Blackberry Lily, Leopard Flower

Iris domestica, Belamcanda chinensis

The 6-petaled starry flowers in shades of yellow, orange, and red are heavily speckled and flecked with red and are produced on sturdy stems atop the fans of medium to light green iris-like foliage in summer over a period of several weeks. The flowers of the Blackberry Lily, Belamcanda chinensis or more recently Iris domestica, are followed by seed pods that split open to reveal shiny black round seeds that are sometimes used in dried arrangements for fall. This is a hardy clump forming heirloom perennial with a tough constitution as well as being a colorful and low-maintenance addition to the garden and landscape. The very large, to 5" wide, blue-violet flowers speckled with dark purple are perched on sturdy, 5' high, bud-laden stalks opening over a period of 4-6 weeks beginning in early spring. Ming Treasure Amplifora Iris, a Plant Delights Nursery introduction discovered by the Shanghai Botanic Gardens Dr. Xiao, is a vigorous evergreen clump forming perennial developing into a 3'H x 6'W mound of rich green, sword like foliage that can be up to 4" wide at its base. *Note: Most Irises prefer a full to mostly sunny site but Ming Treasure seems to do best where it receives at least some shade, particularly during the hottest portion of the day, with light, bright, or filtered shade being considered optimum. The white, upward facing flowers each have a nice drop of starkly contrasting golden orange sitting at the base of each of the large outer petals. Orange Drop African Iris, a hybrid between the African Iris and Butterfly Iris, is a slowly multiplying and clump forming, naturally evergreen, tropical member of the Iris family with very dark green, upright to slightly arching, narrow foliage growing to about 24-30" high. The African Irises can typically withstand light freezes and will still remain evergreen, while they can reportedly survive temperatures into the lower 20oFs they may be more apt to grow and thus flower best when protected from temperatures below about 25oF, at which point the foliage tends to burn.
