Excellent Caterpillar Plant (1/27/2017)
The flowers are beautiful, but the abundance of Gulf Fritillary caterpillars (and resultant butterflies) is my favorite feature of this vine. I planted a two or three incher in the Spring, and by Fall it had grown to four feet high and twelve feet wide, but a little on the sparse side, with very little encouragement. I easily had up to 20 or 30 caterpillars at a time, and from the end of October through the beginning of December could not walk outside without seeing at least three butterflies within the first minute or so. I am very much looking forward to the Spring to see how this vine bounces back from a hard freeze that killed (or senesced) every flower in my yard.
