Chocolate Eupatorium, White Snakeroot

Ageratina altissima 'Chocolate', Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate'

Dark maroon to near black stems foliage and stems make this native perennial a standout amongst its garden peers even without its starkly contrasting clusters of white late summer flowers. Chocolate Eupatorium, a cultivar of White Snakeroot and actually a species of Ageratina altissima (not Eupatorium altissimum), is a rhizomatously spreading herbaceous perennial with an upright bushy habit to about 3' high (or to 5' in rich moist soils) that is found throughout the central and eastern US. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for the deepest foliage color and optimum flowering. The flowers attracts bees, butterflies, other garden beneficials. Use Chocolate Eupatorium as a tall informal groundcover, utilize it in mixed perennial borders with other vigorous growing perennials, or as a container plant. Claire Grace Beebalm, Wild Bergamot

Monarda fistulosa 'Claire Grace'

Rounded clusters of medium purple tubular flowers are produced in late spring to early summer atop sturdy stems. The flowers attract hummingbirds and larger butterflies. Claire Grace Beebalm was selected not only for its long-lasting masses of darker purple flowers but also for its glossy green healthy foliage with good resistance to powdery mildew. This was one of the top 3 performing Monardas in trials that included over 40 cultivars at Mt. Cuba Center near Wilmington Delaware. Discovered in Mississippi by Barb and Michael Bridges of the now defunct Southern Perennials and Herbs and named for their daughter. Beebalm makes an easy and reliable addition to the garden and landscape as well as in naturalized areas. Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Purple'

The tall spikes to 3-4' high are densely covered in large lilac to purple flowers, with darker maroon spots in the throat, are borne in late spring to early summer atop the rosette large medium green textured foliage. Dalmatian Purple Foxgloves are a Fleuro Select Award winner that flowers the first year, has better branching, improved vigor, and consistent uniformity. Provide a site with good drainage in a loamy acidic soil with average moisture and moderate fertility. Foxgloves are tolerant of more sun where summer climates are cooler. Dark Knight Bluebeard, Spiraea, Caryopteris

Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Dark Knight'

Dense whorls of nectar rich, purple to dark blue-purple, tubular flowers seemingly cover up the upper most portions of the plant for weeks beginning in mid to late summer and continuing into fall. Dark Knight Bluebeard, a.k.a. Black Knight, is a vigorous and easy sunloving free-flowering clump forming shrub-like perennial that quickly develops into a dense mound of fragrant and deer resistant gray-green foliage. In zones 5-6 it tends to act more like a clump forming die-back perennial and becomes more shrub-like where winters are milder although it benefits from hard late winter or early spring pruning since it flowers on new growth. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established and prefers a sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12117

A profusion of golden orange-yellow dark eyed daisies are produced in mid to late summer and into fall atop tall sturdy stems and attract a myriad of smaller pollinators and garden beneficials. Deam's Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii, is different from Goldstrum by having a clump forming habit, slightly larger flowers, and overall taller plants with better resistance to powdery mildew. Its reliability has garnered this US native perennial the coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit. Provide Deam's Black-Eyed Susan with a full to mostly sunny site in average to well-drained soils. Dodd's Variegated Leucothoe is a stable variegated clone of our native Leucothoe axillaris that was selected not only for its coat of many colors but also for its disease resistance. Provide this low growing arching shade-loving multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a consistently moist but well-drained acidic soil in an area that receives shade during the hottest portion of the day, especially in hot summer climates. Dragon Lady Crossvine (Red)

Bignonia capreolata atrosanguinea 'Dragon Lady'

Masses of deep brick red trumpet shaped flowers nearly cover up this vine in spring or early summer just in time for arriving hummingbirds. It's almost like the two coordinate it or something! The red Dragon Lady Crossvine is a vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen clinging vine(it does so via pads on the end of its tendrils and so is not destructive to brickwork and masonry) that can easily clamber up or along masonry, tree bark, fences, or other structural supports on its own. Crossvines are a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. The deep red trumpet shaped flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The foliage takes on purple and burgundy coloration throughout the cooler months when grown in full to mostly sunny conditions. Dragon Lady Crossvine is reported to be a slightly more cold hardy selection and was chosen as the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's Gold Medal Award winner in 2003. Item# 391

Tall spikes adorned with whorls of 3/8" purple flowers edged in light lavender are produced throughout the growing season and the nectar rich flowers attract butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and even hummingbird moths. From the breeding work of the Durham twins of east Texas, Darrell and Jerrell, comes this unusual picoteed color form of Porterweed. These are vigorous well-branched herbaceous to shrub-like tropical perennials that revel in the heat and sun of summer providing a continuous display of flowers and pollinators until the first frost. The flower power of Porterweeds makes them worthy of being grown as annuals where not hardy or they can be overwintered as container plants in a warm sunny location indoors. A single 4-6' high bluish green stalk is topped by unusual, almost alien, green and yellow flowers in summer atop a low rosette of smooth succulent Aloe-like foliage. The yellow anthers resemble a slightly cupped upward facing hand and are situated below the inconspicuous female flowers that develop into rounded capsules filled with black seeds once mature. False Aloe, Manfreda virginica, is an herbaceous perennial whose foliage dies back to the caudex-like bulb in winter and then returns in spring. Even though it is a succulent, it generally flowers best under average moist conditions. Its flowers attract both bees and hummingbirds but is primarily moth pollinated making it a good choice for Moon Moth Gardens as well as in the garden, landscape, as a container plant, and in naturalistic settings.
