Beautiful and unique spidery lavender flowers absolutely cover this semi-dwarf evergreen shrub in mid-spring attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A rare evergreen Azalea, Koromo Shikibu, a.k.a Purple Spider, has a compact, medium-sized growth habit, excellent durability and reliability, and its unusual flower form make this a definite conversation piece. This Azalea lines the eastern border of the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Gardens at Stephen F Austin's Mast Arboretum and is a site to see in full spring flower. Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but have good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. We recommend using a slow-release, non-burning fertilizer that is labeled for acidic loving plants. Item# 3110

A Camellia Hall of Fame Award winner! Large to very large semi-double flowers of a deep watermelon red with a large nicely contrasting boss of golden yellow stamens are produced over an extended period from as early as November with some flowers in March on mature plants. The large to very large, deep coral pink flowers are centered by a boss of contrasting yellow stamens and the flowers are randomly flecked and splashed with white and are produced in early to midseason or December to March. R. L. Wheeler Variegated Camellia is a large and vigorous growing evergreen shrub with a naturally upright to rounded habit at maturity. Deep red to near maroon, starry flowers to 2" across are borne in late spring and early summer on this moderately dense naturally rounded evergreen shrub. The Red Star Anise's medium to dark green foliage has a licorice or anise-like scent when crushed. This Louisiana native is a natural component of the understory along drainages and flood zones in the southeastern portion of the US and generally prefers light shade, morning sun, to filtered shade over full sun as well as a moist well-draining acid soil. A tough native shrub that produces spikes of deep red tubular flowers touched with yellow that begin to open in early spring just as the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds begin to arrive. The Red Buckeye is typically a medium to large growing deciduous shrub that is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions although it will grow and flower best in full sun it is also tolerant of some shade. This tough little native begins flowering at a young age and is easy to grow and establish. Moderately drought resistant once well-established with few pests and diseases. Item# 3047

Brilliant crimson red bottlebrush-like flowers are produced in summer often into fall to potentially year-round under warm tropical conditions and attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Red Clusters Bottlebrush, a selection of Callistemon viminalis, is a vigorous freely flowering, naturally evergreen large shrub that can also be trained into a small tree form that matures to about 12' high by about 8' wide. In zone 8, the foliage may drop after hard freezes potentially reducing flowering and so this cultivar may be best grow in warmer winter climates like zones 9 and 10. They can also be enjoyed as container plants where not reliably hardy. Provide Bottlebrush with a full to mostly sunny site in an average to well-draining, fertile soil and they are moderately drought resistant once fully established. Item# 603

Extra large, reportedly to nearly 1/2" in diameter, brilliant red berries literally cover up this dwarf and compact deciduous shrub throughout much of winter and may last into spring. Red Sprite Dwarf Winterberry Holly, a.k.a 'Nana', 'Compacta, and 'Macrocarpa', is a USDA release that won the 2010 Holly of the Year Award from the Holly Society of America. This adaptable native shrub drops its foliage early to better show of its display of colorful berries. It can be used en masse to great effect, as a low informal hedge, or as a specimen plant near the front of the garden or landscape. Red Sprite is even small enough to enjoy as a medium-sized container plant. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a moist acidic soil. Needs a male holly, of any species, for pollination that flowers at the same time. 'Southern Gentleman' and 'Apollo' are two males that are recommended. Item# 11887

The large to very large, loose anemone to peony form, bright red flowers typically showing contrasting gold stamens atop white filaments and are produced over an extended period beginning early in the season and continuing through late, November to April. Dainty, double, 1/2" wide flowers in varying shades of light to medium pink, and sometimes with hints of lavender, are produced throughout the growing season on this truly miniature heirloom rose. Rouletti Rose, considered by some to be a selection of Rosa chinensis var. minima, is a densely branching, dwarf plant slowly building to about 2'x2'. Its small size lends it to use as a container plant, as a specimen near the front of the garden or in a sunny border or landscape, and has the potential for use as an informal groundcover. A compact hydrangea sporting large flower heads of rich purple to shades of magenta florets depending on soil ph. Royal Purple Big Leaf Hydrangea is still considered to be one of the darkest colored varieties around. It's compact habit lends it to confined spaces, smaller gardens and even container culture. The large, glowing orange and red flowers appear in spring and early summer in dense wisteria like sprays. The Scarlet Wisteria develops into a medium to large shrub with mimosa like foliage. Remove the spent flowers and seedheads to help promote repeat flowering. The beautiful pea-like flowers attract a variety of bees. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! Medium to large, lightly fragrant, loose peony form to semi-double, medium silvery-pink flowers with a boss of yellow stamens are produced in early to midseason, November to February. The pollen laden and fragrant flowers are likely to attract bees and other pollinators on warmer days. Scentsation Camellia is a large type Japonica with a moderate to vigorous, densely branching, upright to rounded habit. Exquisite! The large, perfect or rose form, pure white flowers shine like spotlights against the foil of deep green glossy foliage and are produced in mid to late season or January to April. Sea Foam is a large flowered Japonica type with a vigorous, initially upright, densely branching habit that rounds out with age to about 10' high and 6-8' wide. Large, 4-5" wide, fragrant, semi-double flowers of the purist white with wavy petals and a contrasting boss of golden yellow stamens shine like spotlights against the foil of deep green glossy foliage. Flowering begins early in the season in October continuing into December, with a few flowers into early January. Setsugekka Sasanqua Camellia has a vigorous moderately upright habit that rounds out with at maturity.
