The large rounded clusters of deep red-orange trumpet shaped flowers with a starkly contrasting sunny yellow throat are produced between early winter and midspring and are held atop sturdy dark green stems above and among the glossy, dark green, wide arching foliage. The Clivia or Kaffir Lily, Clivia miniata, is an easy to grow tropical, naturally evergreen, shade loving, clump-forming herbaceous perennial that readily adapts to being grown indoors over winter where it should be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings. This 6-8 week dry period in fall and winter along with temperatures below about 50oF are required to induce bud and flower development on mature plants for winter and spring flowering. Water them too much in winter and it may be at the expense of flowers but they readily wilt to let you know when water is needed and soon straighten back up once moisture is available. The spikes of ball-shaped deep red-pink buds uncurl into deep rosy pink and cream flowers that may be produced throughout the year on mature plants and are sure to attract low-flying hummingbirds and some larger bees. Coastal Gem Grevillea is a very low growing nearly ground-hugging, evergreen, subtropical shrub that tops out at about 1' high and can reach 4-5' feet across at maturity. It makes an easy choice as an evergreen groundcover in tough situations where hardy or add it to rock and xeric gardens for a long-flowering specimen plant.
