Texas Superstar® Plants

The Texas Superstar® Plants are Texas tough selections made by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension horticulturists for proven performance across the state of Texas! These plants have typically been trialed at various locations throughout the state to ensure that they will be superstars when it comes to flower power and reliability. 8-14" spiked clusters of up to 40 pinkish-red ball-like buds open to yellow butterfly-like blooms, then fade to a deep orange and gold, and finally turning to a deep reddish-orange to red. This large growing shrub to tender shrub-like perennial makes a fantastic show throughout summer. Give it plenty of room and a well-drained, moderately fertile soil, preferably in full sun. Plant with caution as butterflies and hummingbirds will repeatedly attack the flowers. Item # 571.

It's hard to beat Turk's Cap for sheer flower power! From summer to fall the brilliant red flowers just keep coming. Red Hot, a.k.a. Red Spreader, is a lower growing and more spreading form of Turk's Cap with slightly larger red flowers that was selected by plantsman Greg Grant who also developed Pam Puryear's Pink, and Big Momma. Greg says that Red Hot has a more noticeable lower and spreading habit when grown in full sun. Excellent for Hummingbirds and Butterflies, especially the Sulphurs. Item# 9726.

Red Turk's Cap, Turk's Turban, Malvaviscus, Ladies' Eardrops, Scotchman's Purse, Wild Fuchsia

Malvaviscus arboreus var drummondii, M. mollis, M. arboreus, M. candida

A multitude of upward facing, sleepy, scarlet blooms are born among the soft, dark green foliage from late spring to frost. A hardy and long-lived, spreading to upright perennial, Turk's Cap is an easy to grow heirloom that will flower in sun or light shade. An excellent nectar plant for hummingbirds as well as butterflies. Resistant to browsing by deer and moderately drought resistant once well-established. The ripe fruits are readily consumed by birds and other wildlife, along with the occasional curious human. Item# 691.

Shoal Creek was selected as a Louisiana Super Plant for the spring of 2011 due to its large & richly colored spikes as well as for the fact that Vitex is an excellent low maintenance plant with a long flowering season. Texas Gold Columbine

Aquilegia 'Texas Gold'

Texas Gold Columbine produces bright sunny yellow flowers over an extended period from mid to late spring. The spurred flowers are visited by a variety of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and moths. The fine, fern-like soft blue green foliage provides a nice contrast with surrounding plants. Columbine are not always long lived perennials but readily reseed on bare soils. Provide this beautiful perennial to biennial with a moist, semi-shaded location for the best results. Texas Gold Columbine is a selection made from seedlings of Aquilegia chrysantha var. hinkleyana selected by Greg Grant. It is a Texas Superstar Selection. Item# 11388

Variegated Tapioca Plant, Cassava, Manihot

Manihot esculenta 'Variegata'

The large palmate tropical looking foliage of the Variegated Tapioca is heavily splashed with sunny yellow emanating from the center of the leaves and radiating outward and the leaves are edged in a deep bluish green. The yellow eventually matures to a creamy white and the long purplish red petioles (leaf stems) add to the color show. Tapioca makes a showy heat and sun loving vigorous tropical for the summer garden and in containers. Provide good drainage and ample sunlight for the best results. Item# 11008.
