Purple Spider Azalea, Koromo Shikibu Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Koromo Shikibu'  

Beautiful and unique spidery lavender flowers absolutely cover this semi-dwarf evergreen shrub in mid-spring attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A rare evergreen Azalea, Koromo Shikibu, a.k.a Purple Spider, has a compact, medium-sized growth habit, excellent durability and reliability, and its unusual flower form make this a definite conversation piece. This Azalea lines the eastern border of the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Gardens at Stephen F Austin's Mast Arboretum and is a site to see in full spring flower. Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but have good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. Ragin' Cajun Red Ruellia, Red Mexican Petunias

Ruellia elegans 'Ragin' Cajun'  

Few plants can exceed the flower power of this excellent little performer! Deep red trumpet shaped flowers are produced in small clusters atop small wispy stems from spring to frost atop the medium green fuzzy foliage. Under warm tropical conditions it flowers year-round. Ragin' Cajun Red Ruellia, a selection of Ruellia elegans made by Robbie Dupont of Dupont Nursery, Plaquemine, Louisiana, is a small branching, clump-forming, herbaceous, naturally evergreen tropical to root hardy perennial growing to about 12" x 12". It makes an easy and well-behaved filler or spiller for container gardens either in mixed company or as a container specimen as well as for gardens and landscapes. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including hummingbirds. Provide a full sun to partly sunny site in an average moist, fertile, average to well-drained soil. May reseed on exposed soils but in mulched areas this doesn't seem to be an issue. Can be utilized as a colorful mid to late-spring to fall groundcover if spaced about 9-12" apart. Item# 619

Red Bleeding Heart Vine

Clerodendrum x speciosum, C. delectum  

Large clusters of long-lasting, light lavender, mauve, to purple calyxes serve as the backdrop for the contrasting deep red, 1" wide, butterfly shaped flowers that are produced throughout the warmer months of the year, as early as midspring to about mid fall. The Red Bleeding Heart Vine, Clerodendrum x speciosum, is a naturally evergreen, heirloom, twining, tropical climber that is one of the better and more reliable flowering vines for shaded areas, although it can also take *full sun, if acclimated, where it may be even more floriferous, and it attracts butterflies and likely hummingbirds. I have always found it interesting that many of the butterfly and moth pollinated species in the genus Clerodendrum appropriately have butterfly shaped flowers. Provide the Red Bleeding Heart Vine with a moist to average moist, fertile, average to well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. This is a hybrid of the White Bleeding Heart Vine, C. thompsonae, and the Flaming Glory Bower Vine, C. splendens. Red Buckeye, Red Horse Chestnut

Aesculus pavia, A. splendens  

A tough native shrub that produces spikes of deep red tubular flowers touched with yellow that begin to open in early spring just as the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds begin to arrive. The Red Buckeye is typically a medium to large growing deciduous shrub that is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions although it will grow and flower best in full sun it is also tolerant of some shade. This tough little native begins flowering at a young age and is easy to grow and establish. Moderately drought resistant once well-established with few pests and diseases. Item# 3047

This very rare red flowered form of Chinese Hat produces red tubular blooms that emerge from the Chinese hat-like red calyxes are produced from late summer to autumn along the arching stems of this unusual shrub. An excellent late summer and fall flowering shrub-like to die-back perennial for a sunny location. Easy and begins flowering just in time for the Hummingbird migration southward. The Red Firecracker Fern produces loads of 1" showy red tubular flowers that are born in large loose clusters along the arching ferny stems throughout the warmer months of the year or nearly year round where winters are mild. Excellent for Hummingbirds! This is a durable and long-lived, clump forming perennial that requires little additional care once well-established. The Firecracker Fern has excellent heat and sun tolerance as well as moderate drought resistance once well-established. It is even listed as being suitable for xeriscaping. Firecracker Fern, Russelia equisetiformis, is listed as a Texas A&M Outstanding Coastal Plant as it has excellent resistance to soil and wind born salts, though it could use some protection from harsh, drying winds. It is also an RHS Award of Garden Merit selection. It can be used as a low informal hedge, allow it to spill over walls, enjoy it as a hanging basket, window box, or container specimen, as well as in mixed container gardens. Item# 417

Grown mainly for its large aromatic heart-shaped tropical foliage that produce a strong root beer-like fragrance when crushed along with contrasting narrow creamy white arching 'flowers' in the form of a 'spadix'. The Rootbeer Tree, Piper auritum, is a vigorous, naturally evergreen, shrub-like herbaceous tropical that can be grown as a die-back perennial into zone 8. In the garden and landscape it can spread aggressively and invasively, like some mints, via fleshy white underground rhizomes and can be difficult to eradicate once well established. It is generally easiest to contain when grown as a container plant that is not in contact with soil below it. The Rootbeer Tree is widely used as an herb in Meso-American cultures like Oaxacan.
