Gardenias

Huge 4-5" double blooms are intensely fragrant! Aimee Yoshioka is the largest flowered of all Gardenias with large, glossy, dark green foliage on a vigorous and moderately fast growing evergreen shrub. The large dark foliage provides a wonderful foil for the large white flowers. Easily trained into a tree standard. Aimee is also considered to be one of the largest growing Gardenias, particularly in mild winter climates where it is known to reach 10-12' high but 5-6' may be more typical. Item# 1154.

3" double white, wonderfully fragrant flowers are produced over an extended period beginning in about midspring and continuing into midsummer on mature plants and they attract the hummingbird-like Sphinx moths as a pollinator. August Beauty Gardenia is a naturally evergreen, medium-sized shrub, growing to about 4-6'H x 4-6'W that makes an easy specimen plant or informal hedge for the garden or landscape. Provide Gardenias with a full sun to partially shaded site in a well-draining, average moist, fertile soil for optimum vigor and flowering. In the hottest summer climates of its range the Gardenia often benefits from midday to afternoon shade. The intensely fragrant, up to 4" wide, double white flowers may produced throughout much of the year under warm tropical conditions and are held against a foil of large glossy dark green foliage. Belmont Gardenia is almost old enough to be an heirloom variety being patented in 1934 by Walter E. Lenk on Belmont Estate, Massachussets. In his patent application, PP93, he states that "The variety is an extraordinarily heavy producer and can be propagated rapidly. If not pinched back this variety blooms almost continuously and readily adapts itself to maximum production of blossoms in the Winter when they are so valuable." Obviously, Mr. Lenk developed it for greenhouse production but it has proven to be a highly desirable Gardenia clone that is still popular today and has proven to be hardy into zone 7. It is fairly similar to Aimee Yoshioka and Miami Supreme in vigor and flower size. In the garden and landscape, expect flowering to be heaviest in spring and summer with some repeat flowering into fall on mature plants. Item# 12299

Masses of 2" wide upward facing intensely fragrant flowers are composed of two neat rows of white petals that surround the golden anthers are produced in late spring or early summer. Buttons Gardenia develops into a densely branched small rounded evergreen shrub growing to about 1-1/2' high and wide. You can use this "cute as a button" Gardenia in a sunny garden or landscape but it is also small enough to be grown as a container plant. Sweetly fragrant, 2" wide, white star-like single flowers, pinwheel-style, are borne in large clusters atop the dark green compact foliage and stems. A dwarf to semi-dwarf Gardenia, Daisy has a naturally vase shaped to rounded habit. Fragrant Pathways Gardenia is an exceptionally low growing and spreading form of the Dwarf Gardenia that produces fragrant, double white blossoms in late spring and early summer. An exceptionally cold hardy Gardenia, Frostproof puts on a show of wonderfully fragrant, 2" wide, white flowers in late spring with some flowers throughout summer on well-established plants. Act I begins in mid to late spring with the plants nearly covering up in fragrant, 2" wide, starry single flowers and is followed by periodic flowering in summer with a fall finale similar to the spring show. Martha Turnbull Gardenia is a wonderfully free-flowering Gardenia that was selected by Greg Grant from seed collected from Rosedown Plantation and named in honor of the garden's owner and horticulturist Martha Turnbull. Cross-pollinated flowers will produce bright orange hips to provide winter interest. The fragrant 2" wide starry single white flowers of Kleim's Hardy Gardenia are born in mid to late spring and early summer. This is an exceptionally cold hardy Gardenia that develops into a compact evergreen, rounded shrub to 2-3' high and wide that is well suited to container culture as well as in the ground. The Gardenia of the Old South, this variety is still popular with its 3-4'' wide, full double, highly fragrant flowers and the large, dark glossy green tropical looking foliage. Mystery is still one of the most popular and is one of the largest flowering of the more cold tolerant Gardenias. 2" wide, sweetly fragrant, double white flowers are produced mainly in spring with occasional repeat and are held against a foil of deep green foliage edged in creamy yellow to creamy white. The Variegated Radicans Dwarf Gardenia is a low, mound forming, evergreen shrub slowly building to 1-2' high and about 2' wide making it an easy and low maintenance addition to the garden or landscape. *The plants can tolerate full sun but typically have the deepest green foliage where it receives some shade during the hottest portion of the day particularly in hot summer climates. Provide an acid, fertile, average moist soil with good drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. Rarely available in the nursery trade.
