Sasanquas - Pink

Large, pure white centers, cupped, Higo-like single flowers are heavily edged in a starkly contrasting broad, deep red to cherry red band that quickly fades to white and are centered by a large boss of yellow stamens and are produced very early in the season in October. One of the earliest Camellias to flower and are sure to attract bees and other pollinators. Autumn Sunrise Sasanqua Camellia, bred by Dr. Clifford Parks, is a vigorous growing, large evergreen shrub with an upright habit and dark green medium textured foliage. Its vigor lends Autumn Sunrise to use as a screen, hedge, or specimen plant. Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Deep reddish pink 3" blossoms adorn this beautiful evergreen shrub in mid-late fall. The fallen petals create a beautiful blanket beneath the dark green glossy foliage. An easily grown and hardy shrub with deep dark green glossy foliage with a medium sized evergreen spreading to upright habit that lends itself to shearing and shaping. Item# 9479.

Bright cherry pink, medium-sized, trumpet-shaped, single to semi-double flowers with a boss of gold-tipped white stamens are held against a nicely contrasting foil of deep green and gold foliage. Flowering occurs in mid to late season, January to March, attracting bees and other pollinators on warmer days. Golden Spangles Camellia, a Camellia x williamsii hybrid, is a medium to large, evergreen shrub with a slow to moderate rate of growth and an upright to rounded habit growing to about 6-8'H x 3-4'W. This Camellia is truly a shrub for all seasons with its deep dark green, medium to fine-textured, glossy, Sasanqua-like foliage that is consistently heavily variegated with gold, yellow, and chartreuse along the central veins, a rarely seen trait among Camellias. Use this medium to large evergreen shrub as a specimen in the garden and landscape or as a container plant. Camellias prefer a moist to average moist, well-drained, loamy to sandy, acidic soil with a deep organic mulch. Item# 13476

The small to medium-sized, semi-double, rich rosy pink flowers are centered by a boss of contrasting golden stamens, and each petal may be lightly to moderately centered by white. The flowers are produced early in the season providing a burst of color for mid to late fall. Kanjiro Sasanqua Camellia, a selection of Camellia hiemalis, is a vigorous, upright growing, large evergreen shrub becoming rounded with age. It can be used as a screen, tall hedge, as a specimen plant, and can also be trained into a tree form. Sasanquas are considered much more adaptable to sun or shade as well as soil types, provided they have good drainage, moderate fertility, and an acidic pH. And like the large flowered Japonica Camellias, the Sasanquas will also benefit from a deep organic mulch. Item# 13001

Small to medium-sized, 3-4" wide, perfect or rose form, bright pink flowers are produced late in the season, March to April, which is unusual for a Sasanqua. Pink Princess Sasanqua Camellia is vigorous growing, large evergreen shrub with an initially upright habit and medium textured, deep green, glossy foliage. It should make a good choice for a hedge, screen, or specimen plant. The Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions. A profusion of 3" wide, medium pink, semi-double to rose form flowers often showing a boss of gold tipped stamens with occasional white accents on the petals are produced over an extended period early in the season or October to December. Showa-No-Sakae Sasanqua Camellia is a moderately vigorous, medium to large evergreen shrub with a moderately dense branching habit and medium texture, deep green glossy foliage. Like most of the Sasanquas, these are exceptional shrubs for the garden and landscape and can easily be maintained as formal hedges, as specimens, or informal groupings. The Sasanquas are much more tolerant of full sun and less than ideal soils than are the Large Flowered Japonicas. For optimum growth and vigor provide an acidic, fertile soil with average or better drainage and average moisture. An organic mulch is highly recommended for all Camellias. Item# 896

The small to medium-sized, double, ruby red to rose red flowers, occasionally with a lavender tinge, showing varying amounts of yellow stamens among the central petaloids, are produced early in the season, October to December. Sparkling Burgundy Sasanqua Camellia, a C. hiemalis hybrid with Shi-Shi Gashira lineage, has a vigorous, yet compact, well-branched habit growing to about 5-7' high and equally wide and is cloaked in medium-textured, dark green, glossy foliage. Use this medium-sized evergreen shrub as a fall flowering accent, hedge, or even a container plant in formal or informal settings. This was one of the earliest patented Camellias assigned USPP1539. The Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions. Item# 13229

Masses of 2-¹/₂ to 3" wide semi-double rose pink flowers seemingly cover up the plants in February-March and are centered by a boss of yellow stamens atop white filaments. Spring Awakening Camellia, a hybrid developed and introduced by Dr. Clifford Parks of Camellia Forest Nursery in 1990, is a moderately vigorous, large growing evergreen shrub with an upright, somewhat loose and open habit initially that will likely become denser and rounded with age as is typical of most Camellias.  Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and a deep organic mulch. Medium-sized, single, pink often described with a lavender tinge, flowers with a boss of sunny yellow stamens are produced in fall or early in the season, October to November, and are held against a foil of glossy, deep green, medium-textured foliage. Winter's Star Sasanqua Camellia, an Ackerman cross using C. oleifera for cold hardiness and is listed with the C. x hiemalis hybrids, is a vigorous growing, medium-sized, evergreen shrub with a fairly upright and rounded, densely branching habit. It has taken temperatures as low as -12^oF with no apparent damage and no protection except for that of pine trees overhead per Dr. Ackerman's description in the U.S. National Arboretum's pamphlet for these introductions. The Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions.
