Dancing Wind Big Bluestem, Turkey Foot Grass

Andropogon gerardii 'Dancing Wind'  PP26892

The spring and summer clumps of yellow-green foliage are accented with and tipped with red and in late summer tall, 4-1/2-5-1/2' high, sturdy spikes of decorative reddish seed heads are produced. As fall approaches the foliage becomes red and then deepens into fiery scarlet. Dancing Wind Big Bluestem, a selection of Andropogon gerardii, has a slightly shorter, sturdier upright habit than the species with excellent fall color. The species is native throughout much of the eastern 2/3's of the US and is a clumping to slowly spreading rhizomatous grass whose seeds are utilized by a number of seed eating birds. Provide a full to mostly sunny site with an average to well-drained, acidic soil for the deepest foliage colors and optimum vigor. Plants are in their best form when grown in a low fertility soil. Dark Knight Bluebeard, Spiraea, Caryopteris

Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Dark Knight'

Dense whorls of nectar rich, purple to dark blue-purple, tubular flowers seemingly cover up the upper most portions of the plant for weeks beginning in mid to late summer and continuing into fall. Dark Knight Bluebeard, a.k.a. Black Knight, is a vigorous and easy sunloving free-flowering clump forming shrub-like perennial that quickly develops into a dense mound of fragrant and deer resistant gray-green foliage. In zones 5-6 it tends to act more like a clump forming die-back perennial and becomes more shrub-like where winters are milder although it benefits from hard late winter or early spring pruning since it flowers on new growth. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established and prefers a sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12117

Grows To: 2-3'H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny

A profusion of golden orange-yellow dark eyed daisies are produced in mid to late summer and into fall atop tall sturdy stems and attract a myriad of smaller pollinators and garden beneficials. Deam's Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii, is different from Goldstrum by having a clump forming habit, slightly larger flowers, and overall taller plants with better resistance to powdery mildew. Its reliability has garnered this US native perennial the coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit. Provide Deam's Black-Eyed Susan with a full to mostly sunny site in average to well-drained soils. Songbirds enjoy the ripe seed heads and it may reseed under good conditions on exposed soils making it a good addition to cottage gardens, meadows, prairies, and other naturalistic and informal settings. DECADENCE® Cherries Jubilee Baptisia, False Indigo

Baptisia 'Cherries Jubilee'  PP23907 CPBR5332

"An unusually beautiful and unique flower color as well as densely branched foliage set this new variety apart. Deep maroon buds open to bicolor maroon and yellow flowers held on strong scapes above the blue-green foliage in late spring to early summer. Secondary branching on the flower stems makes this variety especially floriferous. As the flowers age, they turn gold." - Walter's Gardens, Inc. DECADENCE® Cherries Jubilee Baptisia, a hybrid cultivar of our native species (a.k.a. nativar), has a slightly more compact habit than the others in this series as well as foliage that lasts through summer. Double White Serissa, Snowrose, Tree of a Thousand Stars, or Japanese Boxthorn

Serissa japonica 'Flore Pleno', S. foetida, Buchozia japonica

1/2" wide, pure white, double flowers almost resemble tiny white roses and the flowers shine against the foil of very dark green, small, ovate, fine textured foliage. The heaviest flowering typically occurs spring and may produce flowers sporadically into fall under good conditions. The Double White Serissa, Serissa foetida 'Flore Pleno', is a dwarf, naturally evergreen shrub with small fine-textured deep green glossy ovate leaves and a naturally mounding, semi-open habit and plants rarely exceed about 2'H x 2'W at maturity. In the past it has been used as a substitute for boxwood especially when a low clipped hedge was desired. The dense whorls of Monarda-like flower clusters are composed of ½" long lavender tubular, nectar-rich flowers with the clusters being subtended by leafy bracts and multiple clusters per stem giving it the name of Downy Pagoda Mint. Flowering occurs between late spring and midsummer on sturdy stems reaching 12-24" high and, like most members of the mint family, the flowers attract short and longue tongued bees, butterflies, Syrphid flies and a variety of other pollinators. Downy Horsemint, Blephilia ciliata, is a clump forming native perennial with lightly fragrant, medium green foliage with basal leaves and shoots typically remaing evergreen. It is considered to be drought resistant once well-established and is typically found in and along dry forests in shaded to partly shaded areas in the middle portion of the central US and through the eastern US. The main consideration for Downy Horsemint is ensuring that your site has better than average drainage, they may likely prefer slightly more moisture in full sun conditions leaning to drier soils (once well-established) in partly shaded sites. Consider midday to afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Item# 11520

Dr. Monticello's Fig

Ficus carica 'Dr. Monticello' fig

This is a large to very large purple fig with good flavor. An heirloom fig that was brought to the US from Italy via Dr. Sam Monticello's grandmother. The soon to be Mrs. Decarlo was a 16 years old bride and on her way to meet her new husband. She wrapped the cuttings in newspaper to get them here as she traveled to the new world aboard ship. Dr. Monticello, a Lake Charles Master Gardener and retired physician, says that they have been grown in this area from the time his grandmother arrived here as well as in Kansas where part of their family migrated to. Caterpillar host: Ruddy Daggerwing.

We have tasted them off our young trees, and this is the only one, so far, that we think is tastier than Celeste!  Seems to have a richer flavor! Item# 11226.

Dragon Lady Crossvine

Bignonia capreolata atrosanguinea 'Dragon Lady'

Masses of deep brick red trumpet shaped flowers nearly cover up this vine in spring or early summer just in time for arriving hummingbirds. It's almost like the two coordinate it or something! The red Dragon Lady Crossvine is a vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen clinging vine(it does so via pads on the end of its tendrils and so is not destructive to brickwork and masonry) that can easily clamber up or along masonry, tree bark, fences, or other structural supports on its own. Crossvines are a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. The deep red trumpet shaped flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The foliage takes on purple and burgundy coloration throughout the cooler months when grown in full to mostly sunny conditions. Dragon Lady Crossvine is reported to be a slightly more cold hardy selection and was chosen as the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's Gold Medal Award winner in 2003. Item# 391
