Red porterweed is awesome (9/8/2023)
For the second year in a row, I highly recommend the red Porterweed. Here is a video of a Ruby-throated hummingbird at my red Porterweed on 9.8.23.

Hummingbirds love it! (6/2/2023)
This is my second year ordering Porterweed from Almost Eden Plants. It is not winter hardy in Iowa, so I treat it as an annual (some Midwest residents have had success overwintering their Porterweed indoors - I just don’t have space to try that). The Porterweed always arrives as a healthy young plant, expertly packaged, and by fall hummingbird migration is the size of small shrubs. The hummingbirds love the Porterweed blooms!

Ruby-throated hummingbirds favor this Porterweed in my south central Pennsylvania gardens. I had a lot of fun watching and photographing them in 2022. Here is a video of one drinking nectar from the flowers.

NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME (7/13/2022)
Unfortunately the plant is short, rangy and unattractive. It bloomed vigorously at first then as summer progressed it tapered off. Right now in July, Gulf Coast, Florida, the one year old plant is about 2' tall and no blooms. My purple Porterweeds on the other hand are huge, rounded and covered with blooms and butterflies. I took cuttings from it last year and planted it several spots and we ended up pulling them out because the plants were so unattractive. This is no reflection on Almost Eden, a company that's been excellent for years in every way. I'll remain a loyal customer and recommender of this company. Ruby Throat Porterweed needs breeding work to improve it significantly for plant form, bloom season and quality of blooms.

Ruby Throat Red Porterweed (1/17/2022)
Excellent for attracting butterflies. Sulphurs, Zebra Longwings, Gulf Fritillaries, and skippers seem to love it. Grew into a very nice loose vase shaped bush 5' by 5'. The biggest drawback is it has weak wood, and a gusty storm busted it up bad, and recommend staking only because of that.
