A neighbor had this growing on her porch when I was a child in a huge wooden container that her husband had made out of an old horse buggy seat. It stayed on her porch in that bench for over 50 years. She watered it and cut it back occasionally but it was always showy and beautiful. I have it growing in a large pot with a white agapanthus and a purple trailing petunia. It always looks great regardless of our summer heat. I just planted it in the ground at the foot of some verbena bonariensis that needs something to cover its naked legs. I'm anxious to see how it does and how it looks. I also use it in flower arrangements.
