Lemon Vine, Lemon-Leaf Rose Cactus

Pereskia aculeata 'Godseffiana'

The Lemon Vine creates a beautiful foliage plant with its yellow to bronze and even orange, thick succulent leaves that adorn this vining tropical cactus. Makes a wonderful hanging basket, allow it to spill from mixed containers, or train it as a vine. More light produces richer foliage color. Mature plants may produce white to pale yellow flowers in spring or fall that may be followed by small cactus fruits. Item# 10350.

Large, 4", primrose yellow flowers with a dark, nearly black, burgundy eye are borne from summer to fall. When grown from seed it can become a large shrub to small tree-like in mild winter climates (zones 10 and warmer) but is a die-back perennial in zones 9A/B to 8B. Large deep olive green to a rich deep green foliage has velvety pubescence. Can be grown in full sun but most sources suggest that it should be given afternoon shade and needs good drainage in acid to mildly acidic soils for the best performance. Item# 10129

Lemon Zest Cestrum

Cestrum aurantiacum 'Lemon Zest'

Huge clusters of 1-1/2" tubular yellow flowers are borne profusely throughout summer and fall on this vigorous shrub-like perennial and attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The flowers are sweetly fragrant at night and likely attract hummingbird moths. Lemon Zest Cestrum becomes large and shrub like in mild winter climates whereas in the coldest portions of its range, like zone 8B, it will often freeze to the ground and return in spring. Lion Cub Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia

Rudbeckia 'Lion Cub' PPAF

The long-lasting, double, pom pom mum-like flowers are composed of numerous narrow deep golden yellow petals that are centered by a dark chocolate brown cone all held on sturdy stems to about 14" high atop a mound of deep green foliage. Flowering begins in late spring to early summer and should continue into early fall attracting a variety of smaller pollinators. Lion Cub Rudbeckia, or Black-Eyed Susan, is a hybrid that was selected not only for its summerlong display of bright flowers but also for its tight compact habit that lends it to use as a low maintenance container plant as well as in the garden and landscape. The flower petals develop a red edge as they age. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Maiden of Great Promise Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Maiden of Great Promise'

Medium to large, semi-double to peony to anemone form, deep rosy pink flowers with contrasting golden stamens are produced late in the season, March to April. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Maiden of Great Promise Camellia is an exceptionally cold hardy, as in zone 6B, large flowered Japonica with a moderate rate of growth and a densely branching, upright to rounded habit. It was reported to have come to Camellia Forest Nursery from Longwood Gardens, where it has proven quite reliable, and potentially initially orginated in Ohio. Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Large clusters of 1" wide starry golden yellow flowers with anthers that age to a contrasting red may be produced throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. The flowers attract bees and butterflies and if pollinated they are followed by 3/4-1" wide helicopter-like samaras. Maiden's Jealousy, Tristellateia australasiae, is a naturally evergreen tropical twining woody climber with rich green foliage and purplish stems on the growth. It can be grown in the ground in areas with mild winters and can also be grown as a container plant where not hardy. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum flowering. Maiden's Jealousy should be fairly tolerant of soil types as it is a component of Mangrove swamps and coastal forests in Tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. Item# 12026

Manipur Gold Ginger (Yellow, Fragrant)

Large spikes of headily fragrant, golden yellow butterfly-shaped flowers are accented with a darker orange blotch and red-orange anthers and filaments all atop sturdy red tinged 4-5' high stems and glossy dark green foliage. Manipur Gold Ginger is considered to potentially be an as yet unnamed species from Manipur province of northeastern India and was originally introduced by Tim Chapman of Gingerwood Nursery in southern Louisiana. The fragrant showy flowers should attract larger butterflies and maybe even the hummingbird-like pollinating Sphinx moths. Provide gingers with a rich, moist, and well-drained soil for optimum growth and flowering in an area that receives at least some direct sunlight or ample filtered sunlight. The flowers of the large type Hedychium gingers can also be used for fresh cut flowers once the flowers of the spike have begun opening as long as the fragrance is not overpowering indoors. Margarita Carolina Yellow Jessamine, with larger flowers, more flowers, and improved cold hardiness over the species surviving -25oF at North Creek Nurseries in Landenberg, PA. This a native, twining, evergreen to semi-evergreen vine with glossy, dark green, narrow foliage that can climb up to 20' high but is just as happy on a 6' fence or other sturdy support. The species, Gelsemium sempervirens, is native to the southeastern US, but, Margarita was selected by Don Jacobs of Eco Gardens in Decatur, Georgia. Maryland Goldenaster

Maryland Goldenaster is a clump forming native perennial whose silky-edged rosette of foliage is barely noticed much of the year but in fall it bursts into color producing a multitude of 18-24" stems that are topped by large clusters of nearly 1" wide golden yellow daisies. The perfect native replacement for mums in the fall garden and one of our favorite fall flowering native perennials. The Maryland Goldenaster is generally found in sandy, well-drained soils in full sun to partially shaded locations and is somewhat drought resistant once well-established. This is sure to brighten up the late summer and fall meadow, prairie, or roadside as well. It provides bees and smaller butterflies with a much needed source of pollen and nectar late in the season. Soft primrose yellow, fragrant double flowers are born in relatively large clusters that open over a long period. Mathilde Ferrier or Hardy Double Yellow Oleander is an old favorite and makes an excellent container specimen as well as being hardy enough to grow throughout zone 8 (see more info) and warmer regions.
