Sweetly fragrant, 4" wide, creamy white flowers that are backed by a loose ring of arching golden sepals are produced in fall and early winter on this unusual orchid cactus with its deeply notched stems that give its name of Ric Rac or Fishbone Cactus. The fragrant flowers on long arching stems open at night may last into the day on cool cloudy days and are generally moth pollinated in their native habitat and if you are lucky enough to have pollinated flowers delicious fruit may follow. Grown mainly for its large aromatic heart-shaped tropical foliage that produce a strong root beer-like fragrance when crushed along with contrasting narrow creamy white arching 'flowers' in the form of a 'spadix'. The Rootbeer Tree, Piper auritum, is a vigorous, naturally evergreen, shrub-like herbaceous tropical that can be grown as a die-back perennial into zone 8. In the garden and landscape it can spread aggressively and invasively, like some mints, via fleshy white underground rhizomes and can be difficult to eradicate once well established. It is generally easiest to contain when grown as a container plant that is not in contact with soil below it. The Rootbeer Tree is widely used as an herb in Meso-American cultures like Oaxacan. Selfheal, Heal-All, Prunella

Prunella vulgaris

An easy groundcovering perennial, Selfheal produces dense spikes of contrasting coppery tinged green bracts from which row after row of white tubular flowers with a purple 'hood' emerge. It begins flowering in early to mid spring lasting for several weeks providing nectar to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. This member of the mint family is easy to establish and requires little care once established in the garden. Use Selfheal as a groundcover, on roadsides, as a component of the meadow, prairie and other naturalistic settings. String of Pearls

Senecio rowleyanus, Kleinia rowleyanus

An unusual and popular trailing succulent, the String of Pearls produces strings of perfectly round, pearl-sized, green to grayish green leaves that can reach 18-36" in length. This easy to grow succulent makes a beautiful small hanging basket or allow it to trail and spill from containers where it is sure to be a conversation piece. Not only is the foliage of this plant unique in form, each round leaf has a small slightly darker green narrow slit-like "epidermal window" that allows more light to enter the internal part of the leaf to help make up for the leave's overall reduced surface area, due to being round instead of flat, for photosynthesis. Provide a well-drained, cactus-like soil and allow the soil to become slightly dry between waterings. Prefers high light conditions but no direct sunlight.
