Dayglow Salvia, Autumn Sage

Salvia 'Dayglow' PPAF?

Spikes of comparatively large, two-lipped tubular flowers are a brilliant dayglow pink with a contrasting small white throat and are produced from late spring or summer into fall attracting hummingbirds, larger bees, and occassional butterflies. Dayglow Salvia is new to the US in 2021, an Autumn Sage and Littleleaf Sage hybrid, with a long flowering habit, sturdy disposition and a naturally upright to rounded habit. This shrub-like perennial may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30oF. Perfectly suited for use as a low-maintenance container specimen or add it to a sunny garden or landscape for traffic stopping, summer-long color. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, average moist, fertile soils for maximum flower power. Item# 12550

The near black to dark burgundy, large, sagittate to near heart-shaped tropical foliage adorns the black to deep burgundy stems of this reverted form of the Pink Princess Philodendron. The Duchess of Burgundy Philodendron, Philodendron erubescens, is the non-variegated form of this species. It is a slow growing mounding to vine-like Philodendron and can be trained to a wooden support where its sturdy adventitious roots will attach to it. The starry soft primrose yellow, wavy edged flowers are centered by a deeper yellow star shaped throat that is tinged with orange at its edges and are produced in clusters of 3-4 atop light green sturdy stems in late winter to early spring. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis, Hippeastrum evansiae, is a rare and endangered Bolivian Amaryllis species that readily produces offsets at the tips of the fleshy roots during winter dormancy. It is from a relatively dry region and does best in soils with excellent drainage and will prefer a dry winter rest period of 6-8 weeks prior to flowering. The rounded mass of steel blue narrow sword like foliage is topped by tall spikes of dangling creamy white bell-shaped flowers are produced in spring on mature plants. Excalibur Yucca, a selection of our native Yucca filamentosa, is grown mainly for its steely blue to gray-green foliage that provides a nice contrast to nearby plants. This is a tough as nails, clump-forming, evergreen, small  native shrub that has a naturally rounded habit and even though it is fairly drought resistant it happily thrives in most well-drained soils in a full sun to partly shaded site. Adam's Needle is found throughout much of the eastern and central US and as far west as Kansas and is common component in the Longleaf Pine understory. Fire Marshall Monarda is the result of a cross between what are considered two of the best Monardas, Jacob Cline and Marshall's Delight, made by Dr. Jim Ault of Chicago Botanic Gardens and Chicagoland Grows®, Inc. and the resulting hybrid has a midsized habit with disease resistant rich green foliage. Fire Sprite Grevillea is a vigorous, naturally evergreen, subtropical shrub with deeply cut, rich green foliage suitable for use as a specimen plant or informal hedge or screen. Grevilleas need little supplemental water once well-established in the garden or landscape. It also makes an easy, low-maintenance and forgiving container specimen that can be overwintered indoors where not hardy. Grevilleas may also be utilized as cut flowers. Firecracker Digiplexis

Tall dense spikes of foxglove flowers in shades of orange are produced beginning in late spring with the show continuing into fall above the rosettes of dark green foliage. Firecracker Digiplexis, is one of the first cross-generic hybrids between the tropical Canary Island Isoplexis (now classified as a Digitalis) and Digitalis purpurea producing a vigorous exceptionally free flowering hybrid. These new longer flowering Foxgloves can be added to the garden and landscape but also make showy container specimens. The flowers are sure to draw in a variety of pollinators for the nectar rich reward. Firecracker Digiplexis is considered hardy in zone 8, in colder climates it makes a worthy annual. Five-Veined Dogwood, Xiao Lai Mu

Cornus quinquinervis, C. paucinervis

Clusters of white to yellowish white flowers seemingly cover up the plant in spring and are held against a foil of deep green foliage. Flowers are followed by clusters of black fruit. The Five-Veined Dogwood, Cornus quinquinervis, is an evergreen medium-sized shrub with a spreading upright habit growing about as wide as tall at maturity. This plant is rare in the US at present but is being trialed at SFA Gardens and as JC Ralston Arboretum at present and has shown to be a promising ornamental Dogwood with excellent disease resistance to Dogwood anthracnose. Provide the Five-Veined Dogwood with an average moist soil and full sun to partly shaded site. It is reported to be tolerant of clay and mildly alkaline soils. Item# 12243

Elegantly arching, 4-8" long spikes of 1" wide, bell-shaped, fragrant white flowers with contrasting yellow anthers are produced in spring to early summer with the warmest regions flowering earliest. The Fragrant Snowbell, Styrax obassia or S. obassis, is a highly desirable, showy small tree that is initially pyramidal in form but broadens and becomes rounded with age. The large papery, rounded to oval to near heart-shaped foliage can reach 8" long and the beautiful foliage alone makes this plant worth growing. From the moist forests of Japan and Korea, the Fragrant Snowbell will benefit from protection from strong drying winds as well as a moist to average moist, loamy, well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and an organic mulch over the root zone. Franklinia, Franklin Tree

Franklinia alatamaha

Fragrant 3" wide white flowers with a boss of bright egg-yolk yellow stamens are produced beginning in midsummer and may continue until first frost under good conditions. The rare and highly sought after Franklinia or Franklin Tree, Franklinia alatamaha, is now extinct in the wilds of Georgia where it was initially discovered growing in the Altamaha River Valley. This is a small, rounded, deciduous, single trunked tree to multi-trunked large shrub in the Camellia or Tea family, Theaceae. It can be notoriously difficult to establish and requires excellent conditions in an acidic, loamy soil rich in organic matter with average moist to moist conditions and is not tolerant of drought. An organic mulch over the root zone will be beneficial to the tree's health, establishment, and longevity. Afternoon shade is beneficial, especially in hot summer climates. Item# 12603

Fruit Cocktail Shrimp Plant

Justicia brandegeeana 'Fruit Cocktail'

The red to pinkish-red and white tubular flowers emerge from between the spikes of chartreuse bracts from spring to fall to year-round under warm tropical conditiosn. The Fruit Cocktail Shrimp Plant, one the newest selections of Justicia brandegeeana, has a naturally more compact, better branching habit than the typical Red Shrimp Plant but in all other regards it is nearly identical. It is quite tolerant of light conditions ranging from full sun to light shade but may have the densest habit in sunnier conditions. The flowers attract hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and other pollinators. Use Shrimp Plants to add color in containers, as a specimen plant or in mixed container gardens, as well as in the garden and landscape. Provide an average to well-drained, moderately fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. The super cute, 1" long, hot fuchsia colored, nodding tubular flowers are tipped in starkly contrasting bright sunny yellow and are adorned with two tiny rounded purple to red-purple ears with matching filaments emerging from the tube that are tipped in yellow pollen. Funny Face Cuphea or Cigar Plant is a hybrid selection with a compact well-branched mounding habit and excellent spring to fall flower power all the while attracting hummingbirds, bees, and the occassional butterfly. Use this adorable heat and sunloving tropical in hanging baskets, window boxes and specimen containers, in mixed container gardens as a filler or spiller, or add it to the garden and landscape. Dayglow Salvia, Autumn Sage

Salvia 'Dayglow' PPAF?

Spikes of comparatively large, two-lipped tubular flowers are a brilliant dayglow pink with a contrasting small white throat and are produced from late spring or summer into fall attracting hummingbirds, larger bees, and occassional butterflies. Dayglow Salvia is new to the US in 2021, an Autumn Sage and Littleleaf Sage hybrid, with a long flowering habit, sturdy disposition and a naturally upright to rounded habit. This shrub-like perennial may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30oF. Perfectly suited for use as a low-maintenance container specimen or add it to a sunny garden or landscape for traffic stopping, summer-long color. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, average moist, fertile soils for maximum flower power. Item# 12550
