In early to midspring the 18" high scapes are topped by loose clusters of frilly light lavender 1-2" wide yellow-eyed daisies that attract a variety of pollinators and other garden beneficials particularly native bees. Lynn Haven Carpet Fleabane, a selection of our native Erigeron pulchellus, is a tough, shade tolerant, evergreen, rosette forming, rhizomatous groundcover adorned in grayish green foliage that creates a dense near weed proof mat that slowly expands each growing season. It is generally at its best in sunny poor, sandy, rocky, or otherwise well-drained soils and needs little to no care once fully established. It is tough enough to grow right up next to asphalt along roadsides and seems perfectly oblivious to it as well as in dryish partly shaded conditons. In full sun areas it may look its best with supplemental water during dry periods. Erigeron pulchellus is native to basically all states east of the Missississippi River as well as western Louisiana, eastern Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, Inc., all rights reserved. Item# 13317

Hedychium 'Manipur Gold'

Large spikes of headily fragrant, golden yellow butterfly-shaped flowers are accented with a darker orange blotch and red-orange anthers and filaments all atop sturdy red tinged 4-5' high stems and glossy dark green foliage. Manipur Gold Ginger is considered to potentially be an as yet unnamed species from Manipur province of northeastern India and was originally introduced by Tim Chapman of Gingerwood Nursery in southern Louisiana. The fragrant showy flowers should attract larger butterflies and maybe even the hummingbird-like pollinating Sphinx moths. Provide gingers with a rich, moist, and well-drained soil for optimum growth and flowering in an area that receives at least some direct sunlight or ample filtered sunlight. The flowers of the large type Hedychium gingers can also be used for fresh cut flowers once the flowers of the spike have begun opening as long as the fragrance is not overpowering indoors. Mauvilla Gold Aromi Deciduous Azalea

Rhododendron 'Mauvilla Gold' (Aromi)

The large rounded clusters of tubular open to deep orange, fragrant flowers with a contrasting gold splotch that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in early spring atop the bare stems. Mauvilla Gold Aromi Deciduous Azalea develops into an upright to rounded, medium-sized deciduous shrub well suited to bright woodland settings but will also thrive in full sun under good conditions. The Aromi Deciduous Azaleas were developed by Dr. Eugene Aromi of Mobile, Alabama, and are known for both their amazing spring display of fragrant flowers as well as their ability to withstand the heat and humidity of the Southeastern US. Sometimes still fondly referred to as Wild Honeysuckle Bushes, these nativars will do best in an average moist, well-drained, fertile, acidic soil from partial shade to full sun conditions. A White Butterfly Ginger on steroids! The spike-like clusters produce 4" wide, fragrant, butterfly-shaped white flowers with a creamy heart in late summer and into fall atop large sturdy upright stems with large tropical-looking rich green foliage. The Maximum Giant White Butterfly Ginger, likely a tetraploid or hybrid of Hedychium coronarium, has some of the largest stems, flowers, and (up to 2" diameter) rhizomes of any Hedychium we have grown to date! A naturally evergreen, rhizomatous slowly multiplying tropical, it acts like a die-back perennial in areas where freezes occur, reliably returning in zones 7B to 10. The Hedychium Gingers typically grow and flower best where they receive at least some direct sunlight for 3-4 hours during the day and generally have the best looking foliage where they receive shade during the heat of the day. A planting on the east facing side of a house, tree or other structure where they receive morning sun is often optimum. Provide an average moist to moist, average to well-drained, moderately fertile soil to keep this easy and reliable heirloom growing and flowering. Item# 13184

Mellow Yellows Coneflower, Echinacea

Echinacea 'Mellow Yellows'

These Coneflowers are produced with a range of ray colors from creamy yellow, through banana yellow, and into mango and pumpkin. Mellow Yellows Coneflower, a seed grown selection of Echinacea purpurea developed by Jelitto® Seed that has taken 20 years to develop, was selected for its better and more consistent branching habit, larger deeper colored flowers and scapes, and improved disease resistance. Coneflowers are clump forming perennials whose often fragrant flowers are adored by butterflies, bees, and other pollinators that can be enjoyed as part of the sunny garden garden and landscape as well as container specimens. Leave seedheads for fall and winter songbirds to enjoy. Periodic deadheading will keep the plants looking clean and may help promote continuous flowering. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, well-drained, fertile, preferably mineral soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Photos courtesy of Jelitto® Seed, all rights reserved. Merrit's Supreme Bigleaf Hydrangea, French Mophead Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Merrits Supreme'

Large rounded clusters in shades of deep pink to near red (alkaline or no Aluminum), dark purple (neutral to acid), to near indigo(very acid) depending on soil acidity and the availability of Aluminum. Merrit's Supreme Bigleaf Hydrangea begins flowering early and the long lasting flower clusters mature into purple, red, and green shades. This is a compact growing Hydrangea with strong sturdy stems originally developed as a florist's Hydrangea but it has proven to be a reliably hardy, small to medium-sized deciduous shrub for the garden and landscape. Merrit's Supreme also makes an easy and low-maintenance container specimen and can be overwintered indoors outside of its hardiness range. The large glossy deep green foliage is disease resistant. Provide a moist, well-drained, fertile soil in an area that receives morning sun and shade during the hottest portion of the day for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12347

Midnight Oil Eastern Beebalm

Monarda bradburiana 'Midnight Oil'  PPAF

The deep maroon foliage provides a contrasting foil for the ball-like clusters of 2" long, tubular light pink flowers whose nectar and pollen attract a variety of pollinators like hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and long-tongued bees. Midnight Oil Eastern Beebalm, a selection of Monarda bradburiana, is a many stemmed, clump-forming to slowly spreading, upright growing, native, herbaceous perennial selected for its unique, dark and mysterious foliage. This species is noted for its earlier flowering, excellent disease resistance, a naturally shorter 18-24" high habit, drought resistance as compared to other species of Monarda, and tolerance for thinner, poorer, and/or gravelly soils. Plants may lose foliage when drought stressed so average moisture is generally preferred under garden conditions. The large lemony yellow, lightly fragrant, cupped flowers can reach up to 5" across and open from long showy pointed buds that are often tinged red with flowers opening in the evening and closing up the following morning. The flowers are held against a contrasting foil of dark green to gray green, narrow, glossy foliage and the plants are pollinated by Sphinx moths that are sometimes confused with hummingbirds. The Missouri Evening Primrose, Oenothera macrocarpa or O. missouriensis, is one of the most recognizable US native perennial wildflowers and has long been a desirable garden perennial for its showy flowers, toughness, and long season of flowering that can begin as early as midspring and may continue into mid and late summer. It is a clump-forming, taprooted perennial native to the west central US in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, southern Arkansas, and of course Missouri that is typically found in very well-drained, gravelly to sandy to loamy, typically alkaline, often dry soils. For the gardener in other parts of the country it will need excellent drainage in a relatively dry soil in a full to mostly sunny site to do well and it does not like to be crowded. The flowers are followed by large winged seedpods that are sometimes dried and used in cut flower arrangements and the plants may reseed on exposed soils. Item# 12803
