Plants for Bogs & Wet Areas

These plants can take wet feet and never complain making them the perfect choice for bogs and consistently moist to wet areas.
 

This is the male pollinator for Finch's Gold and Warren's Red Possumhaw Hollies and so it only produces the dainty white and green flowers that attract bees and small pollinators but these plants do not set fruit. The female Possumhaw Holly, Ilex decidua, is also readily pollinated by the American Holly, Ilex opaca, and most any other native male holly that flowers at the same time as the female Possumhaws and one male can effectively pollinate several females. They do not necessarily have to planted next to one another but should be in the vicinity where the bees can transfer pollen. This is a large growing, multi-stemmed, native deciduous shrub or small tree that has few if any pests or diseases. They are quite tolerant of growing conditions from average moisture, to wet, to periodically flooded sites in full sun to partly shaded sites. Item# 12749

Mojito Elephant Ears

The large minty green elephant-ear shaped foliage is flecked, spotted, streaked and randomly splashed with dark purple to black creating a very cool tropical eye-catching effect. The Mojito Elephant Ear is a rhizomatous tropical perennial in zones 8-10 but is vigorous enough to enjoy as a summer annual in northerly climates. Elephant Ears can be grown in moist to wet fertile soils and can be lightly submerged in water gardens as well as in medium to large containers. Colocasias can be invasive in warm southern climates please plant and dispose of plant parts responsibly. Clusters of purple frilly flowers are produced atop tall sturdy stems providing late summer and fall color as well as nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. New York Ironweed, Vernonia noveboracensis, is a vigorous growing clump forming native perennial preferring moist to wet to average moist, fertile soils where it grows 5-8' high providing a tall safe platform for pollinators. This tough and easy perennial is well suited to moist naturalistic areas like meadows and prairies where it can mix with fall flowering sunflowers and asters. Ontario Aster, Bottomland Aster

Symphyotrichum ontarionis, Aster ontarionis

Beginning as early as midsummer the branching stems are cloaked in 1/2" wide white daisies with a contrasting yellow eye eventually becoming reddish. The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract mainly smaller pollinators like bees providing an important late summer source for winter stores. The Ontario Aster, Symphiotrichum ontarionis, is a native perennial that colonizes via rhizomes and grows to about 30-40"H. It is found mainly in the central US from coastal Louisiana north to Canada commonly in semi-shaded sites along stream banks, bogs, and similar consistently moist locations. Deadhead once flowering is complete to minimize reseeding if desired but songbirds may enjoy the small seeds if they are left to ripen. This species is very similar to and is often confused with other white flowered late summer and fall flowering asters. Item# 12775

Over In Gloryland Siberian Iris

Iris x 'Over In Gloryland'

Another award winning Siberian Iris from the breeding work of Robert Hollingworth, Over In Gloryland Siberian Iris produces large flowers composed of deep royal purple standards and falls with a creamy white signal or 'blaze' in midseason atop sturdy 3-4' stems. The deep green narrow foliage provides grass-like motion in the garden even when the plants are not in flower. Provide Siberian Iris with an average moist to consistently moist moderately fertile soil and they can be planted near ponds, streams, and bog gardens as well as in average moist garden and landscape settings. Plains Coreopsis, Golden Tickseed

Coreopsis tinctoria

The golden yellow petals of this Coreopsis are typically marked with red to near maroon at the base of the petals creating a nicely contrasting dark ring in the center of the flowers. Plains Coreopsis or Golden Tickseed is an annual to short-lived perennial native species with fine deep green foliage and an open airy texture to the plant overall. The flowers are borne singly and in loose clusters over an extended period with the main flowering in spring and summer but this species may be found in flower during any of the warmer months of the year. This native readily reseeds and makes a good addition to naturalized areas like meadows and prairies. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, seeds are utilized by songbirds and other fauna, and Plains Coreopsis is used as a cut flower.
