Satin Checks Peacock Ginger, Resurrection Lily, Kaempferia
Kaempferia elegans 'Satin Checks', K. laotica 'Satin Checks'
The large oval flat tropical looking rosettes of foliage is heavily checkered with deep burgundy to near black satiny checks that contrast nicely with the rich medium to deep green foliage. Satin Checks Peacock Ginger, Kaempferia elegans 'Satin Checks' and is still commonly offered as a cultivar of K. laotica, is a tropical, low growing, short rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial that naturally goes dormant in fall and returns in mid to late spring. In summer the rosettes may produce 1" wide lavender to purple flowers but the plants are grown mainly as an accent or groundcover that is happy in any average moist, well-drained, fertile soil in shaded sites. Peacock Gingers are often recommended as a Hosta or Plantain Lily replacement in hot summer climates. It can also be enjoyed as an easy and rewarding container specimen or as a ground cover beneath larger plants for a shaded porch or patio. Bring containerized plants indoors prior to the first freeze. Satin Checks Peacock Ginger is reported to tolerate some cool early or very late evening sunlight to filtered sunlight but bright shade is likely optimum for the best looking foliage. Item# 12990
