soil rich in organic matter and will benefit from an organic mulch. Sinfonietta Louisiana Iris has been highly popular since its introduction and was awarded an Honorable Mention in 1990 and the Award of Garden Merit in 1992 by the American Iris Society. Louisiana Irises are easy and adaptable, rhizomatous perennials with fans of deep green sword-like foliage and seem as at home in standing water as they do in average moist garden soils. Remember that these plants do most of their growing in fall and winter and so this is when they should be fed and fall is also a great time to divide plants if desired. Smallhead Doll's Daisy

Boltonia diffusa var. diffusa

Beginning in summer and continuing until the first frost, white upward facing, small, 1/2-3/4" wide, white daisies with a prominent yellow eye are borne singly and small clusters over a long period attracting a variety of bees, smaller butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Smallhead Doll's Daisy, Boltonia diffusa var. diffusa, is a medium to tall, stoloniferous, herbaceous perennial with blueish green narrow foliage. A native of the Southeastern US, it is normally seen in or near consistently moist areas and so it will likely prefer a moist to average moist soil and can tolerate both periodic drought and flooding once fully established. It will likely grow and flower best in a moist, average to well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny location. Plants in too much shade or in overly fertile soils may flop and a late spring to early summer pruning can help to promote bushier sturdier plants if this is an issue. Smallhead Doll's Daisy may be best suited to naturalistic settings or near the back of the border. Item# 13338

Grows To: 3-4'(-6')H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

Light azure blue falls and standards are accented with darker veining and deep golden yellow bee guides. The Southern Blue Flag, Iris virginica tentatively, is a native of Louisiana but is not an actual Louisiana Iris as we had originally thought as the mother plant was shared with us without a name. We previously offered this as Light Blue Louisina Iris but it has kindly been tentatively identified for us by a Louisiana Iris grower and appears to fit the botanical descriptions. The Southern Blue Flag is just as vigorous and hardy as the Louisiana Irises and will do well under similarly moist to wet to average moist soils in a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. It can be set in water gardens where the container is just below the water's surface.
