Sassafras

Sassafras albidum, Laurus albidus

A beautiful native tree, the Sassafras produces reliable orange, red, yellow, and even pink fall color even in southern regions of the US. Yellow to greenish-yellow, lightly fragrant spring flowers are born in clusters at the tips of the bare green stems as they herald the arrival of spring. Female trees may produce clusters of large, shiny dark blue to blue-black "cherries" that sit atop bright red pedicels that birds and other wildlife will adore. The foliage, besides being edible by humans, is used by the Spicebush, Palamedes, and Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterflies as a host plant. The Sassafras tree is generally fast growing and pyramidal when young and normally develops into a small to medium sized tree although rather large specimens are known to exist. Sassafras was selected as the Georgia Native Plant Society's 2013 Plant of the Year! Item# 9824.

Scarlet red, 1/2-3/4" long, tart, cherry-like fruit are produced in abundance during late spring on a vigorous, pest and disease resistant deciduous fountaining shrub. The Goumi Berry is exceptionally high in vitamin C and can be enjoyed fresh or made into a jelly that is, in our opinion, as good or better than Mayhaw jelly. It can also be made into pie filling. This selection was shared with us many years ago by plantsman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana and our plants have been productive for over 30 years with practically no maintenance. One of the few plants with a symbiotic nitrogen fixating bacteria relationship that is not a Legume. Easy and reliable. Item# 444
