Eastern Redbud, Redbud

Cercis canadensis var. canadensis

In late winter to early this tree literally covers up in clusters of pink-purple to red-purple pea-shaped flowers that are borne from seemingly every nook, cranny, and twig and even along much of the trunk. The flowers are followed by edible peapods (when young and tender). The Eastern Redbud is a small native deciduous tree with medium to large heart-shaped foliage and a broad spreading crown often as wide or nearly as wide as it is high. It is found naturally from central Texas and throughout the central US reaching into the New England states. Redbuds are often found with our native White Dogwoods in good quality well-drained sandy loam acidic soils. This native tree is naturally an understory tree making it shade tolerant but it will also grow quite well in full to mostly sunny sites. The abundant flowers offer nectar and pollen to a variety of large and small native bees. Item# 11618

The variegated glossy arrowhead shaped foliage has dark green veining and lighter patches in between. The Little Brown Jug plant, Hexastylis arifolia var. arifolia, is a clump forming evergreen perennial native to much of the southeastern US as far west as eastern Louisiana (where these plants originated). It is typically found in shaded, well-drained sandy loam soils. It gets its name from the interesting purple to brown jug shaped flowers that lay on the ground at the base of the plant and are produced in summer. A member of the Aristolochiaceae family, Dutchman's Pipe family, but is not a host for the Pipevine Swallowtail as far as we know. Little Brown Jugs makes a nice addition to shaded gardens and can also be enjoyed as a low maintenance container plant. Item# 11766
