Chocolate Eupatorium, White Snakeroot

Ageratina altissima 'Chocolate', Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate'

Dark maroon to near black stems foliage and stems make this native perennial a standout amongst its garden peers even without its starkly contrasting clusters of white late summer flowers. Chocolate Eupatorium, a cultivar of White Snakeroot and actually a species of Ageratina altissima (not Eupatorium altissimum), is a rhizomatously spreading herbaceous perennial with an upright bushy habit to about 3' high (or to 5' in rich moist soils) that is found throughout the central and eastern US. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for the deepest foliage color and optimum flowering. The flowers attracts bees, butterflies, other garden beneficials. Use Chocolate Eupatorium as a tall informal groundcover, utilize it in mixed perennial borders with other vigorous growing perennials, or as a container plant. Mojito Elephant Ears

The large minty green elephant-ear shaped foliage is flecked, spotted, streaked and randomly splashed with dark purple to black creating a very cool tropical eye-catching effect. The Mojito Elephant Ear is a rhizomatous tropical perennial in zones 8-10 but is vigorous enough to enjoy as a summer annual in northerly climates. Elephant Ears can be grown in moist to wet fertile soils and can be lightly submerged in water gardens as well as in medium to large containers. Colocasias can be invasive in warm southern climates please plant and dispose of plant parts responsibly. Fiery red-orange 1-1/2" wide flowers sit in clusters atop short stems for weeks in early to midsummer atop mounds of darkly contrasting deep purple and bronze tinged foliage. Orange Gnome Lychnis is a clump forming perennial to annual whose showy flowers are followed by decorative seed pods. Well-drained soils are key to its longevity but it also reseeds fairly reliably on exposed soils. Full to mostly sunny locations (zones 3-6) to midday shade (zones 7-9) in hot summer climates . In poor soils Lychnis generally tolerates dryer conditions and in rich soils average moisture is preferred. Use Orange Gnome Lychnis in containers as specimen plants and in combinations or harness its traffic stopping ability in cottage gardens, cutting gardens, and the landscape. A slightly more compact Joe-Pye Weed-like hybrid, in summer Phantom Eupatorium produces large rounded clusters of purplish-pink flowers that sit atop sturdy dark maroon stems adorned with large medium green Joe-Pye Weed-like foliage. This clump forming herbaceous perennial was selected for its shorter branchier habit, excellent flower power, and mildew resistance but in all other regards is very similar to its larger growing parent. At maturity Phantom Eupatorium develops into a large rounded perennial to about 5'x5' whose stems are topped in 12" wide clusters of nectar rich flowers for weeks attracting a bevy of bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
