Helianthus hirsutus, H. stenophyllus

2-3" wide sunflowers with golden yellow to primrose yellow ray petals and yellow disc flowers are produced in summer to fall singly and in few-flowered clusters atop short sturdy stems attracting bees, butterflies, and other garden beneficials. The Hairy Sunflower, Helianthus hirsutus, is one of the smaller growing Sunflower species whose sturdy stems are adorned with opposite, lanceolate, rough feeling, deep green foliage and the leaf pairs sit at 90o to those above or below. In its native habitat, this is a 2-4' high, rhizomatous, colonizing, herbaceous, winter deciduous perennial that is typically found locally in dryish, sandy to loamy, well-drained soils in the Pineywoods but is found throughout much of the central and eastern US into Canada and northern Mexico. In rich fertile soils it is reported to grow as high as 5-7' and it may be at its best where it can be allowed to naturalize as in meadows, prairies, forest edges, and roadside plantings. Hanging clusters of buttery yellow fragrant flowers that are centered by a purple to burgundy star-shaped corona are produced during the warmer months of the year. Hoya cumingiana, or Paluki in its native Phillipines, is somewhat of a sprawling shrub-like Hoya with closely stacked small rounded glossy medium green foliage that may be at its best when trained to a support like a small trellis. Its foliage is nice enough that it could be grown for its architectural form with the flowers simply as a bonus. This is considered to be one of the easier to grow shrub-like Hoyas that mainly needs to be allowed to dry out somewhat between waterings. The fragrant flowers are likely to draw butterflies and other pollinators. Its ease of growth, unusual looking foliage, and fragrant flowers make this Hoya one of the more sought after species. Ilwang Dwarf Golden Variegated Korean Forsythia, Green Stem Forsythia

Forsythia viridissima var koreana 'Ilwang'

The bare winter stems are adorned with bright sunny yellow flowers in late winter and early spring attracting mainly bees as pollinators. Once the flowering season is finished this beautiful shrub is adorned with gold, yellow and deep green variegated foliage providing color until autumn when the foliage takes on purple tones until it falls away. The Dwarf Golden Variegated Korean Forsythia was first shared with us by the late great nurseryman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana and after much research we believe this to be Forsythia viridissima var. koreana 'Ilwang'. We have also selected the cultivar Solid Gold with solid yellow foliage. This is an easy to grow, low maintenance, compact growing deciduous shrub with an arching, fountaining habit growing wider than tall and maxing out at about 3'H x 3-4'W. Its golden foliage can tolerate full sun but may lighten to cream and yellow but this does not appear to affect the plant's vigor it. Provide a fertile soil with average or better drainage and average moisture.
