Fragrant Plants

The sweetly fragrant clusters of flowers open purple (yesterday), fade through lavender (today), and finally to pure white (tomorrow) creating a beautiful multi-colored effect on this popular tropical to subtropical naturally evergreen shrub. Flowering occurs in late winter and spring and they are pollinated by butterflies. The Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow can be enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy or in the ground in mild winter regions. It prefers mildly acidic, moderately fertile, average moist soils and cool sunlight to filtered shade. Item# 11168

White petals alternate with lavender sepals that are topped by a wide corona of frilly white filaments that darken to purple. Frederick Passion Fruit is self-pollinating and the flowers are followed by large purple fruit with a sweet tangy flavor once fully ripe that can be eaten fresh or juiced. This is also considered to be one of the most reliably cold hardy Passionfruit varieties surviving well into zone 9. A vigorous dense and free flowering selection. An exceptionally cold hardy Gardenia, Frostproof puts on a show of wonderfully fragrant, 2" wide, white flowers in late spring with some flowers throughout summer on well-established plants. Large white trumpets heavily edged in a deep rich pink skirt, hang in loose clusters from this large tropical shrub. Angel's Trumpets are fast growing tropical shrubs that act-like die-back perennials in the northern parts of their range but readily return from the roots in spring. 1 of only 5 Monardas to be selected as an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, 1 of the top 10 in Mt. Cuba Center's 2014-2016 Monarda trials, and in the top 10 in trials at the Chicago Botanic Gardens in 1998! The extra large, 3-4" wide, clusters of 2" long, deep red tubular flowers are produced over an extended period beginning in late spring to midsummer, depending on your zone. Earlier in warmer climates and later in colder climates. Gardenview Scarlet Monarda or Beebalm, a hybrid selection of native US species, it is similar in many regards to Jacob Cline, still one of the most popular red cultivars, but has improved resistance to powdery mildew and a slightly more compact habit topping out at 3' high. An unusual plant rarely found for sale in the US, Giant Blue African Salvia produces spikes, up to 16" high, of blue to purple, up to 2" long, hooded, two-lipped, tubular, lightly fragrant flowers throughout the warmer months of the year with the heaviest flowering in spring and late summer and fall. A vigorous tender herbaceous plant with very large tropical foliage and square stems that can easily reach 6-9' high and may grow to 15' high becoming tree-like in its native habitat. Item# 10703.

The fragrant very large 5" wide cupped flowers, when pollinated, produce the largest fruit of any of the Passion Fruits and mature to be 5-6" wide and 8-12" long (wow!). The Giant Granadilla, Passiflora quadrangularis, is a vigorous tropical vine with winged square stems and large oval leaves. It prefers a deep, well-drained, moist to average moist, fertile soil and a full to partly sunny position. High humidity and temperatures of 60^oF or more are required for fruit set and pollination. The Giant Granadilla is considered to be self-sterile and so it requires another species or a different clone (ours are clonally propagated), like Passiflora phoenicia 'Ruby Glow', for cross pollination. Upward facing strongly fragrant, up to 2" wide, creamy white, pinwheel-like flowers are held on 4-6" long slender tubes and quickly change to golden yellow and then to pumpkin orange. Rich deep green glossy foliage on a vigorous growing evergreen shrub but is certainly amenable to light pruning and shaping. This rare tropical Gardenia is sure to be a conversation piece. Large, double to triple flowered or more, intensely fragrant, long lasting flowers open a soft primrose yellow and age to a golden yellow to near orange. Goldflame's rich perfume lasts into the morning and is sure to turn heads and attract the local hummingbird moth population! It begins flowering at 4-5' high making it well adapted to container culture. Large drooping panicles of fragrant fleecy-white flowers adorn this small, native tree in spring and are followed by clusters of tiny black olive-like fruit in summer and fall and are great for birds. The Grancy Graybeard is a tough and adaptable small deciduous tree with a medium rate of growth that is makes an excellent understory tree, specimen, or in mixed natural landscapes. Enormous conicle lavender clusters, to 4" wide and 12-14" long, composed of tiny fragrant nectar rich flowers adorn the weeping stems of this fountaining Butterfly Bush in summer and fall. Medium-sized fragrant double medium pink roses are produced throughout the growing season on this vigorous and disease resistant 'found rose' discovered and introduced by Barbara Worl. Grandmother's Hat Rose, and it has several other names which is often typical of roses that are highly regarded, is vigorous enough to be trained into a 12'H climber or it can also be maintained as a large shrub rose by heading back the larger growing canes. White lightly fragrant frilly witch hazel-like flowers nearly cover the backdrop of medium-sized oval dark olive green foliage in spring. Green Giant Loropetalum is a vigorous large evergreen shrub with a naturally rounded upright form and is well suited for use as a screen, hedge, or specimen plant. A relatively unknown heirloom shrub until the purple foliaged forms came on the scene in the 1980's and 1990's, Chinese Witch Hazel has few pests or disease problems when grown in a well-drained, acidic to neutral soil with average fertility in a full sun to partly shaded site.
