2019 New Plants

We are already beginning to add to our newest plants for the 2019 growing season. Expect more new Camellias, Tropical Plants, Hardy Perennials, Native Perennials, Shrubs, Vines and of course new pollinator plants to feed pollinators like butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and hummingbird moths. Amante Salvia, Sage

Salvia x 'Amante' PPAF PBRAF

Large 2" long bright fuchsia colored tubular flowers emerge from darkly contrasting black calyxes which adorn the black flower spikes of this exciting new cousin of the deservingly popular Amistad Salvia. Amante Salvia or Sage is considered to be a "genetic breakthrough" in the color of the Salvia guaranitica group and this exciting new color offers a bright and bold addition to the pollinator garden, the landscape, and for medium to large containers as a specimen or in combination with filler and spillers. Applecourt Scarlet Ginger (Red-Orange)

Hedychium coccineum 'Applecourt'

Bright red-orange flowers with a red throat emerge from tall spikes that sit atop tall stems with tropical looking bluish-gray green foliage and begins flowering in summer with an additional show in fall. Applecourt Scarlet Ginger is a vigorous grower and easily reaches 6' high. As with most Hedychiums provide a partly shaded area to full sun, in an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Applecourt Scarlet Ginger is vigorous, easy and hardy selection that was introduced to the US by Plant Delights Nursery who purchased it from Applecourt Nursery in the UK. Item# 11525

April Remembered Camellia

Camellia japonica 'April Remembered'

The petals of these large double flowers are a deep pink fading to light pink and surround a boss of yellow tipped stamens. April Remembered Camellia is an exceptionally long flowering hybrid which can begin flowering in fall with flowers produced into spring (late-season). This is a medium sized evergreen shrub useful as a hedge or a lower specimen to set in front of its larger growing cousins or on its own as a specimen plant in the garden and landscape. April Remembered is a member of the Ice Angels series developed by Dr. Clifford Parks for improved cold hardiness into zone 6. Item# 11786

Betty Myles Young Passionflower, Passionvine

Passiflora x 'Betty Myles Young'

Large dark, true purple petals and slightly lighter, blue and purple tinged sepals are topped by a corona that has a deep blue outer halo, pure white narrow central halo that quickly fades to dark eggplant purple to near black at its heart. Betty Myles Young is a triploid hybrid (read larger flowers and vigorous) that is a magnificent flower producing machine beginning its display in late spring and early summer and continuing well into fall! This Myles Irvine hybrid that is named after his mother has proven to be an excellent garden addition with good hardiness or it can certainly be enjoyed as a container plant. Betty Sheffield Silver Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Betty Sheffield Silver'

A wonderful sport of Betty Sheffield Blush, the light pink billowy petals are edged in a band of white with slightly darker pink veining with a silvery overcast to the entire flower. Golden stamens provide nice contrast for the medium to large flowers. Betty Sheffield Silver Camellia was discovered in nearby Beaumont, Texas by G.C. Comstock about 1957. This is a compact growing midseason flowering Japonica Camellia with a dense well-branched habit lending it to use as a container plant but it is sure to be a conversation piece in the garden and landscape. The variegated, tropical looking, medium sized foliage of this Peacock Ginger sports a strongly contrasting reddish-purple reverse. The lance shaped arching to upright foliage has a contrasting deep green feathery shape along the midrib that extends to about 2/3 of the length of the leaf blade where it changes to a silvery green. Bhui Champa, in its native range, makes an easy clump forming perennial for shaded gardens and containers. Use it as a Hosta replacement in hot summer climates. Black Truffle Cardinal Flower, Lobelia

Noted for its dark chocolate to maroon colored foliage, in summer Black Truffle Lobelia produces tall dark spikes of deep true red tubular flowers that are truly a hummingbird's delight. Combine this beauty with chartreuse elephant ears or other light colored moisture loving plants for a wonderful contrast. Black Truffle Cardinal Flower is a hybrid selection with Lobelia cardinalis parentage which by some accounts is considered to be the most beautiful of North America's red flowered species. The 2-3" wide dark eyed daisies are composed of deep golden yellow rays that surround the dark brown to black cones are produced in late spring to summer (depending on your zone). The flowers attract bees and other small pollinators and the seed heads attract songbirds. The Black-Eyed Susan is an annual - atleast in our area, biennial, to short-lived perennial with dark green hairy foliage that adorns well-branched plants and each plant can produce 20-30 or more flowers. This is a widespread species found along roadsides, meadows and prairies, savannas, and in open Longleaf Pine forests mainly in soils with average or better drainage. The Black-Eyed Susan is a common addition to seedmixes and readily reseeds on exposed soils, although it is not an aggressive species. Item# 11725

Pale blue frilly 1 to 1-1/2" wide daisies with a nicely contrasting yellow center are produced beginning in late spring and through summer often continuing into fall atop a neat mound of deep green foliage. The Blue Star Japanese Aster is a tidy under-used clump-forming perennial selected for its exceptionally long flowering season that is sure to add delightful color to the garden and landscape but it also makes easy and exceptionally long-flower container specimens. The flowers are sure to attract a multitude of pollinators. Provide a full to mostly sunny site with a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Baptisias are durable pest and disease resistant perennials that should be considered the Lupine of the South. Provide a sunny position for optimum flowering. Dense broadly conical 3-4" high spikes of intense sapphire blue tubular flowers open from the bottom upwards with the first flowers to open creating the broad brim of the witches hat. Blue Witches Hat, or Hedgehog Sage, begins flowering in autumn and in areas where it is protected from frosts it can flower throughout winter and into spring. It is a medium to short day flowering plant. Blushing Ballerina Dwarf Angel's Trumpet

Brugmansia x 'Blushing Ballerina' (Rubella type with B. sanguinea parentage)

Soft pastel pink with hints of purple 6-8" long trumpets are produced seemingly throughout the year on this smaller growing hybrid Angel's Trumpet with trumpets angled down and sideways versus just the typical straight downward hanging trumpets of most Brugmansia cultivars. Blushing Bride Brugmansia is a compact and smaller growing plant with probably the longest flowering season of any that we currently grow. The smaller habit lends it to use as a magnificent container specimen. Due to its Brugmansia sanguinea parentage we are not yet certain of its cold hardiness in the ground but some suggest zone 8. Provide a moderately fertile, well-drained average moist soil and midday shade for optimum vigor and flowering. Blushing Ballerina is sweetly night fragrant. Item# 11667

In midspring tall blue-gray flowers stalks are adorned with 2-4 grape juice purple buds open to 6" wide flowers with dark purple falls and slightly lighter medium purple standards with a yellow-orange 'beard' or nectar guide. Bobbie's Old Fashioned Purple Bearded Iris is an heirloom pass-a-along that appropriately has found its way to us from both sides of our family and we came to know it as "Bobbie's Purple" since Aunt Bobbie shared it with us. The steely blue-gray fans of foliage act as a wonderful foil for the dark colored flowers and the plants will eventually develop into a groundcover like group of plants. The Chelsea Common Hoya has somewhat uniquely and distinctively cupped deep green waxy heart-shaped thick succulent foliage with raised veins that adorn purplish-red vines. This is a vigorous and beautiful form of the Common Hoya, Hoya carnosa, and produces rounded hanging clusters composed of pink star-shaped waxy flower with a darker eye. Hoyas make easy to grow and forgiving heirloom plants that do best in well-drained soils in lightly shaded areas like a patio, porch, or as an indoor plant. Chiapas Sage, Meadow Sage

Salvia chiapensis

Graceful foot-long spikes of fuzzy bright fuchsia tubular flowers are produced from summer through fall and throughout winter under frost free conditions on a mannerly shade tolerant plant with deep green textured foliage. Chiapas Sage develops into a 3' high and wide plant and hails from the Cloud Forests of San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico and should do wonderfully in the humid central and eastern US. It is frost tender but is reported to withstand zone 7 winters if given a breathable protective winter mulch in a well-drained soil. In hot summer climates plan to give Chiapas Sage midday and afternoon shade and it can tolerate light shade and will be sure to brighten up these areas. The nectar rich flowers are a treat for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Common Evening Primrose

Oenothera biennis

Small clusters of large 4-petaled sunny yellow flowers are lightly fragrant and open in the evening to attract pollinating moths and may last until about noon the following day when they attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Ripe seeds are utilized by songbirds. Common Evening Primrose is a tall growing tap-rooted native biennial species found throughout most of the lower 48 states and into Canada. It is common in disturbed areas, meadows and prairies. The first year it produces a rosette of foliage and the second year it shoots up to 3-6' high and begins flowering in summer and may continue into fall under good conditions. The Common Evening Primrose will readily reseed on exposed soils. It is a good addition to naturilized areas or add it to the Moon Moth Garden. Item# 11761

Cornelia Hybrid Musk Rose

Rosa x 'Cornelia'

Dark near red and orange colored perfectly formed buds open to nicely fragrant apricot colored flowers that mature to a nice medium to coral pink and that are almost full enough to resemble a cabbage rose. Flowering is heaviest in spring and fall and well-established plants will produce additional flowers in between times. Cornelia is an heirloom Hybrid Musk Rose with good disease resistance and it is nearly thornless making it a good choice for arbors and near garden paths. It can be grown as a large fountaining shrub or as a medium-sized climber with canes can that reach 10'. Provide a full to mostly sunny location, although Cornelia is considered to be moderately shade tolerant, in an average moist moderately fertile soil with average or better drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. Known for its intense Honeysuckle-like fragrance that is most pronounced in the evening, Daniel Weeks Ginger produces large dense spikes of of large butterfly-like flowers that are a light creamy orange at the edges deepening to dark golden-orange in the center.  This is a vigorous clump forming ginger with sturdy upright stems adorned with tropical foliage that starts flowering in late spring to early summer and can continue until fall. Its compact clump forming upright habit and excellent flower power lend this hybrid Hedychium to use in containers as well as in the garden and landscape.
