Sinfonietta Louisiana Iris

Iris x 'Sinfonietta'

Medium to deep blue falls and standards with the falls being accented by contrasting gold crests at their base are produced in early to midseason, or March to April, atop 30-36" high stems. Sinfonietta Louisiana Iris has been highly popular since its introduction and was awarded an Honorable Mention in 1990 and the Award of Garden Merit in 1992 by the American Iris Society. Louisiana Irises are easy and adaptable, rhizomatous perennials with fans of deep green sword-like foliage and seem as at home in standing water as they do in average moist garden soils. Remember that these plants do most of their growing in fall and winter and so this is when they should be fed and fall is also a great time to divide plants if desired. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 13339

Grows To: 30-36"H
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

2-3" long, light bluish purple, slightly flaring tubular flowers are produced in large hanging clusters designed for hummingbird pollination. Sky King is a reliably free flowering selection on a vigorous growing upright to spreading, naturally evergreen tropical shrub. This miniature cousin of the Angel's Trumpet is easily enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy. Provide good drainage and fertile, average moist soil in partial to filtered sun for the best results. Iochroma, Tubeflower, or Mini Angel's Trumpets flower on new growth so keep them growing and healthy for and endless display. Item# 790

Smallhead Doll's Daisy

Boltonia diffusa var. diffusa

Beginning in summer and continuing until the first frost, white upward facing, small, 1/2-3/4" wide, white daisies with a prominent yellow eye are borne singly and small clusters over a long period attracting a variety of bees, smaller butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Smallhead Doll's Daisy, Boltonia diffusa var. diffusa, is a medium to tall, stoloniferous, herbaceous perennial with blueish green narrow foliage. A native of the Southeastern US, it is normally seen in or near consistently moist areas and so it will likely prefer a moist to average moist soil and can tolerate both periodic drought and flooding once fully established. It will likely grow and flower best in a moist, average to well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny location. Plants in too much shade or in overly fertile soils may flop and a late spring to early summer pruning can help to promote bushier sturdier plants if this is an issue. Smallhead Doll's Daisy may be best suited to naturalistic settings or near the back of the border. Item# 13338

Grows To: 3-4'(-6')H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

Light azure blue falls and standards are accented with darker veining and deep golden yellow bee guides. The Southern Blue Flag, Iris virginica tentatively, is a native of Louisiana but is not an actual Louisiana Iris as we had originally thought as the mother plant was shared with us without a name. We previously offered this as Light Blue Louisina Iris but it has kindly been tentatively identified for us by a Louisiana Iris grower and appears to fit the botanical descriptions. The Southern Blue Flag is just as vigorous and hardy as the Louisiana Irises and will do well under similarly moist to wet to average moist soils in a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. It can be set in water gardens where the container is just below the water's surface. Stevie's Wonder Lily of the Nile, Agapanthus

Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis 'Stevie's Wonder'

Huge round clusters composed of extra large bell-shaped deep violet-blue flowers held on sturdy stems atop the narrow strap-like medium green foliage in late spring to early summer and potentially into fall on well-established clumps. Stevie's Wonder Lily of the Nile or Agapanthus is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial with a tropical look but this cultivar has proven to have excellent hardiness into zone 7. The flowering spikes are typically 2-3' high in areas that experience hardy winter freezes (zone 7-8) but they are reported to reach up to 6' high in zone 9 with reports that the flower clusters can reach near volleyball size! The flowers of Agapanthus attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Provide Stevie's Wonder Lily of the Nile a full to partly sunny site in a well-drained, average moist, fertile soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Makes an easy and low-maintenance container plant where not hardy. May be fully winter deciduous. Item# 12467

Storm Cloud Lily of the Nile, Agapanthus

Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis 'Storm Cloud'

6" wide rounded clusters of 1" wide deep blue-purple to dark purple trumpet shaped flowers are produced atop sturdy 3' high stalks in summer that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Though recent competition has increased when it comes to reliably cold hardy Agapanthus cultivars, Storm Cloud is still considered to be one of the most reliable, naturally winter dormant cultivars but it will benefit from a breathable mulch in any area that experiences freezing temperatures for extended periods. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established but generally prefers an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny site. Deer and rabbit resistant and moderately salt tolerant. Makes an easy and low maintenance container plant where not hardy. Item# 1144

Grows To: 2-3'H x 2-3'W space about 12'' or more apart
