Scarlet Flame Passion Flower, Passionvine

Passiflora 'Scarlet Flame'

Exotic 4-5" wide glowing scarlet flowers are produced from spring to fall on a this vigorous bronze leaved passion vine. The Scarlet Flame Passion is a more vigorous hybrid of Passiflora vitifolia x V. coccinea developed by Patrick Worley and it can become quite large, reaching 25' or more in a season. Where not hardy it can be overwintered indoors with sufficient light. Click the image for more info on growing Passionvines. The red flowering Passionvines are designed for hummingbird pollination but are considered toxic to US butterfly species and so is not a suitable caterpillar host, except for the hybrid 'Lady Margaret' which is a host for the Gulf Fritillary but not for other species of Heliconian butterflies like the Zebra Longwing.Item# 11243

A hybrid bred by Myles Irvine of the UK, this Passionvine is moderately vigorous and exceptionally free flowering and is considered to be basically evergreen down to about 18oF or into zone 8B. Provide a winter mulch where marginally hardy or enjoy this free flowering, lightly fragrant vine as a container plant or annual where not hardy. Susan Brigham Passion Flower, Passionvine

Passiflora 'Susan Brigham'

Huge pendant rich magenta colored flowers dangle below the rich green smooth tri-lobed foliage of this vigorous hybrid Passion Flower from summer to fall. Susan Brigham Passionvine is a Patrick Worley hybrid in the Tacsonia group named in honor of his mother. The up to 6" wide pendant flowers sport bright yellow anthers and a tiny fringe of deep purple filaments. It flowers best in full sun but in hot summer climates it will do best where it receives shade during the heat of the day. Susan Brigham is considered to be self-pollinating by some although most sources suggest it should be cross pollinated by another member of the Tacsonia group in order to produce the large elongated banana-shaped fruit filled with seeds surrounded by tropical tasting orange flesh. As yet it has done well in full sun through our Louisiana summers. The foliage is relished by Gulf Fritillary caterpillars (and most likely by butterflies of the Longwing group as well). Item# 11624

If pollinated, the exotic white and purple flowers produce tangerine sized, large golden yellow fruit with a sweet and tangy but acidic tropical tasting orange flesh that surrounds the small seeds. Sweet Sunrise Passion Fruit is a vigorous growing selection of Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa. and the ripened fruits can be juiced or eaten fresh. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering in a well-drained fertile soil. The nectar rich flowers attract larger bees for pollination like bumblebees and carpenter bees. Two different cultivars are required for cross pollination. Item# 11812

A crown of deep sapphire blue filaments create a striking contrast with the white petals and sepals that are held against the rich green foliage throughout the growing season. The Blue Crown Passionflower is a vigorous growing tropical vine and can easily reach 20' once well-established. This is also one of the most reliably cold hardy Passionvines with foliage remaining evergreen in the mildest 8B winters but dying back to the ground in severe winters and returning readily in spring. The Blue Crown Passionflower may spread somewhat by rhizomes but it is generally much more tame than the Maypop. Cross pollination may produce tropical tasting tangy fruit that surrounds the dark seeds inside.
