Manacá, Lady of the Night

Brunfelsia uniflora, B. manaca, B. hopeana, Franciscea uniflora

Small clusters of 2" wide white fragrant flowers open at the end of long slender tubes release their fragrance mainly at night with some fragrance maintained throughout the day as well. Peak flowering is generally in spring and summer with some flowers produced year round under warm tropical conditions. Manacá, Brunfelsia uniflora, is considered to be the most importnat Brunfelsia species used by South American shaman's and medicine men with a wide variety of uses from poison arrows, to 'dream walks', as an aphrodesiac, as well as a medicine to treat a variety of illnesses (we cannot recommend the use of this plant in any form as it can be potentially deadly). This is a naturally evergreen medium to large tropical shrub that may be planted in the garden and landscape where hardy or use it as a container plant that is overwintered indoors elsewhere. Large clusters of pure white intensely fragrant flowers are produced from spring to fall at the ends of the new growth and are held against the deep green foliage. Considered by many to beof Poet's Jasmine, Grandiflorum sports larger flower clusters than the species and flowers may be most intensely fragrant in the evening and at night and makes an excellent choice for the Moon Moth garden or plant it near a doorway where passersby can experience its heady fragrance. This is an exciting 2015 release by noted Brugmansia breeder Fred Sommer. Angel's Trumpets are fast growing tropical shrubs that act-like die-back perennials in the northern parts of their range but readily return from the roots in spring. Clusters of 6-8" wide white fragrant (may be most intensely fragrant at night) flowers composed of a frilly edged round ruffled hymen, with a yellow to greenish yellow throat, from which radiate the 6 long narrow spidery petals. The Spring Spiderlily, Hymenocallis lirosme, is a spring flowering bulbous native perennial with upright to arching medium green sword shaped foliage. It is typically found growing in areas that are wet or are consistently moist, at least during the spring and early summer when the plant is in active growth. It generally goes dormant in mid to late summer after the seeds have ripened or if it gets too dry it may go dormant early in self-defense. The Spring Spiderlily is well suited to bogs and wet areas and can also be submerged in about 2" of water and is perfectly happy growing at the pond's edge or streamside. This species is rarely offered in the nursery trade and these are large well established flowering sized bulbs growing in their own containers. The flowers of Hymenocallis or Spiderlilies are typically pollinated by hummingbird or Sphinx moths but may also be visited by butterflies. Item# 11958

Large clusters of pure white lightly fragrant flowers shine brightly against a mound of deep green glossy foliage throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. Even if it wasn't fragrant it would easily be worthy of growing for its beautiful form, foliage, and exceptional flower power. This makes a wonderful hanging basket or container specimen for a covered patio or porch and is considered to be root hardy in zone 9 at least. Provide light shade or cool filtered sunlight (although it is reported to somewhat sun tolerant) in well-drained average moist, mildly acidic soils for optimum performance. Item# 11666

Texas Gold Columbine produces bright sunny yellow flowers over an extended period from mid to late spring. The spurred flowers are visited by a variety of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and moths. The fine, fern-like soft blue green foliage provides a nice contrast with surrounding plants. Columbine are not always long lived perennials but readily reseed on bare soils. Provide this beautiful perennial to biennial with a moist, semi-shaded location for the best results. A rare or at least uncommon color form of the ever popular Blue Pea Vine producing large white blossoms held against medium green to blue green foliage on a small vine with excellent flower power.
