Van Remsen Salvia, Anise Sage

Salvia 'Van Remsen' (S. guaranitica hybrid)

Large intense deep blue flowers emerge from tall spikes beginning in spring and continuing throughout the growing season and into fall. Van Remsen Salvia, an Anise Sage or chance hybrid, is an excellent nectar plant for hummingbirds and may also be visited by larger butterflies. Unlike many of the Salvia guaranitica selections available Van Remsen is a clump forming vigorous growing perennial that can hit 7' high bringing the flowers closer to the hummingbirds and towering over most other garden perennials. This cultivar was discovered in the garden of James Van Remsen of Louisiana and was named and introduced by Salvia guru Richard Dufresne of North Carolina. The Variegated Bleeding Heart Vine makes an excellent choice for a well-lit patio or porch with a northern or eastern exposure or anywhere it is shaded throughout the hottest portion of the day. Variegated Blue Sky Vine, Blue Trumpet Vine

Thunbergia grandiflora 'Variegata'

Large creamy yellow, white, and green foliage acts as the backdrop for large hanging clusters of 3" wide, sky blue trumpet shaped flowers that are produced on new growth throughout the summer and into fall. The Variegated Blue Sky Vine is a vigorous twining tropical vine that revels in the warmth of summer and this form appears to be just as vigorous and sun loving as the solid green form. Evergreen in frost free locations, establish in spring once the danger of frost has past as a die-back perennial vine in zones 8-9, or it can easily be maintained as a container plant where not hardy. Variegated Giant Liriope, Lilyturf

Liriope muscari 'Variegata Gigantea'

A rarely offered but beautiful cultivar of Giant Liriope, with the long wide arching strap-like foliage that is heavily marked in cream and green. Use this semi slow growing, clump forming perennial as an accent or in mass to brighten shaded areas of the garden or in containers as a specimen or in mixed plantings where the foliage color and texture will contrast nicely. Does best in shade or semi-shade in a well-drained soil. Item# 10126

Grows To: 16-20"H x 24-30"W
Outdoor Light: AM sun, Part shade, Light shade

Large deep green heart shaped foliage is veined with silver and randomly splotched with maroon and black. The Variegated Monkey Ball Vine is a vigorous but manageable and unusual perennial twining tropical vine that will grow to the height of its support whether 6' or 30' high. Most resources suggest that it is only hardy to zone 10 but we have it in the ground here in zone 8B and it comes back reliably if well-established before cool fall and winter weather sets in. Also known as Ornamental Yam, Dioscorea dodecaneura, it is late to emerge from natural winter dormancy in spring but grows vigorously once it takes off. It can be easily overwintered indoors as a container plant where not hardy. Item# 3128

Variegated Shooting Star Lily, Weeping Anthericum, Saunder's Spider Plant

Chlorophytum saundersoniae 'Variegatum', Anthericum saundersoniae

Grown more for its beautifully variegated, starkly contrasting bright white and deep green, upright to slightly arching clumps of slender foliage than for the near continuous procession of starry, ½" wide white flowers produced throughout the warmer months of the year on gracefully arching stems. The iris-like flowers are reported to attract bees, butterflies, and other smaller pollinators. Variegated Shooting Star Lily, a selection of Anthericum saundersoniae but now reclassified as Chlorophytum saundersoniae, is a naturally evergreen, clump forming member of the Asparagus family and a close cousin of the popular Spider or Airplane Plant, Chlorophytum comosum. It is adaptable to both full sun to bright shade as well as to soil types although an average moist, fertile, well-drained loam or sandy loam rich in organic matter may be optimum in the garden and landscape. The Variegated Shooting Star Lily also makes an easy container plant as a specimen or as a filler in mixed combination pots and can be easily overwintered indoors near a sunny window. Item# 13064

Variegated Shrimp Plant

Justicia brandeegeana 'Variegata'

The Variegated Red Shrimp Plant produces a continuous display of upright to arching spikes composed of large showy maroon bracts from which the individual maroonish-red and white tubular flowers emerge in spring and summer to year round under warm tropical conditions. This plant has exceptional flower power along with beautifully variegated foliage that is flecked and splotched with creamy white. Use as a container plant specimen and in mixed container gardens as well as in the garden and landscape. The common Shrimp Plant, Justicia brandegeeana, is a heat loving, naturally evergreen, bushy, tropical plant with dark olive green foliage and grows to about 24" high by about 18" wide. It is both full sun and bright shade tolerant but tends to have the densest branching habit where it receives at least 4 hours or more of direct sunlight. Provide an average to well-drained, moderately fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Beginning in mid to late summer and continuing until the first frost, billowy clusters composed of hundreds of nearly 1" wide white daisies with a prominent yellow eye are produced atop tall stems attracting a bevy of bees and butterflies. White Boltonia, Boltonia asteroides, is a tall, stoloniferous, herbaceous perennial native mainly to the central US along the Mississippi River valley but there are also populations on the east and west coasts. It will do best in an average moist to moist soil and can tolerate both periodic drought and flooding once fully established, although, it seems to do best in a moist, well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny location. Plants in too much shade or in overly fertile soils may flop and a late spring to early summer pruning can help to promote bushier sturdier plants if this is an issue. White Boltonia's height lend it to use in naturalistic settings or near the back of the border. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, Inc., all rights reserved. Item# 13174
