Perennials - All

Our wide selection of tried and true perennial plants will bring reliable color and interest to your garden for years to come. Most perennials will only get bigger and better as time passes and many will flower from spring to fall as well as attracting butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators to your gardens. Did you know that native perennials like Rudbeckias, Liatris, and Phlox are found only in North America?

The silvery grass-like foliage of Narrowleaf Silk Grass could fool anyone to thinking it might actually be a grass but by late summer and fall you can be sure that this is definitely in the aster family when it puts up sturdy branching stems that are topped by loose clusters of nearly 1" wide golden yellow daisies. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including butterflies and late season native bees storing up for winter. Narrowleaf Silk Grass, Pityopsis graminifolia, is a rhizomatous but non-aggressive, generally evergreen, native perennial found throughout the Southeastern US from near central Texas to Virginia and as far north as Kentucky and into southern Ohio. It makes a drought and deer and rabbit resistant informal ground cover or lawn replacement or allow it to naturalize along roadsides, meadows, and prairies or other naturalistic settings. Its main requirement is average or better drainage and a full sun to partly shaded site with average moisture. May reseed but generally only on exposed or disturbed soils. Item# 10686

Nuttall's Wild Indigo

Baptisia nuttalliana

Soft primrose yellow pea-shaped flowers adorn the tips of the plants singly and in small clusters in early to midspring providing important nectar and pollen to Bumblebees. Nuttall's Wild Indigo, Baptisia nuttalliana, is a long-lived, taprooted, herbaceous perennial that develops into a neat, naturally rounded, shrub-like form cloaked in olive-tinged to blue-tinged green foliage and growing to about 24" high and maybe slightly wider. We generally see this species in drier sandier soils in the pineywoods along with B. bracteata although it is fairly adaptable as long as soils have average or better drainage. This species is limited to southern Arkansas, eastern Texas, and throughout Louisiana excluding the Mississippi River floodplains. The flowers are followed by small, few seeded pods that turn brown at maturity and provide fodder for seed eating songbirds and smaller mammals. Provide Nuttall's Wild Indigo with a full sun to part sun site in a fertile, average moist, acidic soil with decent drainage. Easy and reliable. Item# 13127

Shades of red, burnt orange, golden yellow, and green are randomly splashed across the glossy evergreen foliage of this durable groundcover. Ogon Nishiki Asiatic Jasmine, a.k.a. Salsa, Summer Sunset, and Golden Brocade, creates a fiery splash of color anywhere in the garden or spilling from containers, over walls, or even from hanging baskets. Trachelospermum asiaticum is a naturally evergreen, 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine that can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial and the more the better. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. Item# 941

Ontario Aster, Bottomland Aster

Symphyotrichum ontarionis, Aster ontarionis

Beginning as early as midsummer the branching stems are cloaked in 1/2" wide white daisies with a contrasting yellow eye eventually becoming reddish. The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract mainly smaller pollinators like bees providing an important late summer source for winter stores. The Ontario Aster, Symphiotrichum ontarionis, is a native perennial that colonizes via rhizomes and grows to about 30-40"H. It is found mainly in the central US from coastal Louisiana north to Canada commonly in semi-shaded sites along stream banks, bogs, and similar consistently moist locations. Deadhead once flowering is complete to minimize reseeding if desired but songbirds may enjoy the small seeds if they are left to ripen. This species is very similar to and is often confused with other white flowered late summer and fall flowering asters. Caterpillar host: Field Crescent, Pearl Crescent, Texan Crescent, Roadside Checkerspot, Hoffman's Checkerspot, and American Lady.
