Purple Fruit

Find plants that produce colorful purple fruit and add interest to the garden, landscape, and containers.

The American Beautyberry adorns itself in dense clusters of 1/8" wide, rich purple ,rarely white, berries that encircle the stems. The fruit begins to ripen and color up in summer but they are most noticeable on the bare winter stems. Apparently the berries sweeten as winter sets in and songbirds find them irresistible. A fast growing, native, deciduous shrub that is tolerant of sun to semi-shade but generally flowers and fruits best in full or mostly sunny conditions. Because it flowers on new growth, if the American Beautyberry gets too large it will benefit from periodic hard pruning and still produce fruit the same year if pruning is done before new growth begins in spring. Item# 10688.

The dense neat mound of deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Japanese Blueberry Tree

Elaeocarpus decipiens, E. sylvestris, Adenodus sylvestris

Grown mainly for its neat form and large leathery deep green foliage, the new growth of the Japanese Blueberry Tree emerges in bronze and reddish tones, ultimately maturing to deep dark green, and as the older foliage prepares to drop it takes on deep bright red tones. In late spring to early summer, large racemes of white to light pink, fragrant, frilly flowers that are commonly hidden among the foliage attract bees and butterflies. The flowers are followed by olive like fruits that ripen to deep blue, purple, or black and give the plant its common name. The Japanese Blueberry Tree, Elaeocarpus decipiens, is a naturally evergreen small to medium-sized tree with a slow to moderate rate of growth and can be used as a screen, hedge, or specimen providing a holly or Magnolia look in areas with mild winters. These can be shaped into very nice specimens if desired and are typically maintained with the foliage going all the way to the ground. Provide a full to mostly sunny site, in a neutral to mildly acidic, fertile, quality soil with average moisture and good drainage. Item# 13419

Taiwanese Akebia, Chocolate Vine

Akebia longeracemosa

Long drooping clusters of showy, fragrant deep maroon red female and male flowers are produced in late spring and over a long period on this somewhat tame twining woody vine. Pollinated flowers are followed by bright blue fruit similar to Akebia quinata or the Five-Leaf Akebia. The foliage of the Taiwan Akebia is a little thicker and is generally tardily deciduous but may remain nearly evergreen in the warmer parts of its cold hardiness range. A little less vigorous than the Five-Leaf Akebia making it a suitable candidate for medium sized trellises or allow it to twine along or through a fence. Rare and unusual. Item# 11546

Grows To: 8-15'H

Rounded clusters of nectar-rich lavender flowers develop into showy conical clusters of rich purple berries and are produced throughout the warmer months of the year to year-round under warm tropical conditions. Three-Leaf Lantana is an unusual species in that it is grown as much or more for its fruit than its flowers. This is a small-ish tropical shrub with a naturally upright to spreading habit and makes an easy container specimen and can be used in combination in medium-sized to large containers. Provide a full to mostly sunny position in well-drained fertile soils for optimum flower and fruit production. Item# 11698

Grows To: 2-4'H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

Clusters of maroon to purple, lightly fragrant flowers are produced in early spring among the newly emerging, beautifully and heavily variegated creamy yellow, bronze, and green new growth that matures to cream, white, and green. The Variegated Five-Leaf Akebia is an adaptable and vigorous, twining, semi-evergreen to deciduous vine with few pest or disease issues. Even though it is variegated it readily tolerates full sun conditions. Provide an average moist, well-drained, fertile soil and is tolerant of periodic drought once fully established. If cross-pollinated by another Akebia with different genetics, such as a seedling or different cultivar of Akebia quinata, it may produce 3-4" long purplish fruit. Hand pollination may be required to ensure good fruit set. The foliage alone is beautiful enough to make this plant worthy of a spot in the garden on a sturdy fence, trellis, or arbor. Item# 12049

Grows To: To 30'H but can be easily maintained on a smaller trellis or other support
