Sweet Pomegranate

Punica granatum 'Sweet'

One of the very sweetest and earliest ripening! The crepe-like orange-pink spring flowers are followed by large, pink to green blushed red fruit that produce pink to pink blushed, exceptionally sweet, and flavorful arils that surround medium seeds and typically ripen in late summer and early fall. Good for both juice, which is clear to light pink, and fresh eating. The Sweet Pomegranate is considered to be a semi-dwarf, multi-stemmed large, deciduous shrub to small tree typically growing to about 10' x 10'. It will fruit and flower best where it receives about 150 chill hours. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in average moist to periodically dry, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and production. The Sweet Pomegranate is self-fruitful but may produce larger fruit and larger crops with a cross-pollinator which can be any other cultivar of Pomegranate. Item# 13029

Sweet Viburnum

Viburnum odoratissimum

The light apple green new growth eventually matures to a medium matte green and in spring pyramidal clusters of small fragrant white flowers are produced at the ends of the stems attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Pollinated flowers develop into 1/4" diameter round berries that turn red and eventually ripen to black. The Sweet Viburnum, Viburnum odoratissimum, is evergreen well into zone 8 but may become deciduous in zones 6-7. This is a vigorous and large growing shrub that can be trained into a treeform or pruned into a neat but coarse-textured hedge. Its lighter green foliage makes a wonderful foil for other plants with darker green foliage and brightly colored flowers. This was one of my favorite hedges to help maintain at 4'Hx4-5'W at Judge and Lady Hall's residence in DeRidder, Louisiana when we still owned Bonny Plants. Provide a full to partly sunny site in an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil for optimum growth and vigor. Item# 12732

Tricolor Variegated Asiatic Jasmine, Japanese Star Jasmine

Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Tricolor'

A tough and easy evergreen groundcover producing bronze new-growth that develops into contrasting creamy white and rich green variegation. Tricolor Asiatic Jasmine, a selection of Trachelospermum asiaticum, is a naturally evergreen, 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine that can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. This cultivar is generally a little more vigorous and faster growing than Snow-N-Summer™ but lacks the bright pink variegation. Item# 2982

Grows To: 6-12"H and spreading, space plants about 9-12" apart
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part sun, Part shade, Light shade

Unplugged® Pink Salvia, Sage

Salvia 'Unplugged Pink' PPAF

Dense deep maroon to near black spikes of dark tubular calyxes produce contrasting 2" long bright fuchsia and pink tubular flowers beginning in spring or early summer and continuing until fall atop compact plants with rich green foliage. Unplugged® Pink Salvia, a Salvia guaranitica hybrid, has neat rounded habit that is compact enough for hanging baskets, as specimen container plants, in mixed company and sure to be a star in the garden and landscape. The summer long supply of tubular flowers attract hummingbirds and occasional larger butterflies. Provide a sunny location in an average moist, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Photos courtesy of Proven Winners, www.provenwinners.com, all rights reserved. Item# 12887

Valle Negra Fig

Ficus carica 'Valle Negra'

A cold hardy, productive fig producing medium-small, dark black to purple, pear shaped figs with a rich sweet, strawberry-like flavor and a dark red-purple flesh and an open eye. Valle Negra Fig, which translates to dark valley, is a vigorous and reliably cold hardy fig selected from a tree in the Alps of Italy in the central portion of the Camonica Valley (Val or Valle Camonica). It was discovered and introduced by an Italian botanist who was, and maybe still is, reportedly in search of good quality cold hardy figs and it appears Sergio hit the jackpot with this one. It is considered by some to be one of the better figs for the Northeastern US. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a well-drained, average moist, fertile soil for optimum vigor and fruit production. Protect young trees for the first few years especially in zones 8A and colder while they become established. Item# 12923

Variegated Shooting Star Lily, Weeping Anthericum, Saunder's Spider Plant

Chlorophytum saundersoniae 'Variegatum', Anthericum saundersoniae

Grown more for its beautifully variegated, starkly contrasting bright white and deep green, upright to slightly arching clumps of slender foliage than for the near continuous procession of starry, ½" wide white flowers produced throughout the warmer months of the year on gracefully arching stems. The iris-like flowers are reported to attract bees, butterflies, and other smaller pollinators. Variegated Shooting Star Lily, a selection of Anthericum saundersoniae but now reclassified as Chlorophytum saundersoniae, is a naturally evergreen, clump forming member of the Asparagus family and a close cousin of the popular Spider or Airplane Plant, Chlorophytum comosum. It is adaptable to both full sun to bright shade as well as to soil types although an average moist, fertile, well-drained loam or sandy loam rich in organic matter may be optimum in the garden and landscape. The Variegated Shooting Star Lily also makes an easy container plant as a specimen or as a filler in mixed combination pots and can be easily overwintered indoors near a sunny window. Item# 13064

Wabash Valley Crossvine (Yellow & Red)

Bignonia capreolata 'Wabash Valley'

Yellow trumpet shaped flowers are heavily accented by deep brick red in the throat and are produced in mass in spring to early summer with flowering coinciding with the arrival of migrating hummingbirds. The flowers have a fragrance similar to the candy Bit O' Honey that my mother often enjoyed as we were growing up. The flowers also attract larger bees and other pollinators. The Wabash Valley Crossvine, a selection of Bignonia capreolata from its northern most regions in Wabash County in southern Illinois and was selected by the late Dr. Wesley Whiteside and was introduced to the nursery trade by Ellen Hornig via Broken Arrow Nursery. It was selected at least in part for its reliable zone 6 cold hardiness. The Crossvine is a vigorous semi-evergreen, clinging native vine that produces pads at the ends of its tendrils that can attach to most surfaces without harming brickwork and masonry. These native vines make a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. Item# 13055

Another excellent native shrub for the landscape! The dense neat mound of whorled deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Walter's Whorled Class Viburnum is a medium-sized selection of the southeastern native Walter's Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum, and as its name implies, its foliage is whorled around the stem thus providing 33% more greenery as compared to non-whorled selections of this species. This shrub's dense habit lends it to use anywhere a medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. Use this tough native shrub in place of Dwarf Yaupon, Indian Hawthorne, or anywhere a medium-sized, disease resistant, low maintenance shrub or hedge is desired. Provide a full sun to part shade site in an average to well-drained soil for optimum vigor. Images shown are an example of what to expect with this cultivar but are of the common Walter's Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum. White Cemetery Iris, White Flag Iris

Iris albicans, I. x albicans, I. florentina var. albicans

In early to midspring the elegant pure white flowers composed of 3 drooping falls and 3 upright white standards are held above the upright to arching, semi-twisty blue-gray sword-like foliage adorning sturdy blue-gray stems. Makes an excellent companion for early spring daffodils and jonquils! The White Cemetery Iris, Iris albicans also I. x albicans, is so named for the fact that cemetaries as well as old home places are often the most common places to find them in the US and it was at first even thought to be native here. It was the practice of Muslim cultures, and possibly others, to adorn graves with this tough and reliable heirloom Bearded Iris where it slowly develops into a dense clump foliage and spring flowers. Provide the White Cemetery Iris with a well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny location for optimum vigor and flowering. Sold as individual plants actively growing is their own soil and container ready to plant into the garden. They can also be enjoyed as low maintenance container plants. Unusual for the Florida Flame Azalea! Whorls of deep rich rosy pink to near red, pointed, tubular buds open to display the large light to medium pink, lightly fragrant, butterfly pollinated flowers that are produced in early spring atop the still bare stems. The Yellow River Pink Florida Flame Azalea, Rhododendron austrinum typically produces flowers in shades of yellow and orange and so this is quite uncommon for this species, was discovered by Ron Miller along the banks of the Yellow River in Alabama. As is typical for the native deciduous Azaleas, this is a naturally upright to vase shaped growing plant that rounds out somewhat at maturity and the foliage and new growth begin to emerge about the time the flowering season ends. As with other Azaleas and Rhododendrons, the Yellow River Pink Azalea will need a well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter with average moisture and will benefit greatly from an organic mulch, such as pine straw, to help maintain more even moisture levels during the growing season. They can be grown in full sun under good conditions but may benefit from midday or afternoon shade to filtered shade, especially in drier conditions.
