Sandankwa Viburnum

Viburnum suspensum

Large leathery, deep green, rounded to ovate, textured foliage is accented by small clusters of fragrant small white flowers in spring and are borne at the tips of the stems. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The Sandankwa Viburnum, Viburnum suspensum, is a vigorous large growing evergreen shrub to small tree that makes a quick and easy hedge or screen. If pollinated, the plant generally needs another Viburnum that flowers at the same time for cross pollination, it produces 1/4" diameter red berries that ripen in the fall and may be utilized by wildlife. Scarlet red, 1/2-3/4" long, tart, cherry-like fruit are produced in abundance during late spring on a vigorous, pest and disease resistant deciduous fountaining shrub. The Goumi Berry is exceptionally high in vitamin C and can be enjoyed fresh or made into a jelly that is, in our opinion, as good or better than Mayhaw jelly. It can also be made into pie filling. Seeds are edible, but have an unpleasant texture. Adding a bit of almond extract to processed or deseeded pulp leaves you with an amazing cherry flavor for desserts and preserves.  This selection was shared with us many years ago by plantsman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana and our plants have been productive for over 30 years with practically no maintenance. One of the few plants with a symbiotic nitrogen fixating bacteria relationship that is not a Legume. Easy and reliable. Item# 444

The huge white fruitily fragrant flowers of the Southern Magnolia can reach up to 12" across and are set against a backdrop of deep green glossy foliage in mid to late spring. Pollinated flowers are followed by cones whose fruit ripens to bright red and are often used as additions to fall and early winter bouquets, wreaths, and other types of floral arrangements. The ripe red fruit attract songbirds and small mammals. The Southern Magnolia is a moderately fast growing tree when young and typically develops into a naturally pyramidal form when young and typically develops a rounded crown at maturity. In a full to mostly sunny position limbs will often reach to ground even on mature trees and the dense thick foliage makes a nearly impenetrable mulch beneath them. Seedling trees, which these are, are somewhat variable and flowering may not begin flowering until the trees are 10-25 years of age. Item# 12030

Large red berries cover the bare stems of this native deciduous shrub beginning in fall and lasting throughout much of winter and possibly into spring. Sunset Winterberry Holly develops into a medium-sized well branched shrub with a an upright to vase-shaped habit when young broadening with age. The textured deep green foliage may provide some yellow fall color prior to leaf fall if grown in full sun. Sweet Pomegranate

Punica granatum 'Sweet'

One of the very sweetest and earliest ripening! The crepe-like orange-pink spring flowers are followed by large, pink to green blushed red fruit that produce pink to pink blushed, exceptionally sweet, and flavorful arils that surround medium seeds and typically ripen in late summer and early fall. Good for both juice, which is clear to light pink, and fresh eating. The Sweet Pomegranate is considered to be a semi-dwarf, multi-stemmed large, deciduous shrub to small tree typically growing to about 10' x 10'. It will fruit and flower best where it receives about 150 chill hours. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in average moist to periodically dry, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and production. The Sweet Pomegranate is self-fruitful but may produce larger fruit and larger crops with a cross-pollinator which can be any other cultivar of Pomegranate. Item# 13029

Sweet Viburnum

Viburnum odoratissimum

The light apple green new growth eventually matures to a medium matte green and in spring pyramidal clusters of small fragrant white flowers are produced at the ends of the stems attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Pollinated flowers develop into 1/4" diameter round berries that turn red and eventually ripen to black. The Sweet Viburnum, Viburnum odoratissimum, is evergreen well into zone 8 but may become deciduous in zones 6-7. This is a vigorous and large growing shrub that can be trained into a treeform or pruned into a neat but coarse-textured hedge. Its lighter green foliage makes a wonderful foil for other plants with darker green foliage and brightly colored flowers. This was one of my favorite hedges to help maintain at 4'Hx4-5'W at Judge and Lady Hall's residence in DeRidder, Louisiana when we still owned Bonny Plants. Provide a full to partly sunny site in an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil for optimum growth and vigor. Item# 12732

Sweetbay Magnolia, White Bay

Magnolia virginiana

The Sweetbay Magnolia or White Bay is an upright to pyramidal generally small to medium-sized native tree typically found growing in baygalls as well as along small creeks and streams in nearly every state bordering the Atlantic Ocean including the Gulf Coast. In midspring, mature trees produce fragrant white flowers to about 4" across and are followed by typical Magnolia cones whose seeds turn a bright orangey-red when mature in fall and winter and are utilized by songbirds as well as other wildlife. Magnolia virginiana is sometimes used as a caterpillar host by Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Palamedes Swallowtail Butterfly, Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly, and the Sweet Bay Silk Moth .The deep blue-green to green foliage has a white reverse and can be used in the place of the unrelated Bay Leaf which is also known as Sweetbay or Laurus nobilis. Tangerine Princess Coral Honeysuckle

Lonicera sempervirens 'Tangerine Princess'

Clusters of soft yellow-orange tubular buds mature into medium orange tubular trumpet-shaped flowers that darken as they age. Flowering begins in late winter to early spring and continues cyclically throughout the growing season and finishing up in fall at the end of hummingbird season. Tangerine Princess Coral Honeysuckle, a Louisiana selection of Lonicera sempervirens, is a native, twining, deciduous, woody vine that is one of the longest flowering vines for attracting hummingbirds. The mother plant was discovered during a tour of the Dr. Charles Allen Nature Preserve in northern Louisiana with its namesake noted botanist, author, and retired professor Dr. Charles Allen, Ken and Sonie Milton, etal. Coral or Trumpet Honeysuckle will happily twine through a 6' high chain link fence or up an 8' arbor, trellis, or post. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. 1/4" red berries follow flowering and are a treat for songbirds. Item# 957

Vining Maple, Red Wings, Mariposa

Heteropterys glabra

Redwing, Vining Maple, and Mariposa are among its many names, whatever you choose to call it this rather hardy vine with tropical origins creates quite a show throughout the warmer months of the year with a near continuous display of yellow, orchid-like flowers that are quickly followed by bright red, winged, maple-like seeds. Even the new growth is bright red adding to its color show. Grow Redwings as a vine or a sprawling shrub preferably in a sunny location and it should reward you for many years to come. Item # 1232.

Grows To: Vine to 15'L, Shrub to 4'H
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade, Part sun

Another excellent native shrub for the landscape! The dense neat mound of whorled deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Walter's Whorled Class Viburnum is a medium-sized selection of the southeastern native Walter's Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum, and as its name implies, its foliage is whorled around the stem thus providing 33% more greenery as compared to non-whorled selections of this species. This shrub's dense habit lends it to use anywhere a medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. Use this tough native shrub in place of Dwarf Yaupon, Indian Hawthorne, or anywhere a medium-sized, disease resistant, low maintenance shrub or hedge is desired. Provide a full sun to part shade site in an average to well-drained soil for optimum vigor. Images shown are an example of what to expect with this cultivar but are of the common Walter's Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum. Warren's Red Possumhaw Holly, Deciduous Holly

Ilex decidua 'Warren's Red'

Clusters of dainty white and green spring flowers are followed by dense clusters of glossy bright red berries that often last into spring (if the birds don't get them all!). The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract bees and smaller pollinators and even provide a caffiene kick. Warren's Red Possumhaw Holly, a selection of Ilex decidua, is a large growing, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub but could potentially be shaped into a small tree form. It has few if any pests or diseases and is quite tolerant of growing conditions from average moist to moderately wet and periodically flooded sites. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum growth, vigor, and fruit set. Almost any male native holly that flowers at the same time will pollinate the female Warren's Red Possumhaw Holly including the American Holly, Ilex opaca, and we also now offer the male Midas Possumhaw Holly as well.
