Passiflora 'Clear Sky', P. caerulea 'Clear Sky'

Large, up to 5" wide, fragrant flowers with near white petals and sepals that are topped by a crown of contrasting deep blue filaments with a middle halo of pure white which quickly deepens to dark eggplant purple at its heart. Considered by many to be the best of the Mountain Mints, Clustered Mountain Mint produces an abundance of tiny whitish tubular blooms touched with purple or lavender in tight clusters held above the attractive bluish white bracts. The bracts are probably more showy than the flowers but the flowers attract loads of pollinators including bees and small butterflies. A broad stripe of contrasting sunny yellow runs down the center of each of the blue-green to green sword-shaped leaves creating a year round splash of color adding red, pink, and purple tinges in winter. Color Guard Yucca is a selection of the native Yucca filamentosa, or Adam's Needle, and develops into a low rounded mass of evergreen foliage on a deer, heat, and drought resistant plant eventually reaching about 2'H x 3'W. It may eventually produce small offsets colonizing the area under good conditions. This tough as nails plant makes a colorful, low-maintenance, reliable, evergreen addition to the garden and landscape and can also be used to good effect as low-maintenance and forgiving container specimens. Correll's False Dragonhead is a rare but wonderful, seemingly more refined garden species that is as vigorous as it is beautiful. The dense spikes of purplish-pink, tubular, often speckled, flowers are held atop sturdy, 3' high stems in summer. Like most other Physostegias, Correll's False Dragonhead does spread by large rhizomes even in average soils. The leaves of this species are toothed, widest in the middle, sessile, and are almost always a rich dark green. Item# 10236.

Dark Towers Penstemon, Beardtongue

Penstemon 'Dark Towers' PP20013

Deep wine-red foliage provides a wonderful foil for the tall sturdy spikes of light pink tubular flowers in late spring and early summer attracting bees, hummingbirds, and the occassional butterfly. Dark Towers Penstemon, an offspring of Penstemon digitalis, was developed by Dale Lindgren at the University of Nebraska from his original selection of Husker Red. Dark Towers has darker foliage that keeps its color better through summer and it has pink flowers versus white on Husker Red. Provide this easy to grow clump forming perennial, a nativar (a cultivar from native species), with a moist to average moist, well-drained, fertile soil in a full to mostly sunny location for optimum vigor, flowering, and for the deepest foliage colors. Large white showy, uneven length bracts, with one being 3-4" long and the other 6-7" long, flutter in the breeze creating the effect of the tree looking as though it is covered in white doves or draped with handkerchiefs are produced in spring and subtend the small flowers with red anthers. The flowers develop at the same time that the tree leafs out in spring.  A rare and highly prized specimen or shade tree, the Dove Tree or Davidia, Davidia involucrata, develops into a small to medium-sized tree with a broad conical habit and normally begins flowering at about 10 years of age. It is best grown in deep loamy soils rich in organic matter with good drainage and consistent moisture and consider providing it with afternoon shade in areas where summers are hot. Fragrant peachy orange butterfly-shaped lightly fragrant flowers are produced in large spikes in summer atop tall sturdy stems adorned with heavily variegated white and green tropical looking foliage. Dr. Moy Improved is, as the name would imply, an improved selection of 'Dr Moy', which was one of if not the first variegated Hedychiums available, with heavier streaks and splashes of clean white variegation that contrasts wonderfully with the deep green portions of the foliage. This hardy ginger is sure to add a tropical flair to any setting and unlike many variegated plants Dr. Moy Improved is tolerant of full to mostly sunny conditions if provided with a moist rich soil. A single 4-6' high bluish green stalk is topped by unusual, almost alien, green and yellow flowers in summer atop a low rosette of smooth succulent Aloe-like foliage. The yellow anthers resemble a slightly cupped upward facing hand and are situated below the inconspicuous female flowers that develop into rounded capsules filled with black seeds once mature. False Aloe, Manfreda virginica, is an herbaceous perennial whose foliage dies back to the caudex-like bulb in winter and then returns in spring. Even though it is a succulent, it generally flowers best under average moist conditions.
