2020 New Plants

We are already beginning to add to our newest plants for the 2020 growing season. Expect more new Camellias, Tropical Plants, Hardy Perennials, Native Perennials, Shrubs, Vines and of course new pollinator plants to feed pollinators like butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and hummingbird moths. Galaxy White Agapanthus, Lily of the Nile

Vigorous and reliably hardy to zone 6! Large rounded clusters, to 5" across, composed of pure white trumpets are perched atop strong 3-4' sturdy stems on a tight clump forming plant with upright to arching narrow rich green foliage. Galaxy White Agapanthus has been successfully trialed for over 7 years in Zeeland, Michigan by the folks at Walter's Gardens with excellent reliability, vigor and cold hardiness. Our plants are in bud at the time of this writing, 5-25-2020, but will likely flower in summer where winters are coldest. The fragrant very large 5" wide cupped flowers, when pollinated, produce the largest fruit of any of the Passion Fruits and mature to be 5-6" wide and 8-12" long (wow!). The Giant Granadilla, Passiflora quadrangularis, is a vigorous tropical vine with winged square stems and large oval leaves. It prefers a deep, well-drained, moist to average moist, fertile soil and a full to partly sunny position. High humidity and temperatures of 60oF or more are required for fruit set and pollination. The Giant Granadilla is considered to be self-sterile and so it requires another species or a different clone (ours are clonally propagated), like Passiflora phoenicia 'Ruby Glow', for cross pollination. Glowing Magenta Kunth's Sundrop, Evening Primrose

Oenothera kunthiana 'Glowing Magenta'

The eye-catching rich magenta 4-petaled flowers open in the morning and are produced from mid to late spring through summer atop the 8-12" high mounds of dark green foliage. Glowing Magenta Kunth's Sundrops or Evening Primrose is a day flowering annual to short-lived perennial Oenothera with a mounding to trailing habit growing about as wide as high. It will perform best in a hot sunny site with a well-drained soil and is somewhat drought resistant once well-established. Glowvine, Purple Bignonia, Saritaea, Purple Funnel Vine

Bignonia magnifica, Saritaea magnifica, Arrabidaea magnifica

The clusters of purple to purplish-pink 3" wide trumpet shaped flowers with a nicely contrasting white ring surrounding the yellow throats that are lined with fine magenta lines that guide large bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the nectar and pollen reward inside. The Glowvine, Bignonia magnifica, is a highly desireable, exceptionally free flowering, naturally evergreen tropical vine with unusual pairs of oval leaflets that are centered by its grasping tendrils. Once mature, these easy to grow vigorous vines can flower continuously throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. The Glowvine (a.k.a. Glow Vine) can be trained as a shrub and overwintered indoors with regular pruning or allow it to cover fences, trellises, and arbors in tropical regions. Item# 12033

Dense arching clusters of golden yellow buds open to unusually shaped flowers that could easily resemble a dancing girl or lady in dress that sways in the lightest breeze. The Golden Dancing Ladies Ginger, Globba schomburgkii, is an easily grown tropical ginger that multiplies readily from bulbils, where they are not allowed to freeze, that are produced in the place of seeds. The foliage adds a tropical touch even when it's not in flower. Goes completely dormant in winter, even in the greenhouse, and then it reemerges in spring. Clusters of bright golden yellow upward facing daisies sit atop sturdy stems and emerge from rosettes of finely cut medium green foliage in early(8B) to midspring(6), depending on your cold hardiness zone. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Golden Groundsel is rhizomatous native perennial that readily develops into a groundcover and is tolerant of moist shaded conditions as well as in rain gardens, at the edges of ponds or other perennial water sources, or use it in naturalistic settings, roadsides, meadows and prairies. For optimum vigor this winter growing perennial prefers a consistently moist soil but can tolerate average moisture where it receives more shade. Item# 11803

In midspring this small to medium-sized evergreen shrub literally covers itself in a cloak of hundreds of multi-hued pink funnel-shaped flowers with a near white throat,rose-red outer edges, and with a nicely contrasting red flecking on the upper most petals, a.k.a. standards. Hampton Beauty Azalea is a compact densely growing rounded evergreen shrub well suited to the garden, landscape, and is small enough to enjoy as a container plant or a bonsai specimen. This has long been one of our favorites due to the immense show it puts on in the spring making it a standout among its peers. Spikes of 1" blue to purple tubular flowers that are tipped with white on the lower two petals are produced over an extended period beginning in mid to late spring into late summer if moisture is adequate. Heartleaf Skullcap, Scuttelaria ovata, is a shade-loving rhizomatous groundcovering evergreen native perennial with heart-shaped foliage that emerges a purplish red to burgundy and maintains a tinge of that coloration even at maturity. This species is widely distributed throughout much of central and eastern US and extends into both Canada and northern Mexico. Heartleaf Skullcap is tolerant of dry shade once well-established which is one of the more difficult combinations for plants to thrive in. It will be most apt to flower longest under average moisture conditions. The flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other garden beneficials. Hempleaf Vitex, Chinese Vitex

Vitex negundo var. cannabifolia, V. cannabifolia

Large dense branched pannicles to 12" x 12" are composed of multitudes of small pale purple tubular flowers are produced over an extended period through much of summer and attract a variety of pollinators including smaller shorter tongued bees like Honeybees as well as larger native bees like Bumblebees. The large palmate foliage of Hempleaf Vitex resembles that of the Hemp plant and thus the specific epithet of "cannibifolia". Like its close cousin the Chaste Tree, Vitex agnus-castus, the Hempleaf Vitex, Vitex negundo var. cannibofolia, is an easy to grow sun and heat loving deciduous shrub that prefers an average to well-drained soil. It appears to have few pests or disease issues and is unlikely to be bothered by deer. Item# 11879

Kung Fuchsia Phlox is a clump forming slowly spreading hybrid perennial with excellent disease resistance, flowering that begins 2-3 weeks earlier than the typical Garden Phlox, and with an exceptionally long flowering season. Phlox are found nowhere else but North America and their nectar rich flowers are butterfly pollinated. Small clusters of 2" long tubular red and orange flowers with a yellow throat emerge from the leaf axils on long peduncles, the stem that supports the flowers, to offer up its nectar reward to hummingbirds and larger butterflies. Under warm tropical conditions Lobelia aguana flowers nearly year round with the heaviest flowering in summer and fall. A shrubby Lobelia with long deep green narrow foliage it quickly matures into a 5'x5' specimen. Lobelia aguana hails from the Mesoamerican Cloud Forests of Central America. Maiden's Jealousy, Tristellateia australasiae, is a naturally evergreen tropical twining woody climber with rich green foliage and purplish stems on the growth. It can be grown in the ground in areas with mild winters and can also be grown as a container plant where not hardy. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum flowering. Maiden's Jealousy should be fairly tolerant of soil types as it is a component of Mangrove swamps and coastal forests in Tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. Item# 12026

Manacá, Lady of the Night

Brunfelsia uniflora, B. manaca, B. hopeana, Franciscea uniflora

Small clusters of 2" wide white fragrant flowers open at the end of long slender tubes release their fragrance mainly at night with some fragrance maintained throughout the day as well. Peak flowering is generally in spring and summer with some flowers produced year round under warm tropical conditions. Manacá, Brunfelsia uniflora, is considered to be the most importnat Brunfelsia species used by South American shaman's and medicine men with a wide variety of uses from poison arrows, to 'dream walks', as an aphrodesiac, as well as a medicine to treat a variety of illnesses (we cannot recommend the use of this plant in any form as it can be potentially deadly). This is a naturally evergreen medium to large tropical shrub that may be planted in the garden and landscape where hardy or use it as a container plant that is overwintered indoors elsewhere. Mardi Gras Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Mardi Gras' (Southern Indica hybrid)

The 2-3" wide funnel shaped flowers are deep red at their base with red flecking on the standard (uppermost petal) that spills over into the medium pink central portion of the petals and are broadly edged in a picotee of brightly contrasting white. Mardi Gras is an heirloom evergreen Indica Azalea with a somewhat compact naturally rounded spreading habit and has long been a favorite of ours for the excellent show that it puts on each spring. Dark green medium sized, medium textured rounded foliage creates a wonderful foil for the brightly contrasting flowers. Provide the Evergreen Azaleas with a moderately fertile, well-drained, acidic soil in a site that receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight for maximum flowering.
