A tough and easy evergreen groundcover producing bronze new-growth that develops into contrasting creamy white and rich green variegation. Tricolor Asiatic Jasmine, a selection of Trachelospermum asiaticum, is a naturally evergreen, 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine that can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. An easy groundcovering perennial, Under the Sea Selfheal produces fat spikes of dark bracts from which tubular purplish pink flowers emerge over an extended period from late spring and through early summer providing nectar to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. This member of the mint family is easy to establish and requires little care once established in the garden as a groundcover beneath larger perennials or as a component of the meadow or prairie. Possibly one of the most strikingly variegated succulents you will find! The new growth is mostly white to cream with a narrow green line along the midvein and as the densely stacked opposite leaves mature the cream variegation slowly changes to light green. Where the plants receive direct sunlight the foliage becomes tinged with red and pink. The Variegated String of Buttons, Crassula perforata f. variegata, has a naturally dense upright to sprawling habit slowly building to 8-16" high. It is a naturally evergreen miniature shrub-like member of the Jade family from South Africa and it is reported to be hardy into zone 9. This is an easy to grow dwarf scilla or squill, tentatively Ledebouria socialis 'Violacea' as there are many similar horticultural forms within this species, is a dwarf growing, evergreen herbaceous tropical succulent that grows from a thickened above ground bulb and readily multiplies happily filling its container. This should make an easy windowsill, porch, or patio plant where it receives bright indirect sunlight or a small amount of cool early morning or filtered sunlight. Provide this easy to grow plant with a well-drained, cactus-like soil and allow the soil to become moderately dry between waterings. If it gets too dry it will wilt to let you know but it readily recovers once moisture is applied. During active growth, average moisture is preferred and it can be allowed to remain a good deal dryer when dormant. Drought tolerant once established, Wedelia revels in the heat and sun creating a dense 8-12" high mass of foliage, stems and flowers.
