Bee Plants

These plants are for the bees and are beneficial to Honeybees as well as our many native bee species like Bumblebees and Leaf Cutter Bees. Bees generally see flowers that are in the blue and green spectrum better than those in the red spectrum although they can still find red flowers via the scent of the sugary nectar. Plants that have flowers that the bees can rest on are also beneficial, as gathering nectar and pollen is and arduous and all consuming task. Plants in the Bean and Pea Family (Fabaceae), Verbena Family (Verbenaceae), and those in the Mint Family (Lamiaceae) were seemingly designed with these guys in mind. Some plants like Hollies even provide a caffiene kick! So plant these and Bee happy!

Little Red Allamanda, Dwarf Purple Allamanda

Allamanda x 'Little Red' (A. violacea x A. cathartica)

Large, 3" wide deep purplish red trumpet shaped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year to potentially year-round under warm tropical conditions. Little Red Allamanda, also offered as Cabernet, Mini Red, and Brazilian Red Wine, is considered to be a hybrid with a more compact well-branched habit and excellent flower power possibly exceeding that of both parents, A. violacea and A. cathartica, providing a seemingly endless display from mid to late spring into late fall. Dark green smooth foliage adorns the upright to arching stems on a plant that grows to about 2-3'H and may get larger with age under good conditions. Provide the Little Red Alllamanda with a full to partly sunny site in an average moist but never soggy wet, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and continuous flowering. Where not hardy it is easily overwintered in a warm sunny window as a container plant. We trialed this cultivar last summer and fell in love! It should make an excellent container specimen that is sure to add a little tropical flair to any sunny setting. Item# 12976

Grows To: 2-3'H' x 1-2' W potentially larger with age
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

Large showy horizontal spikes composed of soft primrose colored, large, pea-shaped blossoms are produced in early spring providing rich rewards to native pollinators, particularly queen bumblebees. The arching spikes sit along blue-green stems adorned with round, 3-5 foliate leaves that fade to gray as summer wanes. The black grape-like clusters of ripened seed pods offer forage to wildlife like quail and wild turkey or spread the seeds and grow more of this beautiful and long lived native perennial. Luscious® Marmalade Lantana (medium mounder, orange shades)

Lantana camara 'G12166' PP27378, CAN 5309

A vigorous, free flowering powerhouse! The large rounded flower clusters seem to transition through every shade of orange deepening as they age into marmalade and cover the neatly mound forming plants from spring until frost attracting a variety of pollinators. Luscious® Marmalade Lantana is a University of Florida certified seed sterile selection with good vigor and a neatly mounded habit that lends itself to use as a specimen container plant, in mixed company, as well as for easy summer-long color in the sunny garden and landscape. The improved vigor makes the Luscious® Lantana series a better choice as a summer annual than some of the more dwarf varieties especially where the growing season is shorter or cooler. Being sterile means that the plants can spend more energy on flowering instead of fruiting and there is little chance of it escaping in areas where this is a concern. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and continuous flowering. Images courtesy of Proven Winners©, www.provenwinners.com, all rights reserved.
