2019 New Plants

We are already beginning to add to our newest plants for the 2019 growing season. Expect more new Camellias, Tropical Plants, Hardy Perennials, Native Perennials, Shrubs, Vines and of course new pollinator plants to feed pollinators like butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and hummingbird moths. April Remembered Camellia

Camellia japonica 'April Remembered'

The petals of these large double flowers are a deep pink fading to light pink and surround a boss of yellow tipped stamens. April Remembered Camellia is an exceptionally long flowering hybrid which can begin flowering in fall with flowers produced into spring (late-season). This is a medium sized evergreen shrub useful as a hedge or a lower specimen to set in front of its larger growing cousins or on its own as a specimen plant in the garden and landscape. The large periwinkle star-shaped flowers open from balloon shaped buds look as though one flower was neatly tucked inside the other. The Astra Double Blue Balloon flower is a clump forming taprooted perennial that produces more and more flowering stems as the plant ages. They begin to flower in about mid summer and continue nearly until fall. Astra Double Blue is a more compact 2' x 2' growing variety that can reach about 30" high and also produces purple and yellow fall color. Betty Myles Young Passionflower, Passionvine

Passiflora x 'Betty Myles Young'

Large dark, true purple petals and slightly lighter, blue and purple tinged sepals are topped by a corona that has a deep blue outer halo, pure white narrow central halo that quickly fades to dark eggplant purple to near black at its heart. Betty Myles Young is a triploid hybrid (read larger flowers and vigorous) that is a magnificent flower producing machine beginning its display in late spring and early summer and continuing well into fall! This Myles Irvine hybrid that is named after his mother has proven to be an excellent garden addition with good hardiness or it can certainly be enjoyed as a container plant. Betty Sheffield Silver Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Betty Sheffield Silver'

A wonderful sport of Betty Sheffield Blush, the light pink billowy petals are edged in a band of white with slightly darker pink veining with a silvery overcast to the entire flower. Golden stamens provide nice contrast for the medium to large flowers. Betty Sheffield Silver Camellia was discovered in nearby Beaumont, Texas by G.C. Comstock about 1957. This is a compact growing midseason flowering Japonica Camellia with a dense well-branched habit lending it to use as a container plant but it is sure to be a conversation piece in the garden and landscape. Black Truffle Cardinal Flower, Lobelia

Lobelia cardinalis 'Black Truffle'

Noted for its dark chocolate to maroon colored foliage, in summer Black Truffle Lobelia produces tall dark spikes of deep true red tubular flowers that are truly a hummingbird's delight. Combine this beauty with chartreuse elephant ears or other light colored moisture loving plants for a wonderful contrast. Black Truffle Cardinal Flower is a hybrid selection with Lobelia cardinalis parentage which by some accounts is considered to be the most beautiful of North America's red flowered species. The 2-3" wide dark eyed daisies are composed of deep golden yellow rays that surround the dark brown to black cones are produced in late spring to summer (depending on your zone). The flowers attract bees and other small pollinators and the seed heads attract songbirds. The Black-Eyed Susan is an annual - atleast in our area, biennial, to short-lived perennial with dark green hairy foliage that adorns well-branched plants and each plant can produce 20-30 or more flowers. This is a widespread species found along roadsides, meadows and prairies, savannas, and in open Longleaf Pine forests mainly in soils with average or better drainage. The Black-Eyed Susan is a common addition to seedmixes and readily reseeds on exposed soils, although it is not an aggressive species. Item# 11725

Eryngium planum 'Blue Glitter'

Large branched clusters of long lasting deep silvery blue flowers sit atop the basal rosette of foliage beginning in early summer. The prickly flowers of Blue Glitter Sea Holly or Eryngium attract a myriad of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and other garden beneficials. Sea Holly also makes a long-lasting addition to cut flower arrangements. Provide a well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny site for optimum flowering and plant vigor. Spikes of deep blue to near purple pea-shaped flowers are produced in spring atop the gray-green foliage in mid to late spring. Blue Wild Indigo is a long-lived easy to grow native that develops and extensive taproot and so it prefers not to be moved once it begins to get established. Baptisias are durable pest and disease resistant perennials that should be considered the Lupine of the South. Provide a sunny position for optimum flowering. Dense broadly conical 3-4" high spikes of intense sapphire blue tubular flowers open from the bottom upwards with the first flowers to open creating the broad brim of the witches hat. Blue Witches Hat, or Hedgehog Sage, begins flowering in autumn and in areas where it is protected from frosts it can flower throughout winter and into spring. It is a medium to short day flowering plant. Blushing Ballerina Dwarf Angel's Trumpet

Brugmansia x 'Blushing Ballerina' (Rubella type with B. sanguinea parentage)

Soft pastel pink with hints of purple 6-8" long trumpets are produced seemingly throughout the year on this smaller growing hybrid Angel's Trumpet with trumpets angled down and sideways versus just the typical straight downward hanging trumpets of most Brugmansia cultivars. Blushing Bride Brugmansia is a compact and smaller growing plant with probably the longest flowering season of any that we currently grow. The smaller habit lends it to use as a magnificent container specimen. Due to its Brugmansia sanguinea parentage we are not yet certain of its cold hardiness in the ground but some suggest zone 8. Chiapas Sage, Meadow Sage

Salvia chiapensis

Graceful foot-long spikes of fuzzy bright fuchsia tubular flowers are produced from summer through fall and throughout winter under frost free conditions on a mannerly shade tolerant plant with deep green textured foliage. Chiapas Sage develops into a 3' high and wide plant and hails from the Cloud Forests of San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico and should do wonderfully in the humid central and eastern US. It is frost tender but is reported to withstand zone 7 winters if given a breathable protective winter mulch in a well-drained soil. In hot summer climates plan to give Chiapas Sage midday and afternoon shade and it can tolerate light shade and will be sure to brighten up these areas. The nectar rich flowers are a treat for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Easy to overwinter as a container plant and floriferous enough to be enjoyed as an annual. Item# 11691

Colorful Crepes Flapjacks, Paddle Plant, Desert Cabbage, White Lady

Kalanchoe tetraphylla 'Colorful Crepes', K. thyrsiflora

The large thick flattened leaves are centered with alternating stripes of soft primrose yellow and lime and edged in purplish-red. Where Colorful Crepes Flapjacks receives at least some direct sunlight the contrasting colors deepen and intensify. Use this colorful and easy to grow succulent in containers, sandy and xeric soils, and in the ground where winters are mild. Needs a well-drained soil for the best results.
