Large, 2" wide, coral to peachy pink, Camellia-like blossoms adorn this Quince in late winter and early spring. Cameo Flowering Quince, a selection of Chaenomeles x speciosa, is a tough and easy deciduous shrub with good drought tolerance and excellent resistance to leaf spot diseases that can defoliate some cultivars early in the growing season. Cut stems of Flowering Quince, with well developed flower buds that are showing color, can be cut and brought indoors as cut flowers. The stiff ferny fronds are adorned with numerous thick leathery medium to deep green leaflets often with a bronze tinge and emerge from what becomes an underground trunk. The Coontie, Zamia integrifolia (a.k.a Z. pumila), is a small tough southeastern native Cycad that eventually develops an underground trunk that will branch with age creating a dense 24-36" high cover of the soft to medium textured fronds. It is resistant to drought, tolerates high heat and humidity, sun or shade, and is a very low maintainence addition to the landscape. In areas that experience hard freezes, like zone 8, the foliage may freeze back but a new flush readily returns in spring. Makes an easy bonsai and a low maintenance container plant. Item# 12729

Coleus scuttelarioides 'UF17-52-25', Solenostemon scuttelarioides PP34041

Deep rusty red, red, to burgundy foliage with fine rounded teeth is narrowly edged in starkly contrasting yellow to neon yellow and is sure to provide a summer long splash of hot and spicy color. The colors will be only slightly muted in light shade where it leans more toward the rusty reds with a chartreuse to neon yellow edging. Copperhead Coleus won high marks in Penn State's 2021 Trial Gardens in both sun (4.79 out of 5) and shade(4.96 out of 5) containers. Images courtesy of Ball Horticulture, Inc., all rights reserved. Don's Dwarf Southern Wax Myrtle, Southern Bayberry, Candleberry

Morella cerifera 'Don's Dwarf', Myrica cerifera

Fine textured, narrow, bronze-tinged yellow-green new growth matures to deep olive green on this compact native evergreen shrub. Don's Dwarf Wax Myrtle, a selection of Myrica cerifera, a.k.a Morella cerifera, makes a tough and easy, low-maintenance low to medium-sized evergreen hedge that could easily be used to replace Boxwood, Indian Hawthorn, and even Dwarf Yaupon Holly in the garden and landscape. Its toughness lends it to use in parking lot islands. Don's Dwarf Wax Myrtle is resistant to leaf spot that plagues some Wax Myrtles, is drought resistant once fully established, and is not likely to be bothered by deer thanks to its Bayberry-like fragrance. Provide a full sun to part shade site in a fertile, average to well-drained soil for optimum growth and vigor. The only drawback is that Wax Myrtle is subsceptible to fire and so should be utilized away from houses, businesses, and other structures, although, the plants themselves generally recover from the root stock. Item# 12746

2-3" wide clusters of up to 1/2" diameter, bright white, fully double flowers are produced in early spring all along the softly arching branches just before and during the emergence of the bluish-green, soft-textured new foliage. Double Reeve's Spiraea, Spiraea cantoniensis 'Lanceata', is an heirloom shrub that has long been intermingled with the large type Indica Azaleas for a wonderful spring show. This is a medium sized, 6'x6' shrub with arching branches that when left unpruned looks like a cascading waterfall of flowers. Utilize this tough, easy, and low-maintance shrub as an informal hedge or screen, as individual specimen plants, and as mentioned among large type early flowering evergreen Azaleas. Provide this Spiraea with a full to mostly sunny site in an average to well-drained, average moist, fertile soil for optimum growth and vigor. Deer and rabbit resistant with moderate drought resistance once fully established and somewhat salt tolerant. Adaptable and listed as an Outstanding Shrub for Texas Gardens for all areas of the state by Texas A&M. Item# 12892

Double White Angel's Trumpet, Devil's Trumpet

Datura fastuosa 'Double White', D. metel

8-10" long, double, creamy white, night fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year or nearly year round when grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. The Double White Angel's Trumpet, a form of Datura metel, is often grown as an annual or short-lived shrub-like perennial and it is easy enough to save a few seed from the large capsules once they split open to grow new ones for next year. These are fast growing small to medium-sized, shrub-like, frost tender tropical plants that are easy and rewarding. Also known as Devil's Trumpet, due to the poisonous properties of this member of the Nightshade family. Provide a full sun to partly shaded site, in a well-drained, fertile soil with average moisture for optimum vigor and flowering. The large white fragrant flowers should be a great addition to a moon-moth garden. Item# 12941

Grows To: 3-4'H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

The dense whorls of Monarda-like flower clusters are composed of ½" long lavender tubular, nectar-rich flowers with the clusters being subtended by leafy bracts and multiple clusters per stem giving it the name of Downy Pagoda Mint. Flowering occurs between late spring and midsummer on sturdy stems reaching 12-24" high and, like most members of the mint family, the flowers attract short and longue tongued bees, butterflies, Syrphid flies and a variety of other pollinators. Downy Horsemint, Blephilia ciliata, is a clump forming native perennial with lightly fragrant, medium green foliage with basal leaves and shoots typically remaing evergreen. It is considered to be drought resistant once well-established and is typically found in and along dry forests in shaded to partly shaded areas in the middle portion of the central US and through the eastern US. The main consideration for Downy Horsemint is ensuring that your site has better than average drainage, they may likely prefer slightly more moisture in full sun conditions leaning to drier soils (once well-established) in partly shaded sites. Consider midday to afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Item# 11520

Grows To: 12-24(-30)"H x 12-18"W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

Another excellent native shrub for the landscape! The dense neat mound of deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Walter's Dwarf Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum 'Densa', is a compact, densly branching selection of this southeastern native. This shrub's dense habit lends it to use anywhere a small to medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. Use this tough native shrub in place of Dwarf Yaupon, Indian Hawthorne, or anywhere a medium-sized, disease resistant, low maintenance shrub or hedge is desired. Provide a full sun to part shade site in an average to well-drained soil for optimum vigor. Images shown are an example of what to expect with this cultivar but are of the common Walter's Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum.
