Euphorbia tithymaloides 'Splish Splash', Pedilanthus tithymaloides 'Splish Splash'

The beautifully mottled, splashed, and flecked yellowish, chartreuse, and deeper green variegated succulent ovate foliage adorns the zig-zagging stems of this upright growing succulent and summer may bring a ring-like cluster of 1" long deep red, bird-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds and give the plant its common name. The Splish Splash or Mottled Red Bird Cactus is an easy to grow highly decorative form of this heirloom and Florida native plant that has an easy and forgiving disposition creating fantastic, architecturally pleasing specimens. A shrub-like native of tropical forests of southern Florida and as far south as Central America, it makes an easy porch or patio plant where it partial shade to bright shade but can also be enjoyed as an easy indoor plant.  Allow the soil to become somewhat dry between waterings although it can tolerant more moisture when in active growth and less during winter. Item# 12608

Starfish Cactus, Zulu Giant, Carrion Flower

Stapelia gigantea, S. nobilis, Orbea variegata

The 4-angled, slightly fuzzy, mainly upright, deep olive green succulent stems produce 10" wide star-fish shaped, light creamy yellow flowers that are heavily overlaid with burgundy. The flowers are meant to attract Bot Flies for pollination with a fragrance of rotting meat and so the aroma is 'unforgettable'. The Starfish Cactus, Stapelia gigantea, is an easily grown, low-maintenance, densely branching cactus-like succulent that quickly develops into a mass of upright to trailing stems growing to about 8" high. During the warmer months of the year, once nighttime temperatures remain above about 55oF and daytime temperatures are above 75oF the Starfish Cactus can be enjoyed outdoors. It also makes an easy indoor plant for a windowsill provided it receives some direct sunlight to high indirect sunlight at a minimum. Provide a sharply draining cactus like soil mix and never allow plants to remain soggy wet. Item# 658

String of Dolphins, Dolphin Plant, Flying Dolphins

Curio x peregrinus, Senecio x peregrinus, C. peregrinus

Unusual bluish-green to gray-green foliage is shaped like dolphins leaping from the water and are attached to thin succulent trailing stems that can reach over 36 inches in length. The String of Dolphins or Dolphin Plant is considered to be a hybrid of the String of Pearls, Senecio rowleyanus, and the Candle Plant, Senecio articulatus. Like its parents, it prefers a soil with excellent drainage and cool sunlight to high indirect light making this an easy choice for a covered porch, patio, or windowsill. May produce white discoid flowers in fall that are very similar to those of the String of Pearls. Allow the soil to become moderately dry between waterings although it can tolerate slightly more moisture when in active growth. An unusual and popular trailing succulent, the String of Pearls produces strings of perfectly round, pearl-sized, green to grayish green leaves that can reach 18-36" in length. This easy to grow succulent makes a beautiful small hanging basket or allow it to trail and spill from containers where it is sure to be a conversation piece. Not only is the foliage of this plant unique in form, each round leaf has a small slightly darker green narrow slit-like "epidermal window" that allows more light to enter the internal part of the leaf to help make up for the leave's overall reduced surface area, due to being round instead of flat, for photosynthesis. Provide a well-drained, cactus-like soil and allow the soil to become slightly dry between waterings. Prefers high light conditions but no direct sunlight. Spade and lance shaped foliage with white variegation along its veins against a backdrop of bluish to gray-green foliage that is tinged with pink and purple under high light conditions. The leaves adorn fine lax trailing stems that can reach over 3' in length. An interesting cultivar or hybrid of the String of Hearts, Ceropegia collaricorona subsp. collaricorona previouslyCeropegia linearis woodii, that is considered to be just as easy and vigorous as its 'parent'. These plants make beautiful, low maintenance hanging basket and container specimens that are sure to be a conversation piece. The String of Spades also produces the whitish, parachute-like, almost alien looking flowers whose purple-brown petals are fused together at their tips. The ovate, pointed, succulent, blue-green to gray-green foliage is adorned with fine streak-like veins reminiscent of a watermelon rind and may also be coated in a white bloom. Like the String of Pearls, this easy to grow succulent has a clear, slit-like "epidermal window" that allows light to enter the internal part of the leaf. The String of Watermelons, Senecio herreanus, is a tropical, trailing succulent whose thin trailing stems can reach 12 or more inches long. During the warmer months of the year it produces small, ray-less white flowers enjoyed by bees and other small pollinators. Provide a sharply draining, cactus-like soil allowing it to become moderately dry between waterings although they can tolerate slightly more water during the growing season. The String of Watermelons makes an easy windowsill plant, hanging basket specimen, and table top decoration or use it in one of the head pots for an interesting specimen plant. Beautiful white edged to pink tinged, succulent variegated ovate foliage adorns the upright, zig-zagging stems on an upright growing succulent. The beautifully variegated foliage of this Red Bird Cactus, actually a Euphorbia or Pedilanthus and not a true cacti, makes this plant worth growing although the plant gets it's name from the clusters of tiny red bird-shaped that may be produced in summer.
