Lady Vansittart Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Lady Vansittart'  

The variably colored medium sized semi-double flowers of this beauty are composed of wavy petals that can range from near white to blush pink with medium pink toward the center and seemingly random splashes, flecks, and stripes of bright red, or no red at all, that surround a boss of yellow stamens. Late Dutch Honeysuckle

Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina', L. periclymenum 'Florida'  

Deep purplish red buds open to deep pink tubular flowers with creamy white lips that fade to yellow as they age and produce a sweetly fragrant aroma which is most intense in the late afternoon and evening. The Late Dutch Honeysuckle is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner popular for its dark blue-green foliage, red to purple tinged new growth, longer flowering season, and good garden manners. The fragrant late spring flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and may be followed by clusters of brilliant red berries. Lavender Lady Passionflower, Passion vine

Passiflora x 'Lady Lavender'  

An exceptionally free flowering passionvine, Lady Lavender produces 3-4" wide, lightly fragrant flowers with purple sepals and petals that fade to near white near their base. The flowers are topped by a corona of blue filaments that fade to white and then darken to deep burgundy at their base. Lady Lavender Passionflower is a sterile Patrick Worley cultivar considered to be hardy to near 10oF. It is large and vigorous enough to cover a medium to large trellis easily in one season or it can be enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy. Camellia sasanqua 'Leslie Ann'  

The double white flowers are edged in a rich rosy pink and are produced in profusion early in the season. Leslie Ann is a vigorous upright growing evergreen shrub to small tree that makes a wonderful specimen, screen, or large hedge. Its adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions from sun to light shade as well as being more tolerant of soil types than the Camellia Japonica types, and few disease or pest problems has made this a choice landscape and garden specimen as well as a 2015 Louisiana Super Plant selection. Lord Byron Viburnum

Viburnum 'Lord Byron' (V. obovatum x V. rufidulum)  

Large flattened to slightly rounded clusters of clean white flowers are produced over a long period in late winter and early spring and attract a myriad of pollinators and other garden beneficials. Young stems are deep red to maroon and the foliage is glossy and deep dark green creating a nicely contrasting foil for the white flowers. Lord Byron Viburnum is a hybrid of our natives Viburnum obovatum and V. rufidulum and exhibits the durability and adaptability of both species with a close resemblance to V. rufidulum, the Rusty Blackhaw. Lord Byron naturally develops into a medium to large shrub and its only drawback is that it tends to produce suckers, in our experience, which may be desirable particularly in naturalistic settings. An earlier flowering and cold hardy selection of the Forsythia Sage developed by Plant Delights, Red Neck Girl boasts dark maroon red stems that contrast nicely with the 12-18" spikes of yellow tubular flowers in late summer and fall. This is a vigorous growing Salvia that can reach 7' high and wide in a single season so plan to give it plenty of space as it will tower over most other perennials in the late summer garden. Celtis pallida, C. ehrenbergiana, C. spinosa  

Dainty, nectar-rich, late winter to midspring, greenish white flowers are followed by sweet, clear orange, 3/8" diameter berries with a flavor reminiscent of cantaloupe ripen in fall. Like all of our native Hackberry species, the Spiny Hackberry, Celtis pallida or C. ehrenbergiana, is an important host plant for the Hackberry butterflies (American Snout, Cuban Snout, Empress Leilia, Dusky Emperor, Tawny Emperor, Hackberry Emperor, etc...) as well as the Red-Bordered Metalmark. The ripe fruit are devoured by a variety of birds and other wildlife. Human nibblers should be aware that the fruit does contain a large pit. The Spiny or Desert Hackberry develops into a large shrub or small tree that seems to prefer average moist soils but as the name implies it is quite drought tolerant once well-established. Texas Gold Columbine produces bright sunny yellow flowers over an extended period from mid to late spring. The spurred flowers are visited by a variety of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and moths. The fine, fern-like soft textured blue green foliage provides a nice contrast with surrounding plants. Columbine are not always long lived perennials but readily reseed on bare soils. Provide this beautiful perennial to biennial with a moist, semi-shaded location for the best results. A rare pure white form of the Queen's Wreath or Sandpaper Vine producing large drooping panicles of white calyxes and flowers that from a distance resemble white Wisteria. The flowers may be produced anytime between January and August. The medium-green leaves are textured like sandpaper. A vigorous, naturally evergreen tropical twining vine that lends itself to use on arbors, large trellises, fences, or on nearly any sturdy structure.
