Plum Crazy Salvia, Anise Sage

A star in 2023 trials and was reported especially popular with polllinators! The large, 2" long, tubular, deep red-purple flowers emerge from even darker burgundy spikes and calyxes from spring to fall attracting a host of pollinators including hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and larger bees. Plum Crazy Salvia, a hybrid with Salvia guaranitica and S. splendens in its parentage, is a clump forming, herbaceous perennial growing to about 3-4' high and wide and is adorned with deep green foliage. Use these types of Salvias in the garden and landscape for dazzling summer color or in medium to large mixed or specimen containers to draw the pollinators in close. Provide Plum Crazy Salvia with a full sun to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and continuous flowering. It received high marks in 2023 trials at both the UGA Trial Gardens with a 4.8 out of 5 and a 4.58 out of 5 in Penn State Flower Trials. An earlier flowering and cold hardy selection of the Forsythia Sage developed by Plant Delights, Red Neck Girl boasts dark maroon red stems that contrast nicely with the 12-18" spikes of yellow tubular flowers in late summer and fall. From dark colored spikes and calyxes emerge vivid hot fuchsia colored two-lipped tubular flowers that are produced throughout the growing season on a mound forming, heat and sunloving perennial. San Carlos Festival Littleleaf Sage, a Yucca Do selection of Salvia microphylla from the mountains of Tamaulipas, Mexico, has proven to be a top garden performer with excellent season long flower power and reliable cold hardiness. The brightly colored, nectar rich flowers are sure to draw hummingbirds as well as bees and the occassional butterfly. Provide this tough perennial Salvia with a well-drained, fertile soil with average moisture, although, fully established plants are somewhat drought resistant the plants will flower best where they have at least some moisture available during the growing season. Salvia 'Van Remsen' (S. guaranitica hybrid)  

Large intense deep blue flowers emerge from tall spikes beginning in spring and continuing throughout the growing season and into fall. Van Remsen Salvia, an Anise Sage or chance hybrid, is an excellent nectar plant for hummingbirds and may also be visited by larger butterflies. Unlike many of the Salvia guaranitica selections available Van Remsen is a clump forming vigorous growing perennial that can hit 7' high bringing the flowers closer to the hummingbirds and towering over most other garden perennials. This cultivar was discovered in the garden of James Van Remsen of Louisiana and was named and introduced by Salvia guru Richard Dufresne of North Carolina.
