Swans In Flight Siberian Iris

Iris x 'Swans In Flight'  

This multi-award winning Siberian Iris produces extra large, up to 5" wide, bright white flowers which are accented with yellow signals. Swans In Flight flowers in very late in the season atop sturdy 30-36"H stems. The deep green narrow foliage provides grass-like motion in the garden even when the plants are not in flower. Provide Siberian Iris with an average moist to consistently moist moderately fertile soil and they can be planted near ponds, streams, and bog gardens as well as in average moist garden and landscape settings. Sweet Coneflower

This vigorous native produces masses of black-eyed golden yellow daisies from mid-summer to fall on tall sturdy stems. A vigorous clump forming perennial common to stream banks and moist areas but will do fine in average garden soils. The sweetly scented foliage gives it its common name. Wonderfully fragrant of licorice or anise when bruised or dried, Sweet Goldenrod produces medium to large pyramidal clusters of golden yellow flowers in summer that are excellent for attracting pollinators and other beneficials. The flowers and foliage, fresh or dried, is often used to make a very nice herbal tea, as a mild spice in cooking, and could certainly be used in potpourris as well (Bonnie fell in love with the fragrance of the dried seed heads!). The light coral pink flowers of this Turkscap are blushed a darker near red on the outside edges of the curling petals creating a sweet two toned bi-color effect. Tennessee Purple Coneflower

Echinacea tennesseensis  

Large dark purplish pink rays surround the green and copper tinged cone of nectar rich disk flowers in summer and interestingly the flowers always face eastward. The Tennessee Purple Coneflower is a rare species of Echinacea known only from a small area in central Tennessee around the Nashville area and was one of the very first plants to be added to the Endangered Species list but now the populations are stable enough that it has been unlisted and is a model success story for endangered plant species. A taprooted drought resistant native perennial, provide the Tennessee Purple Coneflower with a well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny site in the garden and landscape. The flowers attract a menagerie of pollinators, especially butterflies, bees, as well as hummingbirds and other garden beneficials. 6-8" deep pinkish-red saucer-shaped blooms are borne continuously from late spring until the first frost on this vigorous perennial Hibiscus. Terri's Pink Perennial Hibiscus, a.k.a. the Single Red Confederate Rose, is an excellent addition to any garden and is a favorite in ours! This is a sterile hybrid which does not produce seed pods and so can spend all of it's energy on flowering! The flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees all on a plant that rarely exceeds 8' high. For the best results provide full sun in an average moist, moderately fertile to rich soil. Provide a protective winter mulch in zones 7A-8B. Texan Trailing Phlox

Phlox nivalis ssp. texensis  

An exceptionally rare species found only in 4 Texas counties, Texan Trailing Phlox is a low growing groundhugging perennial that produces clusters of deep fuchsia pink Thrift-like flowers held above the low trailing stems that are densely covered in short needle-like deep green foliage. The flowers attract butterflies large and small alike. This evergreen native perennial needs excellent drainage and is typically found growing on sandy pimple mounds. It can be used as a groundcover in the garden and landscape where soils have excellent drainage. Texan Trailing Phlox, Phlox nivalis ssp. texensis, also makes an easy and forgiving container plant with stems that can trail to 12" or more. In containers use a cactus-like mix and preferrably unglazed terra cotta containers. Item# 11966

A choice native coneflower, the Texas Coneflower produces 3-5" bright golden yellow daisies that  are borne singly, or in small clusters of up 5 flowers, and are held on sturdy upright stems in summer. A rosette of large, rich dark green glossy foliage subtends the flower stalks. Texas Coneflower provides us with a medium-sized Rudbeckia that is similar in habit to the stately Giant Coneflower. Texas Gold Columbine

Aquilegia x 'Texas Gold'  

Texas Gold Columbine produces bright sunny yellow flowers over an extended period from mid to late spring. The spurred flowers are visited by a variety of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and moths. The fine, fern-like soft textured blue green foliage provides a nice contrast with surrounding plants. Columbine are not always long lived perennials but readily reseed on bare soils. Provide this beautiful perennial to biennial with a moist, semi-shaded location for the best results. Texas Ironweed

Texas Ironweed produces clusters of rich purple, to pinkish purple, frilly flowers in summer atop fairly sturdy upright stems. This one of the smaller growing Ironweeds and can be somewhat rhizomatous but does not appear to aggressive. This is tough little drought resistant perennial that is excellent for pollinators common to well-drained soils. Texas Ironweed is shade tolerant but will perform best when grown in full sun in well-drained soils. Item# 10671.

Hedychium species 'Thai Spirit'  

Tall spikes of orange buds open to bright orange flowers with contrasting deep red stamens. The flowers deepen to red, red-orange as they age and are produced in late summer atop the blue-green stalks adorned with smooth, wide tropical looking foliage. Some sources suggest that this is a new species that was collected from Thailand although it resembles Hedychium coccineum. Vigorous and relatively tall growing. Provide a partly sunny location in a rich, moist to average moist, well-drained soil for optimum growth and flowering. Item# 11531

True Blue Gentian

Clusters of deep blue 2" long pointed buds open to long-lasting tubular deep blue flowers that eventually fade to purplish-blue with the show beginning in early to midsummer and continuing into fall. True Blue Gentian is a hardy clump-forming perennial that develops into a well-branched 18-24"H x 12-18"W plant. A Darrell Probst is an open pollinated hybrid of Gentiana makinoi that is reported to be hardy into zone 8. True Blue Gentian does best in a full sun in areas with cooler summers and will likely need part shade where summers are hot.
