Starfish Cactus, Zulu Giant, Carrion Flower

Stapelia gigantea, S. nobilis, Orbea variegata  

The 4-angled, slightly fuzzy, mainly upright, deep olive green succulent stems produce 10" wide star-fish shaped, light creamy yellow flowers that are heavily overlaid with burgundy. The flowers are meant to attract Bot Flies for pollination with a fragrance of rotting meat and so the aroma is 'unforgettable'. The Starfish Cactus, Stapelia gigantea, is an easily grown, low-maintenance, densely branching cactus-like succulent that quickly develops into a mass of upright to trailing stems growing to about 8" high. During the warmer months of the year, once nighttime temperatures remain above about 55oF and daytime temperatures are above 75oF the Starfish Cactus can be enjoyed outdoors. It also makes an easy indoor plant for a windowsill provided it receives some direct sunlight to high indirect sunlight at a minimum. The Strawberry Fig produces large crops of medium to large dark green rounded to flattened fruit that may be blushed with purple and has a medium, open eye. The flesh is white with a dark purple pulp of excellent flavor and the fruit can be eaten fresh, dried, or preserved. The Prairieblues™ Baptisias were selected not only for their unique colors but also for their extra large flower spikes, durability, and vigor. Taiwanese Akebia, Chocolate Vine

Long drooping clusters of showy, fragrant deep maroon red female and male flowers are produced in late spring and over a long period on this somewhat tame twining woody vine. Pollinated flowers are followed by bright blue fruit similar to Akebia quinata or the Five-Leaf Akebia. The foliage of the Taiwan Akebia is a little thicker and is generally tardily deciduous but may remain nearly evergreen in the warmer parts of its cold hardiness range. A little less vigorous than the Five-Leaf Akebia making it a suitable candidate for medium sized trellises or allow it to twine along or through a fence. Rare and unusual. Item# 11546

The Tennessee Purple Coneflower is a rare species of Echinacea known only from a small area in central Tennessee around the Nashville area and was one of the very first plants to be added to the Endangered Species list but now the populations are stable enough that it has been unlisted and is a model success story for endangered plant species. An exceptionally rare species found only in 4 Texas counties, Texan Trailing Phlox is a low growing groundhugging perennial that produces clusters of deep fuchsia pink Thrift-like flowers held above the low trailing stems that are densely covered in short needle-like deep green foliage. The flowers attract butterflies large and small alike. This evergreen native perennial needs excellent drainage and is typically found growing on sandy pimple mounds. It can be used as a groundcover in the garden and landscape where soils have excellent drainage. Texan Trailing Phlox, Phlox nivalis ssp. texensis, also makes an easy and forgiving container plant with stems that can trail to 12" or more.
