Moon Moth Garden Plants

Brighten up your night with these night flowering, often fragrant plants that attract the hummingbird-like moths and other night time pollinators.

The white, 4-petaled, dogwood-like flowers are produced in midspring on the arching branches and are centered by a boss of contrasting yellow stamens. The Mock Orange, a species of Philadelphus, is an heirloom, deciduous, multi-stemmed arching to rounded, suckering but non-aggressive, medium-sized shrub. Its bare winter stems provide interesting exfoliating bark in shades of deep brownish red and orange and interestingly the buds are protected and hidden beneath the bark. Unlike some spring flowering shrubs, the Mock Orange does not seem to be affected by winter chill and flowers reliably each spring even in zone 9. The Mock Orange is tolerant of some shade but tends to have the fullest densest habit and optimum flowering where it receives at least a half a day of direct sunlight and full to mostly sunny conditions are optimum. Moderately drought resistant once fully established but will look best where it receives average moisture in an average to well-drained, fertile soil. Item# 13026

Large clusters of lightly fragrant, 1 to 1-1/2" wide, 4-'petaled' white flowers often with light green accents are produced in mid to late summer attracting bees, hummingibirds, and other pollinators. The Virgin's Bower, Clematis virginiana, is a vigorous, deciduous, woody native vine climbing via tendril-like leaf petioles up to about 20' high where it has support. It is deer and rabbit resistant, is adaptable to soil types and moisture levels, as well as sunlight, although, plants grown in sun to part shade may flower more profusely. This is not to be confused with the invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis, Clematis terniflora, which has entire or smooth leaflet edges and the foliage is thick and leathery, whereas, Virgin's Bower, C. virginiana, has toothed leaflets and the foliage tends to be a darker green. Female flowers may be followed by densely 'bearded', long lasting seed heads. Note: These are seed raised plants which may have only male, only female, or both flower types on the same plant.
