Plants for Bogs & Wet Areas

These plants can take wet feet and never complain making them the perfect choice for bogs and consistently moist to wet areas.
 

In mid to late summer and fall, large clusters of frilly deep purple nectar rich flowers are produced atop the sturdy upright 4-5' high stems. Prairie, Common, or Smooth Ironweed is a clump forming native perennial found in the central US and is common to moist soils but it performs quite well in average moist soils. The flowers of Ironweeds attract a variety of pollinators including bees and butterflies and the foliage of Ironweeds are considered a caterpillar host plant for the American Painted Lady Butterfly. Primrose Leaved Violet

Viola primulifolia var. primulifolia, V. x primulifolia

Up to 1/2" wide creamy white flowers with purple striped bee guides in their centers are produced on dainty stems held above the clean medium green foliage throughout much of spring. The Primrose Leaved Violet is an exceptionally free flowering, dainty native perennial common in moist, acid, often sandy soils along the edges of bogs, streams, and in moist deciduous woodlands. It will slowly spread by stolons and seeds and  makes a dense groundcover in containers. The flowers are bee pollinated but may be visited by smaller butterflies and other beneficials. The Primrose Leaved Violet is well suited to moist naturalistic settings like bog gardens, moist shaded areas, and stream sides. Item # 11113

The large 2" deep bluish-purple trumpets are born freely from summer to fall on upright to arching burgundy stems with deep bronzy green glossy foliage. Purple Showers Mexican Petunia is sterile and so it can spend more energy on an endless supply of beautiful purple trumpets instead of adding unwanted seedlings to the garden. Seaside Goldenrod

Solidago sempervirens

Dense spikes of golden yellow flowers cover the upper 2/3's of this plant for an extended period beginning in mid to late summer and continuing into fall. Seaside Goldenrod is a clump forming native perennial common in coastal areas whose nectar rich flowers provide a much needed food source to fall migrating Monarch butterflies along with other butterflies, bees, and many garden beneficials. Deep green smooth foliage adorns the stems. This is a salt tolerant species that is more compact in poor and salt laden soils but in rich garden soil it is known to reach 6-8' high. Pinching out the growing tips in late spring will help to create a fuller more compact plant. The huge white fruitily fragrant flowers of the Southern Magnolia can reach up to 12" across and are set against a backdrop of deep green glossy foliage in mid to late spring. Pollinated flowers are followed by cones whose fruit ripens to bright red and are often used as additions to fall and early winter bouquets, wreaths, and other types of floral arrangements. The ripe red fruit attract songbirds and small mammals. The Southern Magnolia is a moderately fast growing tree when young and typically develops into a naturally pyramidal form when young and typically develops a rounded crown at maturity. In a full to mostly sunny position limbs will often reach to ground even on mature trees and the dense thick foliage makes a nearly impenetrable mulch beneath them. Seedling trees, which these are, are somewhat variable and flowering may not begin flowering until the trees are 10-25 years of age. Item# 12030

Clusters of 6-8" wide white fragrant (may be most intensely fragrant at night) flowers composed of a frilly edged round ruffled hymen, with a yellow to greenish yellow throat, from which radiate the 6 long narrow spidery petals. The Spring Spiderlily, Hymenocallis lirosme, is a spring flowering bulbous native perennial with upright to arching medium green sword shaped foliage. It is typically found growing in areas that are wet or are consistently moist, at least during the spring and early summer when the plant is in active growth. It generally goes dormant in mid to late summer after the seeds have ripened or if it gets too dry it may go dormant early in self-defense. The Spring Spiderlily is well suited to bogs and wet areas and can also be submerged in about 2" of water and is perfectly happy growing at the pond's edge or streamside. This species is rarely offered in the nursery trade and these are large well established flowering sized bulbs growing in their own containers. Sweetbay Magnolia, White Bay

Magnolia virginiana

The Sweetbay Magnolia or White Bay is an upright to pyramidal generally small to medium-sized native tree typically found growing in baygalls as well as along small creeks and streams in nearly every state bordering the Atlantic Ocean including the Gulf Coast. In midspring, mature trees produce fragrant white flowers to about 4" across and are followed by typical Magnolia cones whose seeds turn a bright orangey-red when mature in fall and winter and are utilized by songbirds as well as other wildlife. Magnolia virginiana is sometimes used as a caterpillar host by Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Palamedes Swallowtail Butterfly, Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly, and the Sweet Bay Silk Moth .The deep blue-green to green foliage has a white reverse and can be used in the place of the unrelated Bay Leaf which is also known as Sweetbay or Laurus nobilis.
