Spikes of spurred, golden yellow, 1/2-3/4" long tubular flowers are produced in late winter and early to midspring at the tips of the stems attracting smaller bees and other pollinators. Smallflower Fumeflower, Corydalis micrantha subsp. australis, is a fall and winter growing, native, spring flowering annual with finely cut deep blue-green foliage adorning the low growing stems. It is found naturally from near central Texas, throughout Louisiana and Arkansas, eastward along the Gulf Coast, and in the coastal counties of North and South Carolina as well as in a few other inland areas in Illinois and Missourri. Smallflower Fumeflower, we grew up knowing as Scrambled Eggs, is typically found in sandy to loamy soils with excellent drainage. It readily reseeds on exposed soils and in disturbed sites. Solar Cascade Goldenrod, Short's Goldenrod

Solidago shortii 'Solar Cascade'

The long, cascading spikes composed of hundreds of golden yellow flowers are produced in late summer and fall attracting a variety of pollinators and an especially important for native bee species. Solar Cascade Short's Goldenrod, a Cincinnati Zoo Botanical Garden selection of Solidago shortii as part of the Endangered Plant Program, is a well-behaved, clump forming, or short thizomatous, upright to arching perennial that is tolerant of calcareous soils, has good deer and drought resistance, and is self-sterile. By being self-sterile, if it is the only goldenrod species flowering at that time then any seed produced should not be viable. Use this easy to grow native perennial in naturalistic settings and in mixed perennial gardens and landscapes. Tall spikes of sunny yellow, pea-shaped, bee-pollinated flowers that age to orange with a purplish tinge are produced beginning in mid to late spring with the show lasting for weeks that is aided by the production of secondary flowering shoots. Solar Flare Prairieblues™ Baptisia or False Indigo is a hardy clump-forming taprooted perennial that emerges in early spring with purplish young foliage and stems that slowly matures to the typical light gray green. Baptisias could be considered the Lupine of the South and each will produce more and more flowering stems eventually devoloping into a dense rounded mound of foliage and flowers. A hybrid of two of our native species, the Prairieblues Baptisias were selected not only for their unique colors but also for their extra large flower spikes, durability, and vigor. The bare winter stems are adorned with bright sunny yellow flowers in late winter and early spring attracting mainly bees as pollinators. Once the flowering season is finished this beautiful shrub is adorned with solid yellow foliage providing color until autumn when the foliage takes on purple tones until it falls away. The Solid Gold Dwarf Korean Forsythia, Forsythia viridissima var. koreana 'Solid Gold', is an Almost Eden introduction that we selected as a stable sport of the cultivar Ilwang. Ilwang was first shared with us by the late great nurseryman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana. This is an easy to grow, low maintenance, compact growing deciduous shrub with an arching, fountaining habit growing wider than tall and maxing out at about 3-4'H x 4-5'W. Its golden foliage can tolerate full sun but may lighten some but this does not appear to affect the plant's vigor it. Provide a fertile soil with average or better drainage and average moisture.
