2020 New Plants

We are already beginning to add to our newest plants for the 2020 growing season. Expect more new Camellias, Tropical Plants, Hardy Perennials, Native Perennials, Shrubs, Vines and of course new pollinator plants to feed pollinators like butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and hummingbird moths. Primrose Leaved Violet

Viola primulifolia var. primulifolia, V. x primulifolia

Up to 1/2" wide creamy white flowers with purple striped bee guides in their centers are produced on dainty stems held above the clean medium green foliage throughout much of spring. The Primrose Leaved Violet is an exceptionally free flowering, dainty native perennial common in moist, acid, often sandy soils along the edges of bogs, streams, and in moist deciduous woodlands. It will slowly spread by stolons and seeds and  makes a dense groundcover in containers. The flowers are bee pollinated but may be visited by smaller butterflies and other beneficials. The Primrose Leaved Violet is well suited to moist naturalistic settings like bog gardens, moist shaded areas, and stream sides. Item # 11113

Salvia guaranitica 'Purple & Bloom' PPAF

Large rich purple tubular flowers emerge from black calyxes and flower spikes and are produced from spring to fall on plants that are slightly more compact than Amistad. Purple & Bloom Salvia, a Salvia guaranitica hybrid, was selected for its exceptional flower power and smaller stature similar to Black & Bloom making it a good candidate for medium to large containers. Purple Glaze® Japanese Anise Tree

Illicium anisatum 'Murasaki-no-sato'

The nearly 1" wide creamy white starry spring flowers are streaked with pink and are soon followed by glossy deep purple new growth that matures to deep green. The Purple Glaze® Japanese Anise Shrub, Illicium anisatum 'Murasaki-no-sato', is a shade tolerant medium-sized to large growing evergreen shrub with a slow to medium rate of growth and naturally has an upright to rounded habit. It is somewhat resistant to short periods of drought once well-established and should be grown in a site with good drainage and average moist to moist soils in an area that receives shade during the hottest part of the day, especially in hot summer climates. Red Butterfly Ginger (Red to Orange-Red)

Hedychium deceptum, H. rubrum

The Red Butterfly Ginger produces large deep reddish orange to red flowers that emerge from a darkened flower spike atop the sturdy stems of rich green smooth tropical looking foliage. It very much resembles the White Butterfly Ginger when in flower other than the flower color but has darker foliage a more compact habit. The Red Butterfly Ginger is one of the earliest gingers to flower in our collection. Provide a semi-shaded location where it receives shade during the hottest portion of the day although it is fairly tolerant. The Red Butterfly Ginger will prefer an average moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Item# 11521

Red Sprite Dwarf Winterberry Holly

Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite' (a.k.a. 'Nana', 'Compacta', 'Macrocarpa')

Extra large, reportedly to nearly 1/2" in diameter, brilliant red berries literally cover up this dwarf and compact deciduous shrub throughout much of winter and may last into spring. Red Sprite Dwarf Winterberry Holly, a.k.a 'Nana', 'Compacta, and 'Macrocarpa', is a USDA release that won the 2010 Holly of the Year Award from the Holly Society of America. This adaptable native shrub drops its foliage early to better show of its display of colorful berries. It can be used en masse to great effect, as a low informal hedge, or as a specimen plant near the front of the garden or landscape. Red Sprite is even small enough to enjoy as a medium-sized container plant. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a moist acidic soil. Needs a male holly, of any species, for pollination that flowers at the same time. 'Southern Gentleman' and 'Apollo' are two males that are recommended. Item# 11887

Rocky Mountain Penstemon or Beardtongue, Penstemon strictus, is a long-lived, evergreen clump-forming perennial that is fairly adaptable as long as soils have excellent drainage. It is typically found in the Four Corners region of the SW US with a disjunct population in W central California. The huge white fruitily fragrant flowers of the Southern Magnolia can reach up to 12" across and are set against a backdrop of deep green glossy foliage in mid to late spring. Pollinated flowers are followed by cones whose fruit ripens to bright red and are often used as additions to fall and early winter bouquets, wreaths, and other types of floral arrangements. The ripe red fruit attract songbirds and small mammals. The Southern Magnolia is a moderately fast growing tree when young and typically develops into a naturally pyramidal form when young and typically develops a rounded crown at maturity. In a full to mostly sunny position limbs will often reach to ground even on mature trees and the dense thick foliage makes a nearly impenetrable mulch beneath them. Seedling trees, which these are, are somewhat variable and flowering may not begin flowering until the trees are 10-25 years of age. Item# 12030
