Fragrant Plants

Very fragrant, single, light to medium pink flowers are centered by a contrasting boss of gold tipped stamens atop white filaments and are produced over an extended period beginning in early season and continuing into midseason, November to February. The headily fragrant pollen laden flowers are sure to attract bees and other pollinators. Minato-No-Akebono Camellia is a C. lutchuensis hybrid with a moderate rate of growth and upright, semi-open habit and is cloaked in deep green foliage. The name translates to 'Harbor at Dawn'. Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Item# 13478

Huge, deep orange-red tubular flowers open from dark tinged calyxes and 8-12" long spikes in summer and fall, when grown as a perennial, to potentially year round under warm tropical conditions attracting hummingbirds for miles! Mole Poblano Mexican Chocolate Scarlet Sage, a selection of Salvia gesneriflora, is more compact and flowers much longer than its parent growing to about 6-7' high and wide. This giant growing Salvia, the species is reported to grow over 20' high, is a shade tolerant, herbaceous to shrub-like tender perennial Salvia that is adorned with fragrant, large heart-shaped, fuzzy, quilted foliage and is anecdotally root hardy into zone 8A. Its only real drawback is that it should be grown in a sheltered area protected from strong winds and heavy rains as the stems are subject to breakage. It can be pruned to help keep the plant shorter, stronger, and fuller. The Gardenia of the Old South, this variety is still popular with its 3-4'' wide, full double, highly fragrant flowers and the large, dark glossy green tropical looking foliage. Mystery is still one of the most popular and is one of the largest flowering of the more cold tolerant Gardenias. It is also one of the largest growing and seemingly the most vigorous Gardenia. Item# 11018

The double, tea-like, 2-3" wide roses are mainly medium pink often with few white accents and are produced throughout the warmer months of the year attracting a variety of pollinators. Old Blush Rose, classified as a China rose, is a moderately vigorous shrub rose with excellent flower power and good disease resistance that typically matures to about 6-8' x 6-8'. Its toughness and almost continuous flowering make this a good choice for garden or landscape specimens as well as hedges. The Milk and Wine Crinum is an old favorite pass-a-long plant that readily multiplies and the long-lived individual bulbs can be as large as a man's head. Medium green strap-like foliage. A rare Sweet Olive bearing large clusters of creamy orange, sweetly fragrant flower clusters in fall that can nearly hide the stems of the plants at their peak. The Orange Sweet Olive makes an easy and low maintenance addition to the garden and landscape that eventually develops into a fairly large evergreen shrub or small tree with an upright to rounded habit. These are naturally long-lived evergreens with few pest or disease problems and are adaptable to most well-drained garden soils and may be at their best in a full to mostly sunny location although they are fairly tolerant. Huge clusters of 1-1/2" tubular orange-yellow flowers are borne profusely throughout summer and fall on this vigorous shrub-like perennial and attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The flowers are sweetly fragrant at night and likely attract hummingbird moths. Orange Zest Cestrum becomes large and shrub like in mild winter climates whereas in the coldest portions of its range, like zone 8B, it will often freeze to the ground and return in spring. The bright deep pink flushes of holly-like new foliage and stems slowly matures to pastel pink, yellow, and ultimately a dark green. Party Lights™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive is one of the hardiest selections of Osmanthus and produces small white fragrant flowers in fall but it is mainly grown for its outstanding foliage color in the garden and landscape and has a nice dense well-branching habit that is sure to make a statement. This is a hardy evergreen shrub that will have the densest habit and brightest colors in full to mostly sunny conditions. Dense clusters of sweetly fragrant, small white flowers seemingly cover the stems completely in late fall on the upper 1/3 to 1/2 of the plant for an extended period and may attract bees and occasional butterflies on warmer days. Rosea is an uncommon selection of the Five-Leaf Akebia sporting spicily scented, pink to lavender flowers which open as the foliage emerges in early spring. A vigorous, twining semi-evergreen vine that is adaptable to a variety of site conditions and is pest and disease resistant. The flowers may be followed by 3-4" long purplish fruit. For the best fruit production it is best to plant two different varieties or seedlings and some recommend hand pollination to ensure fruit set. Item# 9046

This a very easy and strong-growing, perennial vine with beautiful glossy leaves, exotic white and purple flowers, which are followed by large purple, rounded fruit, about the size of tangerines, with a nice flavor. Clusters of 2" wide primrose yellow fragrant 4-petalled flowers are produced in mid to late spring into early summer atop the low growing spreading stems adorned with deep green fuzzy foliage of this native perennial wildflower. Prairie Sundrops, a.k.a. Meadow Evening Primrose, is a dayflowering species of Evening Primrose with a low somewhat bushy habit and it does spread somewhat by rhizomes which is great for naturalistic settings like meadows, prairies and roadside plantings and it is reportedly relatively easy to control in garden settings as well. An adaptable native perennial that is tolerant of wet to dry soils including clay but it seems to prefer an acidic pH. The flowers attract butterflies and larger native bees. Item# 11662

Masses of lightly fragrant, white, double starry flowers accented with a touch of rose pink on the outer petals are produced in mid to late spring to early summer nearly covering up this easy to grow heirloom. The Pride of Rochester Fuzzy Deutzia, a selection of Deutzia scabra or sometimes D. crenata, is an easy to grow and low maitenance medium to large growing deciduous shrub with a fountaining habit growing to about 6-10' high and wide. It gets nice yellow fall color even here in the southern US and has reddish to orange exfoliating bark adding to its interest in winter.
