Tennessee Purple Coneflower

Echinacea tennesseensis  

Large dark purplish pink rays surround the green and copper tinged cone of nectar rich disk flowers in summer and interestingly the flowers always face eastward. The Tennessee Purple Coneflower is a rare species of Echinacea known only from a small area in central Tennessee around the Nashville area and was one of the very first plants to be added to the Endangered Species list but now the populations are stable enough that it has been unlisted and is a model success story for endangered plant species. A taprooted drought resistant native perennial, provide the Tennessee Purple Coneflower with a well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny site in the garden and landscape. The flowers attract a menagerie of pollinators, especially butterflies, bees, as well as hummingbirds and other garden beneficials. Torpedo is a slightly larger flowering form of Batface Cuphea which produces 1-1/2" long red tubular blooms that end with a purple bat-like face that is accented by the bright red 'ears' on a naturally mounding plant. Flowers from late spring to frost and is adored by hummingbirds. Use Torpedo Batface Cuphea in mixed containers as a spiller or filler, as specimen containers, hanging baskets, or in mass in the garden and landscape to create a bold effect. Tropical Sunset Angel's Trumpet is a heat loving and free-flowering Brugmansia well-suited to the garden in mild winter climates or as a container plant where winters are cold. Angel's Trumpets are fast growing tropical shrubs that act-like dieback perennials in the northern parts of their cold hardiness range but readily return from the roots in spring. Clusters of 3" long yellow, orange, orange-red, or red trumpets adorn this vigorous native vine throughout summer. An excellent choice for hummingbirds. Trumpet Creeper's vigor, tolerance of poor soils, and durability lend it to use in difficult sites. Use as an espalier, allow it to climb a sturdy fence, or cover an arbor. Western Sunflower, Fewleaf Sunflower

Bright golden yellow daisies top the sturdy and branched, 3-5' stems of this perennial native Sunflower. The Western Sunflower will quickly create a ground-covering colony of plants by multiplying via underground rhizomes. The spent flower stalks hold seeds for songbirds and will die back to the ground in fall but are quickly replaced by a multitude of new rosettes in winter. An easy and durable plant for naturalizing and native to much of the southeastern US. Considered to be one of the least aggressive spreading Sunflowers. Caterpillar host: Milbert's Tortoiseshells. Fragrant clusters of 1" white tubular flowers are produced in summer at the leaf axils and may be followed by 1/4" glossy black fruits. White Cestrum or Day Blooming Jasmine, Cestrum diurnum, is an upright to rounded, naturally evergreen shrub with glossy ovate foliage. Well established plants can be can be grown as a root hardy, die-back perennial in the colder portions of its range or it can be easily maintained as a medium to large container plant where it is protected from freezing temperatures.
