Yellow Flowers or Flower Parts

This vigorous native produces masses of black-eyed golden yellow daisies from mid-summer to fall on tall sturdy stems. A vigorous clump forming perennial common to stream banks and moist areas but will do fine in average garden soils. The sweetly scented foliage gives it its common name. A good choice for the back of the border. Item# 9261.

Wonderfully fragrant of licorice or anise when bruised or dried, Sweet Goldenrod produces medium to large pyramidal clusters of golden yellow flowers in summer that are excellent for attracting pollinators and other beneficials. The flowers and foliage, fresh or dried, is often used to make a very nice herbal tea, as a mild spice in cooking, and could certainly be used in potpourris as well (Bonnie fell in love with the fragrance of the dried seed heads!). Another of the garden friendly clump forming Goldenrods, Sweet Goldenrod makes a nice addition to the garden, as well as in natural areas and along roadsides. Item# 10684.

A choice native coneflower, the Texas Coneflower produces 3-5" bright golden yellow daisies that  are borne singly, or in small clusters of up 5 flowers, and are held on sturdy upright stems in summer. A rosette of large, rich dark green glossy foliage subtends the flower stalks. Texas Coneflower provides us with a medium-sized Rudbeckia that is similar in habit to the stately Giant Coneflower. Small clusters of 1" medium yellow lily-like flowers or born on tall slender, 3-5' spikes in fall well above the low light green rosettes of soft succulent narrow strap-like foliage. The Texas Craglily is a rare Texas native that is Texas tough and surprisingly cold tolerant considering it's native home is in the southern most tip of the panhandle. Drought tolerant and easy. Texas Gold Columbine produces bright sunny yellow flowers over an extended period from mid to late spring. The spurred flowers are visited by a variety of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and moths. The fine, fern-like soft textured blue green foliage provides a nice contrast with surrounding plants. Columbine are not always long lived perennials but readily reseed on bare soils. Provide this beautiful perennial to biennial with a moist, semi-shaded location for the best results. Texas Gold Columbine, a hybrid seed strain of Aquilegia chrysantha var. hinkleyana x A. canadensis, was selected and introduced by Greg Grant and Jerry Parsons and is a Texas Superstar® plant selection. 8" long golden trumpets with purple veins are borne in late winter and early spring on this scrambling tropical climber with cream and green variegated foliage. Most unusual. Item # 698.

Redwing, Vining Maple, and Mariposa are among its many names, whatever you choose to call it this rather hardy vine with tropical origins creates quite a show throughout the warmer months of the year with a near continuous display of yellow, orchid-like flowers that are quickly followed by bright red, winged, maple-like seeds. Even the new growth is bright red adding to its color show. Grow Redwings as a vine or a sprawling shrub preferably in a sunny location and it should reward you for many years to come. Item # 1232.

Yellow trumpet shaped flowers are heavily accented by deep brick red in the throat and are produced in mass in spring to early summer with flowering coinciding with the arrival of migrating hummingbirds. The flowers have a fragrance similar to the candy Bit O' Honey that my mother often enjoyed as we were growing up. The flowers also attract larger bees and other pollinators. The Wabash Valley Crossvine, a selection of Bignonia capreolata from its northern most regions in Wabash County in southern Illinois and was selected by the late Dr. Wesley Whiteside and was introduced to the nursery trade by Ellen Hornig via Broken Arrow Nursery. It was selected at least in part for its reliable zone 6 cold hardiness. The Crossvine is a vigorous semi-evergreen, clinging native vine that produces pads at the ends of its tendrils that can attach to most surfaces without harming brickwork and masonry. These native vines make a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. Item# 13055

1" golden yellow daisies sit atop the dark rich green foliage of this durable groundcover. Drought tolerant once established, Wedelia revels in the heat and sun creating a dense 8-12" high mass of foliage, stems and flowers. Evergreen in mild winter climates but may freeze to the ground in the northern portions of its range. Item# 718.

Bright golden yellow daisies top the sturdy and branched, 3-5' stems of this perennial native Sunflower. The Western Sunflower will quickly create a ground-covering colony of plants by multiplying via underground rhizomes. The spent flower stalks hold seeds for songbirds and will die back to the ground in fall but are quickly replaced by a multitude of new rosettes in winter. An easy and durable plant for naturalizing and native to much of the southeastern US. Considered to be one of the least aggressive spreading Sunflowers. Caterpillar host: Milbert's Tortoiseshells. 12-18" long sturdy spikes of white pea-like blossoms contrast with the purplish black stems and are born in spring above the newly unfurling bluish green foliage on tall 3-4' stems. Baptisia's are durable pest and disease resistant native taprooted perennials and could be considered the Lupine for the south. An excellent addition to the perennial border or cut-flower garden that is drought tolerant, deer resistant, durable, and easy. Item# 10230.

In late summer and fall loads of dainty 1/2-1" wide white daisies, with yellow centers or disk flowers that age to red-purple, literally cover the plants for weeks and offer nectar and pollen to a variety of smaller pollinators. The White Wood Aster, Aster divaricatum now Eurybia divaricata, is a medium-sized bushy, shade and drought tolerant, vigorously spreading rhizomatous, native perennial common throughout the Eastern US. This is one of the earliest Asters to begin flowering in late summer and can even be utilized as a mum replacement in containers if desired. The White Wood Aster may be best suited to semi-shaded to shaded, naturalistic areas where it will readily colonize eventually creating a groundcover-like mass of offsets. Provide a partly shaded site in average to well-drained soils with average to dryish (once well-established) moisture conditions. Light blue narrow rays surround the eye of contrasting yellow disc flowers sit atop the neat mounds of foliage beginning in late summer and continuing into fall. The nectar rich flowers attract a variety of smaller pollinators. Wood's Light Blue New York Aster, a selection of Symphyotrichum novi-belgii or Aster novi-belgii, is a 8-12" x 8-12" compact selection of the species that is a good choice as a replacement for fall mums and can be enjoyed as both a container plant as well as near the front of the border in the garden and landscape. Clusters of sunny yellow 1" orchid-like flowers are borne in spring and summer and into fall and are followed by chartreuse butterfly-like seed pods that fade to brown. A vigorous and hardy yet well-mannered twining climber the Yellow Butterfly Vine can grow to 15-20' high if given support or it can easily be maintained on a fence, trellis, or arbor. This woody naturally evergreen vine can also be grown as a mounding shrub to 4-6' high. Where not hardy the Yellow Butterfly Vine is easily maintained as a container plant. The beautiful flowers provide nectar and pollen to a variety of garden beneficials including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Item# 745.

A beautiful clear yellow Cape Honeysuckle that produces masses of 2" tubular flowers in large clusters in summer and fall or nearly continuously throughout the year under frost free conditions. This easy heat and sun loving tropical can be grown as a medium to large arching shrub or hedge, vine or espalier, and can be trained into tree standards. The tubular flowers are a treat for hummingbirds and larger butterflies. Where not hardy it is easily maintained as a container plant. Item# 746.

This rare yellow flowered form of Chinese Hat produces yellow tubular blooms that emerge from the Chinese hat-like yellow calyxes are produced from late summer to autumn along the arching stems of this unusual shrub. An excellent late summer and fall flowering shrub-like to die-back perennial for a sunny location. Easy and begins flowering just in time for the Hummingbird migration southward. Provide a deep winter mulch in the northern portions of its range. Item# 10036.

Loose clusters of sweetly fragrant, creamy yellow, star shaped flowers are produced over a long period beginning in late spring and early summer on this vigorous and durable evergreen twining climber. This cultivar of Confederate Jasmine appears to flower a good deal longer than the more common white flowered selections. An excellent choice for arbors, trellises, and evergreen screening on a lattice work or fence. Confederate Jasmine can also be used as a deep groundcover that will grow to 12-24" high. Where not hardy they can be maintained as easy and low maintenance container specimens. This may be the same as Woodlander's 'Mandianum' which may yet be the 'Star of Toscane'. Item # 11020

The Yellow Firecracker Fern produces loads of 1" creamy yellow tubular flowers that are born in large loose clusters throughout the warmer months of the year or nearly year round where winters are mild. Excellent for Hummingbirds! Plant it with the red for a colorful show. This is a durable and long-lived, clump forming perennial that requires little additional care once well-established. The Firecracker Fern has excellent heat and sun tolerance as well as moderate drought resistance once well-established. It is even listed as being suitable for xeriscaping. Round clusters of 1" light yellow to white tubular flowers are produced from about mid to late spring atop sturdy square stems adorned with lightly fragrant foliage. Newly described to science in 2011 by Jason Singhurst and Walter Holmes, the Yellow Flowered Beebalm has as yet only been found in northeastern Texas and Miller county in Arkansas. This is a slowly spreading native perennial well suited to naturalistic settings such as meadows, prairies, or roadside planting as well as in mixed perennial borders and pollinator habitats.
