Black Stockings Meadow-Rue, Thalictrum

Thalictrum 'Black Stockings'  

Dense clouds of pinkish-purplish airy flowers top the sturdy 4-1/2 to 6' high stems in mid to late spring attracting a variety of smaller pollinators all atop a neat lacy mound of Columbine-like bluish-green foliage. Black Stockings Meadow Rue, a Terra-Nova Nurseries hybrid Thalictrum introduction, is a hardy, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial that is sure to make a statement in the spring garden or landscape. *Meadow Rue are tolerant of full sun in areas with cool summers but may do best with midday and afternoon shade or filtered shade in hot summer climates. Blackhawks Big Bluestem, Turkey Foot Grass

One of the hottest new native grasses on the market! Blackhawks Big Bluestem starts off in spring as a deep green clump of upright to arching blades that may be tipped with red to purple. It is in late summer when the real show begins with the upright and arching foliage and flowering stems of August deepen to red to red-purple and further deepening and intensifying as the cooler fall weather arrives becoming nearly all black as its sturdy and showy flowering stems begin to mature. Blackhawks Big Bluestem is a slightly more compact plant reaching about 4-5' high when in flower. The species is native throughout much of the eastern 2/3's of the US and is a clumping to slowly spreading rhizomatous grass whose seeds are utilized by a number of seed eating birds. Provide a full to mostly sunny site with an average to well-drained, acidic soil for the deepest foliage colors and optimum vigor. Plants are in their best form when grown in a low fertility soil. Phantom Dwarf Joe-Pye Weed, Eupatorium

A slightly more compact Joe-Pye Weed-like hybrid, in summer Phantom Eupatorium produces large rounded clusters of purplish-pink flowers that sit atop sturdy dark maroon stems adorned with large medium green Joe-Pye Weed-like foliage. This clump forming herbaceous perennial was selected for its shorter branchier habit, excellent flower power, and mildew resistance but in all other regards is very similar to its larger growing parent. At maturity Phantom Eupatorium develops into a large rounded perennial to about 5'x5' whose stems are topped in 12" wide clusters of nectar rich flowers for weeks attracting a bevy of bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Pink Skyrocket Foam Flower, Tiarella

Tiarella 'Pink Skyrocket'  PP13382, EU13697

This wonderful low groundcover produces dense cone-shaped, upright flower spikes with red stems in mid to late spring, with some flowering later in the season, and are composed of tiny ball-shaped shrimp-pink buds that open to display the tiny white flowers. The flowers are held just above the palmate bluish-green to green foliage with each lobe displaying a black to burgundy main vein. In fall and under shade, the foliage becomes a deep shiny black and in sunnier sites it takes on deep bronze tones. Pink Skyrocket Foam Flower is an easy and rewarding low, stoloniferous (think Strawberry plants), semi-evergreen groundcover that is shade tolerant and will likely need shade in areas with hot summer climates. They will prefer a moist soil with ample organic matter and average or better drainage. The flowers are reported to be fragrant and are likely pollinated by smaller bees. Dr. Allen Armitage in his Herbaceous Perennial Plants, 4th Edition states that he "puts these plants on the A list for shady areas." Purple Smoke Baptisia, Wild Indigo

Baptisia x 'Purple Smoke'  

Dark sturdy spikes are covered by smokey purple pea-shaped flowers with a darker purple eye in mid to late spring. Purple Smoke Baptisia can produce over 100 of the sturdy 2-3' high flowering stems once mature. An accidental hybrid of our native Baptisia alba and B. australis and one of the oldest cultivars on the market, it received top marks in the 2012-15 Baptisia Trials at Mount Cuba Center of 46 different cultivars, seemingly garnering the compact habit from B. australis and the smokey colored stems of B. alba. Baptisias are naturally durable, pest and disease resistant, long-lived perennials and could be considered the Lupine of the South. The large arrowhead shaped, tropical foliage emerges a deep olive green and matures to a deep purple-black with nicely contrasting bluish-green, neon green to neon yellow veining. ROYAL HAWAIIAN® Aloha Elephant Ear is a vigorous, clump-forming, heat and sunloving, rhizomatous to tuberous rooted, naturally evergreen tropical plant growing to about 3-4' high and wide. It will act like a die-back perennial freezing back to the crown for winter and re-emerging in spring that is hardy into zone 7. Where not hardy the rhizomes can be lifted and stored for winter or the plants can be enjoyed as container plants and is vigorous enough to be utilized as an annual.
