Fruits & Herbs

Tempt your tastebuds with exotic fruits and spice up your life with fresh herbs. Including native and ornamentals that have fragrant foliage, flowers, seeds or were used as herbs in olden times.

Huge flat clusters, becoming dome-shaped as they mature, are composed of numerous small lightly fragrant white flowers that are followed by heavy crops of shiny black berries. The American Elderberry, Sambucus nigra ssp. canadensis, is a large growing native deciduous suckering shrub whose cooked fruit and flowers are used to create healthy and delicious confections, syrup, jelly, wine and more. The nectar rich flower clusters attract an array of pollinators and its ripe fruit is sure to attract a host of bird species. Elderberries are monoecious, both male and female at the same time, and are typically at least semi-self fertile but it is generally recommended to plant at least two different plants for cross pollination and the heaviest crops. If you order multiple plants from us, you will receive at least two different selections. The large ripe fruit clusters are a great treat for chickens. The flowers appear to be most fragrant in the evening and likely at night as well suggesting at least some moth pollination. Item #11269

Spikes of soft golden orange to yellowish 1" long tubular nectar-rich flowers are produced beginning in late spring and continue into fall atop the grayish-green fragrant foliage attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Apricot Sunrise Agastache, considered to be a hybrid of A. coccinea and A. coccinea, is a vigorous, herbaceous perennial growing to about 3' x 3' tois considered hardy to zone 6. Like all Agastache, it will do best in a full to mostly sunny site, in a fertile, average moist to periodically dry soil, with excellent drainage, and good air circulation (i,e don't crowd it). Apricot Sunrise Agastache has somewhat of a soft airy texture and the fragrant foliage helps to ensure the deer avoid it. An older cultivar but still one of the most reliable. Item# 10210

Black Adder Agastache, Giant Hyssop

Agastache 'Black Adder'

The tubular, lavender flowers emerge from contrasting deep purple buds on large flower spikes beginning in late spring or early summer and continuing into fall. The nectar rich flowers are seemingly mobbed by bees of all shapes and sizes and are also utilized by butterflies, both large and small, and hummingbirds. Black Adder Agastache or Giant Hyssop, a sterile hybrid of, Agastache rugosum x A. foeniculum, is a branching, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial growing to about 24-36" high and wide by the end of the growing season. Utilize it in containers to bring the pollinators in close as well as in sunny garden and landscapes. Its licorice or anise scented foliage help provide deer and rabbit resistance. Drooping spike-like clusters composed of numerous, lightly fragrant, small white flowers are produced in spring and are followed by small, 1/4-1/3" diameter red cherries that ripen to black and are consumed by a wide variety of birds and small mammals. The Black Cherry Tree, Prunus serotina, is a moderately fast growing, medium to large, deciduous native tree found throughout much of the eastern, central, and southwestern US as well as into Canada, Mexico, and into Central America. Its medium green serrated foliage is a caterpillar host for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Viceroy butterflies as well as a variety of moths. The Black Cherry fairly consistently produces good yellow to red fall color even here in zone 8B in southwestern Louisiana and the white and gray winter bark adds to its interest. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, average moist, fertile soils for optimum growth and vigor.Prunus serotina (Black Cherry) is generally considered self-fertile. While a single tree can produce fruit on its own, planting more than one can lead to better pollination and higher fruit yields. Item# 10469

The dense flat-topped flower clusters are composed of numerous small, white and creamy white flowers and are produced between late spring and potentially into fall atop 24-36" high stems that attract a wide variety of mainly smaller pollinators. Common Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, is a rhizomatous, evergreen, heirloom perennial with fine textured fennel-like, rich medium green, fragrant anise-scented foliage and quickly spreads to create a seemingly weed proof groundcover. It is typically regarded as a poor choice for gardens due to its rambunctious nature but makes an easy addition to naturalistic plantings like meadows, prairies, and roadsides as well as a lawn replacement and a tough and low maintenance groundcover for difficult sites like parking lot islands, provided they have good drainage. It also makes an easy and low maintenance container plant. Provide Common Yarrow with a full to mostly sunny site in lean, mineral soils, like sandy loams, with excellent drainage. Once fully established the plants need little if any maintenance, although, it is said that deadheading the flowers will help to promote repeat flowering from the lower flower stem nodes and to help limit its spread. Crazy Fortune Anise Hyssop, a selection of the award winning Blue Fortune, is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial with an upright bushy habit maturing to about 2-3'H and half as wide. The variegated foliage will be most noticeable where plants are upclose and personal making this an easy choice for containers on a sunny deck or patio or near the front of the garden or landscape. Dr. Monticello's Fig

Ficus carica 'Dr. Monticello' fig

This is a large to very large purple fig with good flavor. An heirloom fig that was brought to the US from Italy via Dr. Sam Monticello's grandmother. The soon to be Mrs. Decarlo was a 16 years old bride and on her way to meet her new husband. She wrapped the cuttings in newspaper to get them here as she traveled to the new world aboard ship. Dr. Monticello, a Lake Charles Master Gardener and retired physician, says that they have been grown in this area from the time his grandmother arrived here as well as in Kansas where part of their family migrated to.  We have tasted them off our young trees, and this is the only one, so far, that we think is tastier than Celeste!  Seems to have a richer flavor! Giant Granadilla, Giant Passion Fruit, Barbadine, Grenadine, Giant Trumbo, Badea

Passiflora granadilla, P. quadrangularis, P. macrocarpa

The fragrant very large 5" wide cupped flowers, when pollinated, produce the largest fruit of any of the Passion Fruits and mature to be 5-6" wide and 8-12" long (wow!). The Giant Granadilla, Passiflora quadrangularis, is a vigorous tropical vine with winged square stems and large oval leaves. It prefers a deep, well-drained, moist to average moist, fertile soil and a full to partly sunny position. High humidity and temperatures of 60oF or more are required for fruit set and pollination. The Giant Granadilla is considered to be self-sterile and so it requires another species or a different clone (ours are clonally propagated), like Passiflora phoenicia 'Ruby Glow', for cross pollination. In early spring, rich pink cherry blossoms cover the bare stems attracting an array of pollinators with pollinated flowers producing 3/8-1/2" diameter, tart fruit that ripen to a deep purplish red in mid to late spring to early summer. The Hiromi Dwarf Afghan Cherry, a selection of Prunus jacquemontii, is a small deciduous shrub growing to about 3-5'H and 4-5'W with an upright to spreading, bushy habit. The plants are self-fertile and have proven to fruit reliably even in the Deep South with minimal chill hours. The weight of ripening fruit can give the plants a semi-weeping habit. The small cherries are semi-sweet and tart when fully ripe and have a fairly large pit. The fruit, which doesn't all ripen at once, can be eaten fresh or made into preserves or jelly, if you have several plants, or left for the songbirds to enjoy. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, fertile soils for optimum vigor and growth. The Hiromi Cherry has moderate drought resistance once fully established in the garden or landscape. It is reported to be a butterfly host plant for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. Item# 10641

Illinois Everbearing Black Mulberry

Morus x 'Illinois Everbearing' (M. alba x M. rubra)

The large, 1-2" long x 3/8" diameter, shiny, black, virtually seedless mulberries with a very sweet flavor typically ripen in spring to summer, earlier in warmer winter regions and later in colder regions. The Illinois Everbearing Mulberry, a popular and productive hybrid of Morus alba x M. rubra, is a large and fast growing, deciduous tree with a naturally rounded habit at maturity and growing to about 30-40' high and wide. It reliably produces crops at a young age and is self-pollinating. The fruit can be enjoyed fresh or use it to make jams, jellies, syrups, or wine. Songbirds love the ripe fruit and waves of Cedar Waxwings come through annually to feast on them. Mulberries make an easy and low maintenance fruit tree for homes and gardens. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, fertile soil with average or better drainage for optimum vigor and production.
