Camellias - Early Season Flowering Japonicas

Large Flowered Camellia Japonicas that flower early in the season (Oct-Nov-Dec). Some, like Debutante can begin flowering as early as October while November and December are usually considered the typical early Camellia flowering season.

Sarasa Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Sarasa'

A K. Sawada 1939 introduction, Sarasa Camellia produces medium-sized semi-double pale flesh-pink flowers with contrasting dark purplish-pink flecks and stripes with a boss of gold tipped stamens against a backdrop of deep green glossy foliage. As per his 1934 watercolor record, Mr. Sawada says that this is a "very free bloomer" flowering in early to midseason (Dec-Feb). Sarasa originated from seed initially planted in 1925 that his brother had gathered and sent him from Japanese gardens. Item# 11834

Sawada's Mahogany Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Sawada's Mahogany'

An unusual Camellia discovered in the gardens of the late K. Sawada, the large mahogany red, peony form flowers have darker mahogany red overtones with occasional white tipped and flecked petals. As per Bobby Green the flower show starts in fall and lasts throughout the typical Camellia flowering season. The flowers are long lasting and are considered show quality. Item# 10845.

Large to very large pure white flowers are composed of a row of overlapping wide petals that look as though someone tucked an anemone form flower neatly in its center. Camellia japonica 'Smokey Dawn'

Smokey Dawn produces medium to deep pink, perfect form flowers that are edged in purple in cooler weather. This seemingly unknown Camellia, is very similar in all other regards to the exceptionally popular Purple Dawn (a.k.a. Mathotiana Supreme) Camellia including its ultimate size and vigor and is most likely a sport or seedling of that Camellia. Smokey Dawn came to us via Corey Stanford of Forest Hill, Louisiana in the 1980's and probably originated at his nursery. It begins flowering early in the season (December-January-February) and flowers over an extended period. Item# 11342

Light pink fading to pink at the tips, the breathtaking flowers of Willard Scott can be a true formal double to peony form all on the same plant. The flowers are on the small side but the plant is vigorous with a somewhat open habit and it flowers for an extended period beginning early in the season and lasting until late in the season.
