Chinese Parrotia

Parrotia subaequalis, Hamamelis subaequalis, Shaniodendron subaequalis

This rare and magnificent member of the Witchhazel family, Hamamelidiceae, is a close kin to the more widely grown Persian Ironwood, Parrotia persica, but offers better cold hardiness, improved heat tolerance, brilliant red long-lasting fall color, better wind resistance, excellent disease and pest resistance, and it tends to be faster growing. The Chinese Ironwood, Parrotia subaequalis, develops into a multi-trunked, naturally vase-shaped to rounded, deciduous large shrub to small tree growing to 15-30' high. The beautiful exfoliating bark in shades of green, tan, and white and on mature trunks add another season of interest while the clusters of small Witchhazel-like red winter to early spring flowers are hardly noticeable. The fall color of the Chinese Ironwood starts out maroon and deepens to an intense glowing red that lasts for weeks whether grown in sun or shade. It is considered to be drought resistant but should be provided with average moisture until well-established. Item# 12265

The spikes of ball-shaped deep red-pink buds uncurl into deep rosy pink and cream flowers that may be produced throughout the year on mature plants and are sure to attract low-flying hummingbirds and some larger bees. Coastal Gem Grevillea is a very low growing nearly ground-hugging, evergreen, subtropical shrub that tops out at about 1' high and can reach 4-5' feet across at maturity. It makes an easy choice as an evergreen groundcover in tough situations where hardy or add it to rock and xeric gardens for a long-flowering specimen plant. Coastal Gem Grevillea is one of the few US hybrids and was developed at the University of California's Santa Cruz Arboretum and has proven to be cold hardy well into zone 8. It is tolerant of full sun to part sun conditions and needs little supplemental water once well-established in the garden and landscape. Grevilleas can be maintained as container plants where not hardy and the flowers make long-lasting cutflowers. Do not use phosphorous containing fertilizers, especially in soil-less potting mixes and soils low in Iron. Franklinia, Franklin Tree

Franklinia alatamaha

Fragrant 3" wide white flowers with a boss of bright egg-yolk yellow stamens are produced beginning in midsummer and may continue until first frost under good conditions. The rare and highly sought after Franklinia or Franklin Tree, Franklinia alatamaha, is now extinct in the wilds of Georgia where it was initially discovered growing in the Altamaha River Valley. This is a small, rounded, deciduous, single trunked tree to multi-trunked large shrub in the Camellia or Tea family, Theaceae. It can be notoriously difficult to establish and requires excellent conditions in an acidic, loamy soil rich in organic matter with average moist to moist conditions and is not tolerant of drought. An organic mulch over the root zone will be beneficial to the tree's health, establishment, and longevity. Afternoon shade is beneficial, especially in hot summer climates. Item# 12603

Clusters of Viburnum-like creamy white flowers to 4" across are produced in spring and are followed by black fruit but one of the most attractive features of this unusual Dogwood is its peeling white, gray, to green bark and its neatly rounded crown. The Ghost Dogwood or Wilson's Dogwood, Cornus wilsoniniana, was discovered and introduced to western horticulture by the famed plantsman E.H. Wilson, but is unfortunately still rare in the US. The light green evergreen to deciduous foliage is glossy on its surface and has a whitish reverse and is reminiscent of the Kousa Dogwood. The fall foliage of the Ghost Dogwood can range from yellow into reds where it receives at least half of a day of direct sunlight even here in the southern US. It gets its common name from its white bark and the specific epithet is in honor of E.H. Wilson. It is considered to be a choice, single to multi-trunked, small to medium-sized street tree growing to 15-50'H, occasionally exceeding 100'H, and prefers a well-drained, average moist acidic soil. The Ghost Dogwood is tolerant of full sun to part shade and has excellent resistance to Dogwood anthracnose and powdery mildew. Item# 12244

The fragrant very large 5" wide cupped flowers, when pollinated, produce the largest fruit of any of the Passion Fruits and mature to be 5-6" wide and 8-12" long (wow!). The Giant Granadilla, Passiflora quadrangularis, is a vigorous tropical vine with winged square stems and large oval leaves. It prefers a deep, well-drained, moist to average moist, fertile soil and a full to partly sunny position. High humidity and temperatures of 60oF or more are required for fruit set and pollination. The Giant Granadilla is considered to be self-sterile and so it requires another species or a different clone (ours are clonally propagated), like Passiflora phoenicia 'Ruby Glow', for cross pollination.
